1/23 Jack: 206@amps, 280@+3 increased back to 8.25u INSULIN QUESTION

Well, it was a promising morning reading, but the +3 is depressing. We had seven days of 8 units, never got under 120, so we are back up to 8.25units today. I think I'm gonna hold out for at least 3 dark green readings before reducing again. Maybe I reduced too soon when I saw that 83. Or maybe the big, fat jerk cat needs to stop eating kibble. Or maybe both....

QUESTION ON INSULIN:
Anyone notice a difference in switching from one manufacturer to another? The pharmacy refilled Jack's insulin with a different manufacturer. Also, when I get to the end of the bottle, should I discard the remainder if I can't get a full dose? The vials say not to mix insulins, but if they are the same dose, what's the difference? Thanks in advance for any advice.

No word on Abby yet...she is at the vet clinic. I am waiting for a call with the echo-cardiogram results. If I don't hear from them by noon Eastern time, I'm calling them for a status.

Morning Christine, you always crack me up , please let us know when you hear anything about Abby .
I don't see why switching manufacturers would make a difference ,
Don't know about mixing different insulin's, hopefully someone will come along and answer you question. Sending prayers for Abby :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Christine,
I hope you learn about Abby's condition soon! Waiting is the worst!
I, too, have no idea if insulin can somehow be different across manufacturers.
I don't think that's the case for humans for other drugs - like I take Kirkland brand antihistamine, which ingredients are exactly same as Allegra but way cheaper than the brand. I don't see the difference.
Adding the leftover insulin to a new one? Isn't it kind of hard to do it, because of the seal on the vial? Maybe that is why?
Like @Diane Tyler's Mom says, someone with a lot of experience should know it.
Hope Abby's doing well!

Hi, I would not mix different manufacturers insulins, they might be made with the same active ingredient but the stabilizers and other additives might possibly be different and you don’t know the interaction when mixed. For example if pH is slightly different it could lead to precipitation.

I also would not mix insulin from different manufacturers. Even though they are considered interchangeable and it’s easy think of them as “generic” versions of the same drug, (a) they’re actually biosmilars, not generics (there’s a difference), and (b) insulin is a hormone, not a drug (so not exactly like comparing brand name aspirin to generic aspirin, although for some drugs you do actually have to be careful if switching).

@Sienne and Gabby (GA) have you by chance found anything in the medical literature about mixing glargine from various mfgrs?

Hi Christine, I love your name calling. You should hear me swear at my little prissy princess when she’s being a bad girl.
Thinking of you and sweet Abby today with positive thoughts for her!!
And of course the infamous Jack!!

I was thinking if I could only get 4 units out of the old vial and had to open the new one to get 4 more in the same syringe. Seems like from what @kelcie and @JL and Chip say it's not a good idea to mix them. Is it ok to do a PM shot from one manufacturer (old vial) and then the AM shot from the new manufacturer (new vial)??

Thanks, I won't mix, you're right, I wasn't thinking about it the right way. Is it ok to do the PM shot entirely from one manufacturer (old vial) and the AM shot entirely from the new vial and new manufacturer? Or do I have a big problem on my hands now?

ABBY UPDATE: the echo-cardiogram came back as cleared for anesthesia. She does have the start of thickening of the left side of the heart (some long medical term I can't remember) but otherwise heart healthy so I gave the go ahead to do the dental surgery today. NOW I'm waiting for a call to say she is done and I can pick her up. Thank you all for your kind words, support and good vibes...all very much appreciated.

Oh Christine that is such great news about Abby, Sending prayers for a successful dental. Will watch for your post tomorrow.

PM one manufacturer and AM the next shot is fine.

Sounds like Abby has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy? Shortened to HCM usually, as per Neko’s laundry list of conditions. Nothing you need to do at first, just keep an eye on it. Neko’s cardio vet said I should get her regular to keep an ear out for any heart sound changes. Neko had two dentals and second SRT with HCM. We had one kitty here with it for five years, passed from something else. Hope it’s equally boring for Abby.:bighug:
