Okay so my plan is....to start insulin tomorrow morning? Unless anyone thinks we should give it more time, but from the replies yesterday, it does seem like the best option is getting this under control asap.

My question is: How much insulin? How often to monitor to start with?

I am worried (since we picked up all the dry food and his BG is still high) that it could be due to another issue. His teeth and gum lines look really bad :( Just cant afford a vet checkup or dental right now :( I am trying the best I can, so not sure what to do at this point.

I am also worried. Do I call Jupiters vet tomorrow to let them know Im starting him back on insulin? I know the vet is going to want to see Jupiter before I start giving insulin but I have absolutely no money to get him to the vet right now. I think hes also probably going to ask where I am getting insulin. (A friend who lives nearby is going to give me a little bit of hers to get started)

Copy/pasted from previous condo:
1/23/15 7:15pm - BG - 421
1/24/15 8:30am - BG - 295 (13.25 hours since tested last. about 12 hours since all dry food picked up and put away)
1/24/15 11:15am - BG - 252
1/24/15 2:20pm - BG - 238
1/24/15 4:15pm - BG - 270
1/24/15 8:15pm - BG - 294

Due to monetary issues I have had to feed Jupiter some dry food. He seemed to be doing very well with it at first, but then yesterday I noticed he was drinking more water....then today I noticed he was drinking A LOT more water. I was concerned because the last time I saw him sleeping next to his water bowl, was when he was first diagnosed with diabetes. Hes been sleeping next to the water all day - and his water intake is crazy high. So I decided to test his BG and its at 421. :( I feel really horrible about having to feed him dry food, and I really do try to do the very best I possibly can for him.

ALL of the dry food has been picked up and put away. Ive received some help so that I can switch him back to only the low carb Fancy feast.

Now my question is, can his BG go back down without insulin since I am switching back to the low carb FF?
Is there a testing schedule I should follow for now?
Opinions about waiting to give insulin for a little bit to see if his BG goes down on its own with LC food?

I would really appreciate any and all advice & opinions :)

Jupiter has been doing incredibly well! Jupiter and I have been so blessed to have this past year together. His last chemo was more then a year ago on January 4th. He is getting around so well, and hes full of life. So before this recent spike in BG - Jupiter was doing absolutely amazing. Thank you to everyone here on FDMB for all of your support through this whole process. I do apologize that I havent given more updates.

I would see if you can scrape together some cash for a vet visit. Even if the plan is to get Jupe on an antibiotic because of the dental issues, the ABs may help to bring his BG numbers down. That may buy you enough time to put together the funds for a dental.

:bighug::bighug::bighug: looks like the dry food was a false economy :( welcome back

Dental issues will generally cause higher BG so the sooner that can be attended to the better. I heard mention of something called care credit I think in the health board yesterday that may be able to assist with getting the dental done. I'll go back and see if I can find it - brb

ETA: yes it is called Care Credit @Marje and Gracie mentioned it, sorry I don't know more about it but I gather they give fast approval loans for vet care.

It would be a good idea to touch base with his vet before you start insulin but I'd make it a priority. If he's not got insulin on board and he potenitally has an infection, if he quits eating/drinking, it could set him up potentially for DKA. As long as he's eating well, he's likely 0k but if he quits eating for any reason (e.g. mouth hurts), then you have a recipe for DKA. I hope you are checking his ketones, too.
