When we were at the clinic today, the vet said Mao pooped lots because she ate too much, since she gained 0.2lb, my vet said the flagyl actually worked for her, so I am gonna continue giving the flagyl, and the vet also gave me some probiotic. When I asked her why there's lot oil came out of Mao, she said that she didn't know, then she expressed Mao's gland, said it's full. I was hoping the expression would stop her leaking out oil, but it didn't work, lots oil dropped out since we got home. Mao has an oily tail and tummy.
I just noticed that she is shaking a little bit, is she in pain? She sits there, but she doesn't sit sill. She ate well today, very hungry, I added water to her food, she didn't mind, but she vomited once, did I add too much water, how much should I add to her food? The vet said whatever she could tolerate it.
I wasn't able to give her enough fluid today because she was not cooperating, it's hard. Her numbers were high today, no ketones. BTW, I couldn't find any place to buy fluid, I went to Walgreen and Costco and CVS.

Some kitties will feel a little sore after anal sac expression. Mao should feel better tomorrow. Paws crossed the oiliness will reduce now that things are cleared up. Good news on no ketones.

I add about a couple tsp of water to each of Neko's meals. But she gets several mini meal so it adds up.

The oiliness is just getting worse. She left it on my bed, table, everywhere in my apartment. Is there any kind of diaper for cats? I don't know if it's from her anal sac or from her intestines. What's wrong with her? My vet just didn't have an idea. Should I bring her for x-ray, or maybe some other tests? How can the problem be found?
She ate 21oz food so far today, she's very hungry, crying for food all the time. It's impossible to feed her small meals. I don't know how to deal with her hunger. Her numbers were sky high.
hopeless!

Mao is bouncing from her low (to her) numbers yesterday. Bounces can take up to 6 cycles to clear, then her numbers should get better as well as her appetite.

You can get doggie diapers in small sizes. I've also heard of people getting newborn size 1 people diapers and cutting a hole for the tail.

Julie --

From what I've seen on the web, what you're describing is usually the result of the anal glands. If the problem doesn't resolve in a day or two, it may be the the anal glands were infected. I'd talk to your vet if it continues. If the vet is stumped, would it be possible to ask your vet to do a telephone consultation with a local vet school? Has your vet done any diagnostic procedures like an x-ray or ultrasound?

Also, when did this start? Was it with the switch to canned food? If so, if you look on Dr. Lisa's list, see what the fat content is for Mao's food. See if you can find a lower fat food. However, like I said, if you do some research on the web, while certainly not the "authority," it sounds like an oily discharge is usually due to anal gland problems.

she just let out too much oil, not little drops, but big spots. there must be some serious problems. I think she had little oily fur down there and I did not pay attention to it, after she took the Flagyl, I found some oily drops near the litter box and now it's getting worse everyday.
I feed her EVO chicken and turkey, the vet said she needed low protein food. The EVO is low protein, low carb, but high fat, if give her the low fat food, the p & c are high.

I would take her to another vet, that does not sound normal. Does it smell like poo? Could she be having bowel issues?
Do you think maybe the high fat content in the Evo could be causing that? Poor kitty, I think I read she had renal issues?

Terri

I am stumped but I would sure want to know whats causing it. As I said I would take her maybe someplace else since it seems to be getting worse?
By chance did this start when you put her on the EVO?

Terri

Mao needs low protein & low cab food due to her kidney disease and diabetes, If the food is low p & c, the fat is high.

So sorry she has so much going on. I hope that maybe you can find something to get her comfortable. I am sure its very hard to find foods to accomodate both diabetes and kidney issues.

Terri

Do you have the lab values for Mao's kidney issues? In most cases, people are more concerned about the phosphorus levels than the protein. It may be worth talking to your vet about a trial on a different food to see if a lower fat diet helps to alleviate the problem and if this has an effect on kidney values.

Getting a tissue sample the way the vet suggested is an invasive procedure. It's a biopsy. I don't know the relative advantage of a biopsy vs. an ultrasound. It may be that getting a second opinion would be worthwhile. How far are you from UConn? They have a vet school.

Sienne,
Sorry I missed your post. The vet said Mao's phosphours level is OK, she needs low protein food, maybe her protein level is high. It doesn't look like that the food caused the leaking oil. She has a gurgling tummy, she needed food right after poo. She's shaking if she did not get enough food. She feels cold and needs to stay with a heater. The vet gave her a wrong medication, the flagyl made it, she pooped lot but formed stools before taking the flagyl, the first day she took the medision I found oil drops near her litter box, her stools were soft with lots oil since then. Mao was treated ketoacidosis at a hospital, there is a vet who she specializes in cat, I made an appointment with her, hope this is a good vet. I am not too far from UConn, thank you for remaindering me.
