Good morning from frozen Rhode Island!

We are safe and have power. The state remains shut down, and the blizzard continues. The snow is fluffier than expected, so we are hopeful that we will not lose power.

I went btb this morning, planning to get up at +2 or 3 to test. Once I finally get back to sleep, that plan went down the tubes! Apparently Mikey was busy clearing his bounce. It will be very interesting to see what happens from here. I hope he can lose the rubber ball act soon.

Prayers for those who are not faring as well as we are in the storm. Be careful when you dig out.

This is really late in the cycle for him to drop. Should I let him go or feed some LC? I'd kind of like to see what happens, since I'm usually not home at this time, but I want him to be safe. AND NOT BOUNCE!!!!!! Like I'm going to get that! :D:D:D

What a great day for Mikey! Surf it buddy. :D:D

I would do what you normally do when you aren't at home. Whether it's simulating an autofeeder or having a plate of food around. It's a great chance to see what he's up to while you are gone during the day.

He's out cold in his favorite box. He's not asking for food at all. I'm going to test again at +9. I didn't feed him at this point, because he normally wouldn't have food at this time. I'm curious to see when his nadir will be. I'm not too thrilled about the Borg Queen appearing tonight, so hopefully he'll have a nadir!

Hey, Mikey, be careful - you're giving away your secrets! We can't let the beans know everything we do when they aren't home! - Cinco

Glad to hear you're safe and the storm isn't as bad as feared. Sending keep power vines! Surf safe, Mikey!

+9 is 63! Is it safe to keep not feeding or is he getting too low for that? I really want to know what he's doing when I'm not home, but I want him safe, and I want to keep this dose.

Remember there can be a 20% meter variance, he could be surfing. He's still in a safe range, but getting closer to the point past which you don't want to feed him (+10) and have it impact his PMPS, especially with him in lower numbers. I'd test in 1/2 hour and if he's trending lower, maybe offer some LC. Later in the cycle you don't need as high a carb food to keep them up. I see that on 11/09, Mikey had a similar type of cycle with a late nadir.

Wendy took the thoughts right out of my head. I think a two or two of 3% or so now and before +10, if he's still in the 60s, and see what he does will give you some data on whether that will help him keep surfing instead of dropping into PMPS to a number you can't shoot.

Note: never feed HC later in the cycle for the purpose of bumping up to shoot. The goal is a very small amount of LC to get them to stay flat and surf into PMPS.

OK, I gave him a tiny bit of 3%, and he's up to 78 at +10. That makes me feel much better about shooting tonight. I really, really, really didn't want to skip.

Meanwhile, we've been out shoveling. It's still snowing, but not too much. I'm off again tomorrow, but we don't know about Don yet.

Great experiment! If he keeps going up tonight, then next time you might want to feed a little less. It would be great to get him surfing into PMPS.

Is this too low to shoot? Is this when the Borg Queen arrives? I'm I going to kill him if I shoot. I'm I going to kill him if I don't shoot? I'm perfectly calm! Really! Want to buy some coastland in Kansas?

He's surfing, so safe to shoot. There's a decent chance he may dance the limbo tonight. Are you ready for that? Of course, he could also bounce. You could always give him a bit higher carb food food for dinner. If, no when!, you shoot, I'd definitely get some early tests.

He's at 72 at +12.5. I pulled on my big girl panties and shot. But only because I'm afraid of the Borg Queen. :) I'll be back with a +1, if I don't have a heart attack. I've never shot green, let alone this low a green.

If you're that nervous, you can always get a +.5 test. You don't have to wait until +1. If you look at Gabby's SS, I've gotten early tests when I've shot low (like in the 50s).

I'm hoping this is your chance to deflate that rubber ball. Good shooting!

