1/18 Blaze follow up

Hello everyone, hope you’re all having a good Monday! Just wants to post about Blaze’s bloodwork. The vet called and said there wasn’t anything too concerning on the bloodwork. She said his pancreas values were slightly elevated so it might have been a mild case of pancreatitis but since he seems to be doing better, she doesn’t want to do anything at this point. Seems like antinausea meds and subq fluids helped. She said she wouldn’t want to do do steroids since he’s diabetic but there is a medication she can try if he continues to have pancreatitis flare ups and if he doesn’t gain a little bit of weight back. She also said she wants to watch his thyroid levels because it was at 2.5 and she likes it to be at 1-2. Other than that, she thinks stress could have played a role in all this too (we did get a puppy a month ago). She advised me to change his diet to something that has less ingredients, he currently eats fancy feast classic pate and Friskies. Any suggestions for food with minimal ingredients that is low carb?

She also said there was no signs of glucose in his urine.

At this point, she would like to see him gain a little weight back and monitor him without doing anything else. He is definitely feeling better, eating normal and acting normal so I’m relived!

aww yay! Did she give you some meds to keep on hand at home? I have zero experience with pancreatitis but see it recommended a lot on the board to have meds (anti nausea, pain, perhaps others? I'm out of my league here) at home for flare ups.

FWIW, I switched Jax from Fancy Feast Pates to Wellness Complete Health Chicken or Turkey pates - I'm not the most knowledgeable in pet food and only switched because my civvie would eat it (my civvie was not a fan of any FF). Weruva also has some low carb pates if that's what your kitties like too (my picky civvie won't eat their pates :p). The other thing I liked about Wellness is they post their nutritional info on their website - hurray!

Yes! So happy it’s nothing major and he’s back to normal. She didn’t give me any meds for at home if he has a flare up again, I guess if he has another flare up. I’ll have to take him back in:arghh:

and thank you for the food recommendations! Luckily, all three of my kitties will eat anything! The wellness sounds like a good one to switch to.

Here is your first post about higher numbershttps://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...ossibly-out-of-remission.241542/#post-2720877

I am so glad to see those BGs back in green again. You must be relieved.
I used to feed Sheba Weruva foods and liked them but I mostly fed her a home made diet.

I wouldn’t be surprised if stress played a part. Sheba got pancreatitis on one occasion when I had to go into hospital for a week.

Great news he is back on green. I can't help with the food, perhaps ask the question on the thread title for more help with that.

has she given you a copy?
I remember my vet said something similar, and Marje suggested I get a copy that often vets don't comment on values that are slightly off, and they won't medicate based on those, as it turned I got the results, and George's kidney markers were a little off, so I started preventive management early.

Which Pancreas values was she talking about?

I’m so relieved! And thank you Bron, I’ve tried Weruva and Blaze liked it so I’ll pick some of that up too. Of course I just bought a ton of FF and Friskie’s paté before the vet visit:confused: I’ll have to try to get my civvies to eat that, I use auto feeders so it’s hard because they usually eat before I get up in the morning and before I get home from work.

I think the stress of having a puppy around definitely didn’t help. At least now I know the signs if he has another pancreatitis flare up. I wish the vet would have gave me meds to take home so we’re prepared next time.

She didn’t give me a copy, she called and discussed the bloodwork over the phone but I’m taking our puppy in on Friday for his last round of shots so I’ll ask for a copy then. She didn’t give me a ton of information, just that she didn’t think he needed meds yet and to try switching foods with less ingredients. Once I get a copy of the bloodwork, I will post and see if you guys can decipher anything.
