Yesterday was shot in the rear.

I had to baby sit for ALOT of kids while my girlfriend went to a funeral. So, after watching 2 2yr olds, a 1 yr old, 2 3yr olds and a 6 yr old for 9 hours(did have help with 2 of them), testing was nonexistant. And he wasn't having anything to do with the pmps. No way no how.

Gator: Mickey is still having issues with the poo. He does well for a couple of days, then gets rugs etc. I am considering the testing via mail.
I am not sure about the change if I was at home the other day or not> If I remember, it was when I was on the 2pm shift. I start night shift tonight at 10p. So now we are on the 9a-9p shoot time.
It feels like I am on the same road as in the beginning. We are going up and up with more and more insulin....ugh

Well, we can just hope that after that day with the low numbers you just dropped back a bit too low. Hopefully you will find his good dose lower than the 3.8 that Mickey used to be at. Have you gotten the fortiflora yet? Maybe that'll do done good. How long has Mickey had poop issues? Did the beginning of the problems coincide with anything that you can remember? Sorry if I'm asking you questions that gator or someone else has probably already asked.

You are doing the best that you can. That's all that matters. Many here have jobs at home or are retired and partners that can help. 9 cats with different dietary issues, a job with a wacky schedule, an uncooperative cat, normal life demands and more is a lot to handle. Just keep plugging away at making the incremental improvements and optimizations that you are.

What about the metronidazole [Flagyl] have you ever given that [or any other anti biotic recently within the past couple months targeting the GI or other]? Again I'm not suggesting you run out and do that if you haven't I'm just curious.

Re: 1/23 Mickey amps 340 +6 272

Good lord, Peggy, I love my grandchildren but I don't think I could have survived the day you have described with all those children! I want to second what Gator said about the Flagyl. Squamee had diarrhea and the Flagyl did wonders, even tho she hated taking it and would drool a lot of it out of her mouth.

Re: 1/23 Mickey amps 340 +6 272

I think it is a good option too. But if Peggy has any testing for various bug in the near future she should probably hold off on any antibiotics if possible. Also if it's [or other ABs] already been done then that could influence the results of any testing that might be getting done.

Of course one can just skip to the treatment part and skip the diagnostic part. And even if the diagnostic part come back negative the metronidazole [Flagyl] is a good option as it seems to have anti-diarreah properties that may or may not be related to the antimicrobial properties. It is important that the dosing be considered though. If a higher dose is chosen it can have neurotoxic [and other] side effects and should only be given for a shorter period. If on a longer period does then the dose needs to be less. Make sure to ask your vet about this to make sure THEY understand that it has neurotoxic effects.

It was quite brutal. A whole lotta diaper changes! I did need an adult beverage afterwards.
My son will be 28 next month, so I am way out of practice!

Mickey had been on two rounds of flagyl. Once the dose was 1.0mg too low and once on 1.5 which was supposed to be the correct dose two times a day. I am a bit leary on giving it to him again.
He hasn't taken any other meds.

FortiFlora will be arriving on the 26th via UPS. I also ordered Pro-pectalin Anti-diarrheal gel. Give that a shot.

Charliemeow- I am thinking since I had him eating the Purina proplan wet chicken and liver. It seems a bit better since he has stopped eating that.

Well if it didn't work in the past then.... So when was the last round of it?

Wow, well that might complicate the results of testing. Not all the bugs of

might be affected by the metro. I don't know. And if you really wanted to do the Helicobacter I'm not sure how that might be affected by it.

From http://www.vin.com/proceedings/Proceedi ... &O=Generic
Isolates from different cats differed in growth rate in culture, intrinsic susceptibility to metronidazole and their ability to colonize stomachs of H. pylori-free cats. The pattern of metronidazole sensitivity and the role of genes metabolizing metronidazole were similar in strains from people and cats. Further tests showed that chronically infected cats could be cured of resident H. pylori with amoxicillin (20mg/kg PO BID 14days), metronidazole (10-15mg/kg PO BID) and clarithromycin (7.5mg/kg PO BID). This yielded 100% eradication in 12/12 cats 1 month post treatment.
So metro is part of the routine that Helicobacter is susceptible to. I do not know enough to tell you when would be a good time to test for Helicobacter given your past use of metro. And I do not know enough to know if any of the organisms in the Zoologix diarrhea panel are susceptible to metro. All good questions for your vet. I'm not sure Zoologix would advise you of anything - that is not their position. You could try to post in Health too to ask specific questions about this. But I'm not sure anyone here knows about this stuff.

From http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18164874 2008
Fifty-two animals (19%) were positive for the isolation of more than one genus. No significant statistical correlation was found between any isolates of Campylobacter, Helicobacter or Anaerobiospirillum spp. or the various co-infection rates, and the presence of diarrhea in either dogs or cats.
So... I'm not sure of the significance of 52 animals but anyway it is food for thought at least. Sure wish I had access to the full study.