You can do this. Everyone here will support you and several of us may even stay up to keep an eye on things.
(I've got rehearsal this evening, but I can stop by in about 4 hours or so)

Thank you! I'm the Nervous Nellie type, but I have to do what's best for Mikey, even if it's terrifying.

way to go, mary! All my fingers and toes are crossed that tonight's shooting low is going to make a difference in his bouncing. I'd keep doling out little bits of low carb food to try to keep him surfing.

OK, I'm doing that. Can I wait until +2 to test now, or should I get a 1.5?

It is so hard to shot those low numbers. Great Job! Just get extra tests tonight and be ready to give HC food.

37 at +3. Giving HC. Not sure how much to give, but giving. Do I test in 30 min or sooner?

When Sami was on her way down the dose ladder I was so nervous, I was constantly trying to get her to eat. I think the practice is to give about a table spoon at a time and keep testing every 30 minutes or so until she levels out a bit. I was always so nervous that I would sometimes test even after just 15 minutes.

Just out of curiosity, what are you feeding for HC. I have some Dry Kitten Chow on hand from when I was trying to get another cat to gain weight before he passed away last week, and I figured I would give that to Sami when her numbers start dropping. I call it Kitty Crack and she goes nuts over it. In fact, I have been giving her one little morsel after I test and give her a shot, hoping that she won't start hating me for poking her all the time.

I tend to test every 30 minutes in the 40's and sooner in the 30's. You just need to give a couple tsps of gravy. If he's still in the 30's at the next test I'd add a drop of honey.

Dry food takes longer to hit the blood stream. Wet food gravy or karo/honey are better bets for getting the blood sugar up faster.

Good job, Mary! Congrats on the reducie. I know you're a little scared, but you can do this. If you
get anxious, go outside and shovel some snow until the next test!

OK, he's 38, so I gave HC with honey. Took a few minutes for him to settle down and eat it. I'll test again in about 20 min.

Thanks, Ella.

Speaking of the reducie, I'm actually pretty bummed about that. The last dose (.5) did nothing for him. I was so hopeful that this would give us some good numbers for awhile. I'll shoot through the bounce, assuming there is one, tomorrow. Then what dose does he get?

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I'm using FF with gravy for HC. I also have some Friskies with gravy on hand, but I've never used it. Honestly, Don bought it by accident.

Something I just noticed, this is the longest Mikey has ever been in green. :D:cool:

Any drop into the 30's means a dose reduction. So down to .5U again. Paws crossed he does better on it this time.

It is! I just wish we could keep him there. However, we will reduce to .5 after shooting through the bounce, if there is one. (It's Mikey, so there will be.) If the reduction fails, we'll be to the weekend and able to increase again. Increase to what? Who knows with Mikey?!?

Right now he's sitting here on the desk with his paw on my arm. Decent BGs make him feel so cheery.

woo-boy - he does like to do things his own way. i'm glad you caught that +2.

i'd stick with the gravy and/or karo, honey, maple syrup for bringing him up. over 50 i'd give LC.

He's something else. I'm soooo bummed about the reduction! Maybe this time the .5 will hold.

One other thing I wanted to ask. I'm not ready to switch him over to Lev yet, but it's something that I'm thinking about. In order to do that, I'd have to convince my vet to prescribe it. Does anyone have any links to scientific articles I could give him to persuade him? I want to get Mikey in soon to check out his teeth, and that would be a good time to plant the seed. I'm positive he'll never prescribe it without talking it over with the practice owner, so this will take some time. Meanwhile, they have a discount on dentals right now! Although I'm not so sure he needs one. His breath smells like cat food, not anything else.

Sometimes it seems like all the little duckies have to get in order for a cat to become regulated. Infections are one of them, and bladder or dental infections are so common that it seems like some cats improve tremendously when they get a dental.

I don't think there is anything out there about Lev specifically for cats, but i'll take a look for you later - can't do it at the moment. What we have - abundantly - is spreadsheets of cats that have switched to Lev and had an improvement in bouncing. Not every cat does, but most that make the switch seem to.
