Rocket & his Mom

Member Since 2010
Hello Everyone,
rough night in the sense that he didn't seem to settle....ate ok for the most part but the behaviour he has lately is puzzling indeed.

each time he eats he grooms/licks non stop...then he runs straight into the tub where he sits there until i come get him....

at 3 am i got up to feed him...he ate everything on his plate...i was so tired that after i picked up the dish from where he was...i went back to bed...i totally forgot about this "new" behaviour...so i let him be...at 5:10 am i woke up and i looked for him only to find him in the tub...seems like he was there for quite some time...took him to his bed and he seemed ok....

6 am pheno and pepcid in place....he seemed a bit restless but i knew i had to test/feed at 6:30...so what would have been his amps he was 124...so no insulin...fed him 1/2 can of proplan...he ate everything...soon after he ate the licking started and by then DH was in the shower and Rocket waited outside the door....

it is the oddest thing now...and i know the pheno doesn't cause those "side effects"....

7 am..tried to give him his fluids...he ate lots of chicken dust and i only managed to give him less than 100cc (so will try tonight for the second session)...i gave him some rescue remedy and he managed to settled and he slept....so i figure i'm really tired and i could try to sleep too....

tested at +2.5 94...fed again and he ate everything...licking again after eating...this time he couldn't go into the bathroom cause one can hear they're working on the pipes in the building...and it was loud...so he stayed in the room...

i fell asleep and woke up to find him licking away...+4.5....no test...i brushed him and i have looked to see if he has fleas...he's never had them in his 17 yrs...and neither has Comet in his almost 14 yrs...

so things to rule out...we have 2 new area rugs we had to replace from the flood...i have vacuum them both and i don't think he's ever had a reaction to area rugs....hmmmm

maybe taking him off the aluminum hydroxide is making his phos values to go up and he could be itchy from that...hmmm....so i've started with the AH again as of yesterday....

my detective work continues...

he has settled on the bed (our bed...which has not happened in a long time)....will wake him at his +5.5 to feed so i can be at peace he has food in his tummy...

i will head out for a couple of hrs...i think i need to clear my head....even if he licks constantly while i'm away i know he's had food and at some point he will settle....funny how i sit here on the bed next to him and each time i look to see if he is sleeping...he's got one eye half open...with that I DO NOT TRUST YOU look....

he has lost weight...i will monitor him the rest of the weekend and probably take him in on Tuesday...Monday i have dr apts myself...getting stitches removed and going to see the hand surgeon...

will report later....

please continue to pray for us...the support here is amazing...don't forget us...even though i am way too tired to post in your condos....i am thinking of you all and hoping everything is well....

Claudia - great AMBG for Rocket.

Reading up on the following combined symptoms: restlesness, shivering, licking, seeking out cool areas - all come back for hyperthyroid for cats. And in 30% of cases results come back normal. "How Cat Hyperthyroidism Is Diagnosed

Measuring the circulating hormone levels is not enough when diagnosing cat hyperthyroidism. Planar thyroid scintigraphy, also known as thyroid imaging, is a far more accurate way of determining whether your cat suffers from this endocrin disease. Hyperfunctional thyroid tissue can be easily detected when using this procedure."

There is also a variation of hyperthyroidism called apathetic hyperthyroidism "http://www.vetinfo.com/feline-hyperthyroidism-treatment.html" where
Clinical Signs and Symptoms

This cat thyroid disease is characterized by such symptoms as:

* Weight loss
* Hyperactivity
* Increased appetite
* Increased water consumption
* Frequent urination
* Intermitent vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Increased heart rate
* Arrhythmia
* Congestive heart failure
* Enlarged cat thyroid gland

A variation of common hyperthyroidism, which is present in around 10 percent of the cats, is called apathetic hyperthyroidism. This type of endocrin disorder has a few characteristics. For example, hyperactivity and increased appetite are replaced by lack of appetite and depression. More than that, the cats that suffer from this variation of the disease will lose weight more rapidly.

The first signs of something wrong was hanging over the water bowl and at the sink, with increased urination right?

Maybe he is just learning to run to the bathtub because his experience is that if he runs there, you come and get him? My civie runs up on top of the fridge whenever I come home, because we have a routine now that he jumps up there and I come and pet him. He trained me.

The same civie (Teddy) has a lot of licking and skin crawling behaviors. Two things help him - gentle brushing or combing calms him down, and playing lets him burn off the jitters. I don't know if Rocket is up to playing, but how does he feel about grooming? It also might help if you two had a positive interaction that he did not associate with poking.

We are all keeping you in our hearts. I agree w/ Linda, sometimes we have to stop worrying about the treatment and just stop to spend time with them. It will be good for you too.

thank you all for your well wishes...i've tried to sleep off and on today...finding myself even more tired...

he ate well in the am...right now he's turned his nose on food (which is part of CRF as they don't eat on queu)

will try shortly...

Marjorie, i will print out all the stuff for when i take Rocket in next week as i really want him to get checked for hyperthyroid....

Karrie, my detective work continues

Linda, i brush him daily...this is a new behaviour which is hard to explain...but is similar to those kitties on youtube i mentioned...but i'm not sure if that's what it is...hyperesthesia...i'm more inclined to think that since he was off his binder for over a week with a phos of 5.26 and his food being high in phos...this maybe the culprit for the itchiness he feels....i don't know....

no insulin given today....

thank you all for your well wishes...means a lot to me...my endless gratitude to you all....

will keep you posted...

Claudia...I am glad he ate well for you today. The tub behavior is curious but maybe there's something he likes about the texture of it...cool and smooth although you would think he'd be cold and be wanting some place warm. I'm glad you've been able to get a little rest. Perhaps tonight you can both sleep a little more. I have no idea about the licking....that really is very curious. Let us know if there is anything any of us can do here other than support. Keeping you both in our prayers.
