I know it's not Caturday yet, but it's been a long time since Maui had a condo here. I don't know who's condo we're squatting in, but oh well here goes.

First - Maui is doing great! Still in remission, still diet controlled, looking good and back to feeling good (will explain).

This week, Maui had her second dental is just under one year. Why? Well I knew she needed one last year and in March 2010 we went to the board certified dentist, where she had two resportive teeth removed.

In November, after taking civvie Buster in for an emergency dental (her canine resorbed and cracked in her mouth, leaving it intact in the gum and sitting sideways), I brought Maui in for her "6 month" "free" re-check, when Buster returned for her re-check after the dental. The dentist observed that Maui had another resportive tooth that needed removing.

So our appt was scheduled for February and I get a call on Saturday, that there was a cancellation, would I like to bring Maui in now. Sure why not, what's one month anyway.

Maui had two teeth resorptive teeth and both had to come out. Her tartar buildup on remaining teeth, wasn't too bad - thanks to our teeth brushing sessions!

So, Maui's mouth is healing and soon she will only have her front teeth left. Maui is also super sensitive to all the drugs (anesthesia, etc) and while we discussed her sensitivities from the last dental, the dentist changed up the drug combo and it still took her a few days to get back to normal.

Her recent bloodwork came back all good and the BG in the test was 107. Which is fine given it was done at the vet's office. In all honesty, I haven't tested her bg in quite some time, but with her normal behaviors, plush, beautiful coat, I know she's looking and feeling good.

So thanks for letting us squat tonight.

It's wonderful to hear that Maui is doing well. Gabby has similar issues with FORLs. It sounds like your dentist is good about considering the meds.

Hi! It is so good to have a Maui condo, and even better that things are still good for her. She sounds like Mannie, in the need for such frequent dentals. I am glad that the troops there came out on top of it all. My hat goes off to you for the teeth brushing. I am afraid Mannie would remove an appendage should I even attempt it. Very nice to have you squat in someone's condo. Mannie is willing to let you use his....

What dentist do you use, Hillary? They sound like they are good.
I'm glad Maui is doing so well. Keep up the good work cat_pet_icon

Thanks everyone. When it comes to brushing teeth, I am literally sitting on all three cats to do. Each one has a different colored brush and they know when it's time. I pick them up one at a time, hold them on the sofa and lay on top to keep them from squirming and getting away. Yes, even Miss Maui, whom I can do anything to... lol

Dyana - I'm using the dentist at Red Bank Vet Hospital. Dr. Iglesias-Scott.

http://www.rbvh.net/services/dentistry/scott.html

She's been there a long time, is studying at U of P to get her board certification and apprenticed under the board cert dentist, who was at Red Bank, left this summer and moved to MD near WCF & Meowzi (she went to him).

She is wonderful, caring, gentle, spends the time - very different from the dentist who left. Since dental two was unexpected and I wouldn't actually meet with her, we talked on the phone before I took her in about what happened before, my concerns and what if anything could be done differently to help her come out and recover faster.

And when Buster had her emergency, I saw it Tuesday night. I left several messages and her assistant called the next day. (After having done two of my cats already, she knew I wouldn't be calling if it wasn't important) As luck had it, she had a cancellation and got Buster in the next day. She said even if there wasn't a cancellation, she considered a hanging canine an emergency and would have scheduled her as one anyway.

Mmmm, do you have a cushion between you and the cat whilst brushing?
Seriously.
Pictures/diagrams encouraged. ;)

I'm so happy to hear Maui is doing fantastic. :D Velcro needs a dental but I'm too scaredz. eep!

nope - picture this - cat on sofa on top of pillow or blanket, bean on top of cat, one hand holding brush, other hand opening mouth....

I know it's scary to take them in. What I learned, is you need to find a dentist that you have confidence in. Once you do that, the rest is easier.

I thought so. That's is well recommeded hospital. I just wish it was closer (but it is within reach). When J.D. had to be hospitalized, I was given the choice of driving to Titon Falls or Philadelphia, and Philadelphia was just a little closer to me.
I see they have a new branch now in Hillsborough (that's real close to the ER I go to, within 25 minutes drive). I often wonder if I should get a second opinion on J.D.'s teeth. I don't know if my vet is just scared to do another dental on J.D, or J.D.'s teeth are fine. I use Dental Cleanse Pads once in awhile.
Thanks for the info. I'm glad you found a dentist you like and trust.

Dyana,

My suggestion, for approx. $120 you can take him there for a consult. It will allow you to assess the place, talk with the dentist, have her exam him and give an opinion. Then you can decide if you want to do it or not.

The nice change she made, is that you can now drop the animal off the night before and they will overnight for free. Since they are a 24/7 place, there will be a tech with him all night and they will monitor, test, whatever you need.

Then you can schedule your pick up for the next day/evening - they seem to start discharging after 4 pm (depending on when the animal was done).

For me, it works out well, take in after work. pick up next day after work and I don't have to fast them, as they will do that. And yes, I packed her overnight bag with food/treats, Maui's favorite brush and for civvie Sydney - her inhalers. the techs handled the inhaler for Syd. - I labeled everything and it worked out fine.

I'm a solid 30 minutes from there.

I wish we had a real cat dentist up here! Rusty will probably need a dental this spring and I'm not too sanguine about taking him to our vet for that. Have considered having it done in NYC or Katonah (GREAT vet hospital), but I don't want Rusty to associate our trips to the city with visits to vets--and especially not dentists!!
Glad to hear that Maui the Magnificent is doing so well.

Hi Hillary!

It's so nice to hear such a good report on Maui. Happy and healthy is always a good thing and still in remission that's icing on the cake. cat_pet_icon Glad she's back to feeling well after her dental. Hope you are doing well too. It is always nice to hear from you and Maui.

Hi Hillary and Maui! Glad to see that you dropped in...missed your condo Friday and Saturday...Just getting ready to go to bed and thought I'd drop in and see how the kitties are doing, and was really happy to see your condo.
I'm so glad that Maui is doing so well. You are doing something good!!! Drop in again sometime soon!

Hi, Hillary! So great to get this wonderful (and visually amusing) report. It does my heart good to see Maui stay OTJ all this time.

Please tell your wonderful vet that she would have absolutely NO competition should she choose to move to Nashville. She could mop up here! :-D

I hope the WBR is as good as the WCR.
