Hello LL,

It is with a heavy heart that I am posting here after what appears to be the end of our Honeymoon. Since Kismet went OTJ, I've tested his urine regularly and his bg periodically. About 11:30am EST, I gave him a urine test which came back positive so I pulled out my testing supplies and got a reading of 184! :( I called up the pharmacy to see if he had any refills from his old script and ordered a refill to be picked up in an hour.

I recently introduced a new food into his diet last week. I started giving him EVO 95% Beef, Venison, and Chicken in addition to FF Classics. I'm wondering if the new food might account for the sudden spike? I am going to give him FF only tonight and hope that I can coax these numbers down with food. I am hesitant to start insulin until I have more stats. I am going to test him throughout the day until I have to leave around 5pm. Unfortunately, my husband and I are out of the house all day tomorrow. I would be scared to shoot him tomorrow morning without being around to monitor.

Ughhhh. SO sad today :(

Any suggestions/advice? Thanks.

Courtney and Kismet

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +2.5 184

Hi, Courtney.

I would do some additional monitoring to see if this is a trend or just a wonky number. Also, and perhaps even more importantly, when was the last time Kismet was at the vet for a check up? That unexpectedly higher than usual number could be an indication of an infection brewing. I'd get Kismet checked out thoroughly including whether a dental is needed. We've had way too many kitties come back from the Falls due to dental issues.

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +2.5 184

Hi Sienne,

He hasn't been to the vet since his post OTJ trial check-up. She said to come back in 6 months, but I think you're right that a check-up is order. I'm concerned that it is not just a wonky number since the urine test came back positive, too, which indicates his levels from hours earlier, right?

I've been brushing his teeth every single day, and last time he was at the vet, she remarked at what good shape his teeth were in. I'm hoping that this is just a fluke though.
I am going to test in another 30 minutes (exactly one hour since the 184 reading).

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +2.5 184

Hi guys .. sorry to see you back here, but hopefully it is for a very short time! You made sure all the testing supplies were up to date, right? I'm sure you did, just wanted to toss that out there "just in case"

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +2.5 184 +3.5 189

Hi PeterDevonMocha -- yes, all supplies are up to date. I've been using the same strips for the past few months (testing periodically) and have one more strip left in this lot before I open a new batch.

I've booked him in with the vet tomorrow -- DH will be dropping off/picking up. Poor little guy has to fast until 3:30pm (earliest appt. available). He is going to be one unhappy kitty tomorrow at breakfast.

I think a vet visit is a great idea - definitely before resorting to insulin again. Muffin's back here for her second time in 4 months after going OTJ, due to pancreatitis flares. And maybe the new food is contributing. I would sure try cutting that out and seeing if that makes a difference.

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +2.5 184 +3.5 189 +4.5 199

Hi Anne, I am so sorry to hear about Muffin. Hopefully both our furbabies will get to the Falls again!

I am hoping this is just the result of new food or maybe like Sienne said, the result of an infection. Now that I think of it, his gums bled a little bit when I brushed his teeth on Sunday night. Maybe there is a little infection? He is acting totally normal otherwise. All 5 p's, and minimal water input/output. He's not drinking excessively or urinating a lot, so this is indicative that I caught him early. I gave him a urine test last week and he was normal and last gave him a blood test 1 and 1/2 weeks ago, and his reading was in the 60s.

He is acting more clingy today than usual. He has been following me around and is extra cuddly.

+4.5 is 199. I opened a brand new bottle of strips, too. I should be able to get 3 more tests in before I have to leave. I am going to tell DH to wait to feed until I come home (around 10pm, an hour after dinner time) so I can test once more before he eats. It will also be his last meal until he comes home from the vet, so I think feeding him a little bit later is a good idea anyway. He hardly ate his breakfast this morning, about half a can of a FF and EVO mix. He's not begging or campaigning for food, either, which is highly unusual.

He is such a champ! I thought he would be unhappy about the hourly testing, but he purrs and purrs as I rub his ear with the rice sock. He absolutely LOVES getting his ears cleaned, and I ball up a tissue to hold inside his ear when I prick.

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +5.5 159 OMG! LMAO! Found the smoking g

OMG Guys, ROFLMAO! I found the smoking gun! The new order of EVO came with a free sample of dog dry food that I saved for my brother who has a couple of dogs. My bro came over on Saturday and I gave it to him, but I guess he left it next to the couch where he was sitting. DH just found the bag behind the couch, torn open, and half eaten! HAHA! I am fairly certain now that this is the only reason his BG is so high today. I am keeping the appt with the vet, though, just in case.

Feeling very relieved and hopeful. It is amazing how dangerous kibble is ohmygod_smile

yes, continue monitoring. hopefully, he'll come down on his own. sometimes it can take as much as 3 days for the carbs to clear the system.
paws crossed!

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +8.5 114 LMAO! Found the smoking gun!!

Loving this drop! I have to pop out to work and won't be home until PMBG+1, but am having DH hold dinner an hour so I can test him once last time before dinner when I get home. Hope that he will be in the green when I get back. Naughty kitty.

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +8.5 114 LMAO! Found the smoking gun!!

Lol!!!! He must have thought it was his birthday or something! Lets hope he goes back down soon!

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +8.5 114 LMAO! Found the smoking gun!!

Contraband! Hopefully Kismet will work through that and be done with the scare! YIKES!

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +8.5 114 LMAO! Found the smoking gun!!

HAHA!! That's too funny! I sincerely hope that's all this was about - and I bet it is.

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +8.5 114 LMAO! Found the smoking gun!!

Contrabandista cat!

I meant to ask if there was any chance of contraband. I think Kismet must have thought he hit the mother lode!

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +8.5 114 LMAO! Found the smoking gun!!

Oh my! Glad you found that....
that dog food tends to be 30-40% carbs.... ohmygod_smile

paws crossed that you found the answer!

Re: 1/22 Kismet AMBG +8.5 114 LMAO! Found the smoking gun!!

Glad you found the contraband and hope his numbers fall back in line quickly!

Have a great night -

Kismet. What a stir you have created for your beans!!! Yep, thought you found the treats of the season. No more! But too bad for you, you still have to visit the vet. Let's hope there is nothing wrong with you. The falls are ready and waiting.

Hope you are doing well Courtney.

teehee, he is contrabandisto! Rhiannon, it's loaded with all kinds of stuff -- quinoa, carrots, fruits, chickpeas ohmygod_smile At least it had no grains, though. Karen -- we're doing great! Kis gave us quite a scare this morning, but I am keeping paws crossed that all will go well at the vet. Hope all's well with you and FB!

I got home an hour after he normally eats and tested him and got a nice 104. I put down some FF Tender Liver and Chicken, but he hasn't touched it. I wonder if the kibble upset his tummy? He's acting fine, otherwise... all 5 p's in order. It is an usually cool night here in South Florida so we have all the windows open and he is perched in his favorite window watching the outside puds.

On Courtney....did I ever get a good laugh out of this once you found the contraband. I'm so glad you did! And I'm thrilled Kismet is coming back down!
