Due to monetary issues I have had to feed Jupiter some dry food. He seemed to be doing very well with it at first, but then yesterday I noticed he was drinking more water....then today I noticed he was drinking A LOT more water. I was concerned because the last time I saw him sleeping next to his water bowl, was when he was first diagnosed with diabetes. Hes been sleeping next to the water all day - and his water intake is crazy high. So I decided to test his BG and its at 421. :( I feel really horrible about having to feed him dry food, and I really do try to do the very best I possibly can for him.

ALL of the dry food has been picked up and put away. Ive received some help so that I can switch him back to only the low carb Fancy feast.

Now my question is, can his BG go back down without insulin since I am switching back to the low carb FF?
Is there a testing schedule I should follow for now?
Opinions about waiting to give insulin for a little bit to see if his BG goes down on its own with LC food?

I would really appreciate any and all advice & opinions :)

Jupiter has been doing incredibly well! Jupiter and I have been so blessed to have this past year together. His last chemo was more then a year ago on January 4th. He is getting around so well, and hes full of life. So before this recent spike in BG - Jupiter was doing absolutely amazing. Thank you to everyone here on FDMB for all of your support through this whole process. I do apologize that I havent given more updates.

If it were me, I'd be doing a curve tomorrow.... at least an every 3 hour one. write notes of when fed....
see how the pattern is....

and then the next day if numbers are still above 200's.... start on the tiny dose.....

you know the dance....

the sooner the better his chance to get right back otj...

Jaime,
Have missed you and Jupe, but didn't want you to need to return because of high BG numbers!

You want to stay on top of this and rhiannon has a good idea to start. See if his numbers come down without the dry. But don't be too patient before calling his vet and letting them know what's going on.

I think it's awesome that he has adjusted so well since his surgery and chemo! Praying this is just a bump in the road for all of you.

Carl

Hey Jamie

I'm glad to hear Jupe has been doing so great. You can see how his BG does on the wet food and give it a try to see if his numbers come down. But I wouldn't wait too long. If it's not just the food, we need to get him back on insulin as soon as possible.

I know things can be tight and wet food is more expensive. But also remember the cost of treating diabetes....it's alot more than buying canned food. I'm so glad you caught it early and hoping that just by getting him back on canned food, his BG will come back down. And I know you always do the very best you can for Jupe.

Hi Jamie!! It's great to see you and Jupe again, but not for this reason!

I won't repeat what's already been said.....Just wanted to say "Hello" and wish you and Jupe great luck in getting him back to his OTJ status!

Come on Jupe! You can do it!

Hi Jamie!

I'm so happy to hear from you, but like the others, not for this reason. You have been so generous and helpful with me. I wish there was something I could do for you. Please keep us posted oh how things go with Jupiter. I hope changing the foods will bring him back down.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

Took Jupiters BG this morning which was 13.25 hours since the last time I took it.....and hes at 295

ALL the dry food was picked up about 12 hours ago. So within 12 hours of not eating the dry food.... he went from 421 to 295. A little bit of improvement but his BG is still way too high. Hoping it continues to go down more today.

Hi, Jamie.

Ditto on what others said -- great to hear from you but not because Jupe's numbers are high.

Is there any chance there's anything medical going on? Dental issues are notorious for throwing cats out of remission. The same is true for a UTI. It may not be a bad idea to get Jupiter in to see the vet.

Remember that it can take longer than any of us would like for dry to be processed out of a cat's system. You might want to price out some of the other food alternatives to see there's anything that's more cost effective than Fancy Feast. If you can get the larger cans of Friskies, they tend to be easier on the pocketbook.

well now hes at 252. its been 2.75 hours since last test. so he has come down a little bit more, but still way too high. hoping it continues to come down. will test again in 3 hours

Hi Jamie, sorry to see these numbers. Paws crossed Jupiter continues to slide on down as the dry leaves his system. Definity check out the 12oz cans, it brings the price per ounce way down, An awful lot of the costs are in the packaging. Do you have any discount food stores close by, they can have some real deals on petfood.

Jupiter doesnt like the friskies. He literally refuses to eat when he doesnt like something :( Ive also noticed his sister vomiting a lot more when she was eating the friskies. Thats why we feed them FF. I wish they would eat the friskies, its like half the cost of the FF.

Ive tried separating them for feeding, but then they just dont eat, they want out of the room. They know something is up.

glad to see you, like everyone else, but sorry to hear why. You've already gotten a ton of good advice - i'd just echo that i wouldn't wait very long to restart the insulin - sooner is better than later if you're hoping for him to go back into remission. Typically people have to be aggressive in dosing with a cat that's come out of remission. You also want to figure out why if it may be something more than the dry food. Maybe not - hard to know. But addressing the reason for coming out of remission is important.

I'm sorry about Jupiter's high numbers. I hope changing his food back to wet food will bring them down. I'm glad he's been doing well otherwise. Good luck. We're here for you.

Which dry food?
Evo Cat and Kitten dry is about 8% calories from carbohydrates.
Young Again 0 Carb is about 5% calories from carbohydrates.

Friskies pates are among the most economical canned foods to feed and about 8% calories from carbohydrates for the standard pates.

I'm so sorry to hear that Jupiter's numbers have gone back up. I don't have any advice on the numbers/insulin but did want to mention that you might keep an eye out for Fancy Feast coupons. They recently had one for $1.00 off 20 cans. It's not a huge amount, but every little bit helps. (We're in penny-pinching mode right now so those dollars really add up for us.) I don't know if the coupon is still available; I can't tell since I reached the printing limit on it. Sigh.

@Shelly & Jersey Can you save the coupon as a PDF? Then you can print it as many times as you want! Also check out Target and Costco, they often offer cases for quite a bit less than individual cans.

@Ann & Tess I printed from coupons.com, which won't let you save as a PDF. Each coupon has it's own unique bar code to prevent unauthorized copying. Small-town living is also a pain in the rump. The nearest Target is an hour away and Costco is even farther. I told DH I was going to become a crazy coupon lady and buy a mansion in a big city with all of my savings. I don't think he's holding his breath on that one. Thanks for the tips, though. I appreciate them.

Hi Jamie,
I hope that Jupe will get back in his low numbers soon. I agree that a vet visit might be a good idea, just to rule out infection. But switching back to wet food is a must.
It's wonderful that your boy is doing so well after the amputation and the chemo. He is a champ!

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

I have a binder full of coupons, alphabetically ordered. I used to mail out cat food coupons to others on the board. I have those printable fancy feast coupons as well as ones that were clipped from inserts.

It was a high carb dry food....I gave him it because I got it for a dollar.... with coupons and other discounts... and its all I could afford.

I am worried that it could be something other then the dry food. He has been eating dry for a little while now....not all dry...but between him and his sister I put out some FF and some dry food and yesterday he ate his portion and their portions all at once...his gum lines are red and his teeth look pretty bad. I havent been able to afford even the FF, let alone a vet visit or dental :(

Im really trying to do the best I possibly can.

so not much of a change between last two tests.... but atleast its a little tiny bit better.

Hes hiding under the couch again. Its been months since he did this. He used to do this when he was having problems with the diabetes and when his leg hurt :(

Friskies pates come in a 13 ounce can. I've gotten them in Columbus, Ohio for $1.80 to $1.05 per can of that size. That would make about 4-5 meals.
Brushing the teeth, if they are not painful, may help with the dental issues.
