Hello all! Ben seems to be doing well on this dose - wondering if he's looking for another reduction? Today was the last day of his Pred - going to be trying him on Meloxicam after a "washout" period. We'll see if it helps his mobility better than the Pred did, too - let's hope so!!

Thankfully, Darwin bounced right back to normal, and is doing very well now - phew!

Unfortunately, we just rechecked our civvie's labwork (she's 13.5 years), and requires mild sedation for blood draws. Maddie's looking like she's in the early stages of CKD. Her BUN is high normal at 34, CREA is 2.9, USG is 1.024, but no protein in the urine. She hasn't lost any weight, is not drinking more or urinating more. She's been on Avoderm Chicken Formula because it is lower in Phosphorous, but the doc wants to switch her to Royal Canine Renal diet. We're reluctant to do this, and have been scouring Tanya's page for advice. I thought I might see what you guys might recommend for CKD diets? I thought about looking for Dave's, but nowhere nearby us sells it. Any advice would be great!

I wouldn't do RC. Keep giving high protein food. Was phosphorus high on the labs?

In fact, I had to get Marge to read my civvie Precious' labs. I can look in my messages and see what she recommends for stage 2 CKD if you like.

That’s my thought too. We really don’t want to put her on a low protein diet. Her Phosphorus is normal. We switched her to Avoderm last year because her numbers had trended up a little, but were still normal.

That would be great if you wouldn’t mind. I was debating posting all of them to get some thoughts. She just seems so well right now, but she’s my girlfriend’s special kitty, she she’s so worried and upset.

Marje told me to look at Tanya's page so you are ahead! I just looked again and Precious is more in stage 3, but was told to keep doing what I am doing and find low phosphorus foods that are also high protein.

"A cat with CKD needs good, high quality protein with the protein making up 45-50% of calories. You want to strive for foods that are as low in P as you can get them (you can use Dr. P’s charts)."

She also had this to say about subq fluids:
Subq fluids are not typically started until the creatinine is consistently above 300-350 (Canada) or 3.5-4 (US).

I hope this helps!
