Hey everyone, it’s been a while. Things have been pretty chaotic since before Christmas, and honestly, I’m not even sure where to start. It feels like it’s been one thing after another, and I just haven’t had the time or mental bandwidth to sit down and write on the forum. We also have a winter storm heading our way that’s about to slam into the East Coast, so I’ve been busy prepping for potential power outages.

Kai and I are both doing okay - mostly just going through the motions. However we have BIG NEWS! Kai finally had surgery on the 22nd to remove the mass that has been hanging over us for the past year. If anyone needs a refresher on the whole saga, you can read this post: 12/1 Kai AMPS 147, +2 99, PMPS 227, +2 216, +5 117 — NOT CANCER!

Anyway, that giant, ulcerating golf ball is finally gone. Kai is on day 2 of recovery, and I think he’s doing pretty well for a 13 (almost 14)-year-old cat with diabetes and CKD who just got cut in half. He’s mostly sleeping on his heating pad, which isn’t surprising. He began cleaning himself this morning, which he hasn't done for the past 2 days, so I think thats another good sign we are on the way to a good recovery.

My main concern right now is that his BG numbers are sky high. Between all the stressful vet visits, multiple fasting, the vet giving him 0.5 units in the middle of the day, and the major surgery itself, our insulin schedule and BG numbers are completely out of whack. Today the ReliOn meter read HI, and I had to pull out the AlphaTrak to get an actual number. If anyone has suggestions or tips for managing post-surgery recovery in a diabetic cats, I’m all ears (or eyes).

I hope everyone else is doing well. I’m going to try to read and catch up tonight, assuming the power stays on.

Oh, sweet Kai! I’m so glad he’s showing signs of improving. His bg will get back to normal soon now that the big bad surgery and vet visits are over.. Take it easy Maddie—stay warm, and I’m hoping for no issues for you from the storm🤞🏻🤞🏻

Good to hear from you, and so glad to hear Kai is doing well post-surgery (BG aside). He looks very cute in his little recovery shirt. 😻

I don't have advice, though I suspect a little time to recover will help his BG settle along with the rest of his system - but I can see why you'd be concerned, of course. I hope someone will have something helpful to offer re: surgery. (I wonder if it would be worth posting in the main forum for a wider audience, since it's not really a Lantus-specific issue?)

Stay safe and warm, both of you! Lots of us are hunkering down for this one. I hope our utilities etc stay robust through it all.

Thank you Mary and Allie! I hope you both stay safe and warm during this cold weather also ❤️

Thank goodness the surgery is over! What meds did the vet send home with you? The SS just says pain med and antibiotic, so just wondering which one. Are you giving regular probiotics to him? Besides s. boullardii that is. Antibiotics can make the tummy feel off cause they also kill the good flora. s. boulardii mops up the bad bacteria but doesn't replace the good stuff.

Neko had surgery for a bony growth on her jawbone removed, also not cancerous. The vet recommended I give her buprenorphine 3 times a day, instead of her normal twice a day.

I suspect he's bouncing from however low he went on the night of surgery. Anesthesia can lower BG, a night time test might have been a good idea as he was sliding down all day. Right now it's just patience pants and waiting for the depot to fill up again.

Could you put that extra 0.5 units the vet gave on the spreadsheet? Do you know that it was Lantus. That might have also contributed to the slide down on surgery night.

Hey Wendy! They have him on Onisor and marbofloxacin. I will ask about the buprenorphine.
How do i put mid day insulin on the spreadsheet? I have it noted on the cell, but you can't tell unless you mouse over that cell.
