Uhhhh...where did THAT come from? Here I am thinking I'm gonna see a high 200, and wham! Cobb surprises me with a blue. And not even a high blue! It's a mid-blue!!

Obviously I'll stay on him throughout the day and see where he decides to go. I do appreciate it being a day cycle for once.

Uhhhhhhh....attention all!! Don't go anywhere!! We're seeing some action.

Re: 1/25 Cobb AMPS 146 +3 151 +6.25 59

great!

here's where it gets a little tricky with a higher dose cat. Don't be afraid to go with a higher carb food and/or a larger quantity of food than what you see others here using to control low numbers. A tsp. or two at a time probably won't cut it. It looks like when Cobb had low numbers before he kept surfing for a while instead of bouncing right away, so I can see that you know what you're doing.

Since he's just at 60, I should wait to give him any HC food though, right? See if he'll surf a little bit like last time?

Re: 1/25 Cobb AMPS 146 +3 151 +6.25 59

that sounds good. 59 is a good number as long as he doesn't drop much more. Don't be afraid to do what you have to do if he drops, though.

Re: 1/25 Cobb AMPS 146 +3 151 +6.25 59

Yeayyy Cobb. It takes an ounce of 15% medium carb food to bring Ozy up. Ozy is about 17-18 lbs. HOw big is Cobb?

Someone suggested I keep notes on how he responds to carbs when he goes low so I did this (it looks better in my SS:

date low action response insulin dose
19-Dec 42 fed 1.5 oz FF 15% carb 82 in .5hr;103 in 1hr 6.5U Lantus
2-Jan 52 fed 1 oz FF 15% carb 69 in 1 hr. 6.5U Levemir
4-Jan 48 fed 1 oz FF 15% carb 58in 30 min 6 U Levemir
10-Jan 44 fed 1 oz FF 15% carb 60 in .5hr,55 in 1hr 5.5 Levemir

Like Libby said - 59 is a good number.

It's not like it showed up at +3...

easy does it. . keep a close eye. . intervene if he drops

Nice numbers this morning. Looks like Cobb is listening to the LL aunties and surfing green. It helps that this happens on a Saturday, huh? Hope you didn't have other plans for this morning!

Cobb just threw up some bile. He hasn't eaten since this morning - as normal and wasn't asking for food. His BG is 57, fell a bit since last hour. I gave him about a teaspoon of gravy.

Surf safe, Cobb! I'm keeping my eye on you. Nice to see you in the Green Lagoon!

What a great way to spend a Caturday!   This is where you get to learn that Each (high dose) Cat is Different. Depending where Neko is in the cycle, I can feed as little as a half tsp of HC to see movement in the numbers. Earlier in the cycle needs more. But I love these beautiful long green surfs! :-D :-D As Donaleen said, keep notes on what and how much you feed.

Re: 1/25 Cobb AMPS 146 +3 151 +6.25 59 +7 65 +8 57 +9 83 +10

Did I do the right thing by giving Cobb a little gravy when he threw up? It's probably because he was hungry, but I had a minute of mild panic and since he dropped from 65 to 57 (I know that's within that 20%), figured (in the moment) that I should give him a bit.

Does anyone know the carbs of the Friskies Special Diet Chicken in Gravy is? Just for my records?

Nice! :-D :-D :-D

Dr. Lisa's food chart has the Friskies Special Sliced Chicken in Gravy at 15%. I generally don't feed HC for the 50's during the daytime cycle. Night time is a different matter cause I usually want her UP so I can sleep. But I've never had Neko throw up on me when she's low. Giving a bit of food then is probably a good idea. Next time you could try a bit of cooked chicken breast or other no carb food if you have it. These are the times (daytime) when you can experiment with zero, low, medium or high carb and see what the reaction is.

Over time, you'll get more comfortable with the 50's. The first few times are nerve wracking. Good Cobb for during that during the day. cat_pet_icon

Thanks Wendy! Like I said I had a momentary mini-panic attack and felt like I should get him up a little bit. It was the first time with me feeding to avert him dropping more, although he probably would have ridden it out just fine. Hindsight being 20/20...I should have waited, given some chicken or his regular food, and tested again in 30 minutes. I'm keep that in mind for next time.

However...I see the big bounce has begun. I suppose it was expected. There's no keeping a secret from Cobb's liver for long

High dose kitties can react differently to food than other FD cats so using food to manage a cycle can be trickier. Better safe than sorry the first time. I once gave Neko some higher %carb LC and it caused her to dive down. Doing as you suggest, trying chicken or regular food then testing 30 minutes later would be perfect. I still haven't done the medium carb experiment because Neko's not usually considerate to surf green during the daytime.

Sorry to see Mr. Liver figured out what was going on, but Cobb's been clearing his bounces so much better and faster lately, that I'm sure he'll be a good kitty and come back down for you soon!

Beautiful surf for him today though! You're doing great Suzanne and we all know Cobb's not an easy one to figure out.

Take advantage of the bounce and get some sleep!!! (If babybean will cooperate too!)

sorry i missed the party, but you handled everything like a pro, suzanne. hindsight is kinda cruel, in my opinion, so just make a mental note of what you want to try next time and let it go! you're gathering data on what works and what doesn't.

so great to see Cobb back in greens again. even if he didn't stay there. it's actually comforting to know cats have this protective mechanism of bouncing. it's no doubt kept many diabetic cats alive! :-D

go cobb!
