Hey everyone, it’s been a while. Things have been pretty chaotic since before Christmas, and honestly, I’m not even sure where to start. It feels like it’s been one thing after another, and I just haven’t had the time or mental bandwidth to sit down and write on the forum. We also have a winter storm heading our way that’s about to slam into the East Coast, so I’ve been busy prepping for potential power outages.
Kai and I are both doing okay - mostly just going through the motions. However we have BIG NEWS! Kai finally had surgery on the 22nd to remove the mass that has been hanging over us for the past year. If anyone needs a refresher on the whole saga, you can read this post: 12/1 Kai AMPS 147, +2 99, PMPS 227, +2 216, +5 117 — NOT CANCER!
Anyway, that giant, ulcerating golf ball is finally gone. Kai is on day 2 of recovery, and I think he’s doing pretty well for a 13 (almost 14)-year-old cat with diabetes and CKD who just got cut in half. He’s mostly sleeping on his heating pad, which isn’t surprising. He began cleaning himself this morning, which he hasn't done for the past 2 days, so I think thats another good sign we are on the way to a good recovery.
My main concern right now is that his BG numbers are sky high. Between all the stressful vet visits, multiple fasting, the vet giving him 0.5 units in the middle of the day, and the major surgery itself, our insulin schedule and BG numbers are completely out of whack. Today the ReliOn meter read HI, and I had to pull out the AlphaTrak to get an actual number. If anyone has suggestions or tips for managing post-surgery recovery in a diabetic cats, I’m all ears (or eyes).
I hope everyone else is doing well. I’m going to try to read and catch up tonight, assuming the power stays on.
