With Musette's history of DKA, I just didn't feel like we could maintain these higher numbers so I upped her dose to 1.25u and we will see how she does on that. The last 3 days she has just spent too much time in the 2-300s for my comfort. Hopefully the increase will give us better numbers.

She must be listening because we are on our way down...Back to the yellow at +2.

Lets hope she can settle into this dose increase in good numbers. She just so clearly doesn't feel good when she is up as high as she has been the last few days. At least I have eliminated the variable of food, since she is now strictly on Friskies Turkey and Giblets as that is the only flavor that both she and Maxwell will both eat on a consistant basis. And since Maxwell, Lady Jane Grey and her all share the same dish (they have their own, but food is always better in someone else's bowl) I had to find one that they all liked.

Later today she is going to get to do a little traveling with Momma...My older sister is in town from California and is staying with our mother. So since neither my sister nor my mom have gotten to meet Ms. Musette and my mom is wheelchair bond, Mz. Musette and I are going for a visit. This gives us a good chance to start training her that everytime you go for a ride in a vehicle it doesn't mean either a vet trip or a new home. I try to take all the fur kids for occassional short trips to visit friends and family so they learn that their carriers and a trip in the truck isn't something to be scared of, but a chance for a little one on one time with mom and a new grand adventure.

Mel,

Just a bird's eye look at her spreadsheet since June makes me ask "have you considered changing insulins?"

You are certainly testing enough and staying on top of her, but the goal is regulation. And, I'm just thinking that this insulin is not the best for her.

Would you consider the BCP PZI? The vet can order a freebie and you can give it a try. It would probably cover her for a month. Then you could make a decision.

Levemir is another option.

Just my two cents.

Yep I've been thinking that Lantus just isn't gonna work for her. But I haven't quite figured out which insulin to switch her to...I can see pros and cons of working with either PZI or Levermir...With her erratic preshot numbers and the flexiblity that PZI offers that could be the answer or the fact that she just takes off after her nadir then Levermir also might be the answer. I do have a couple partly used pens of Levermir here, that I could try her on as that is the same insulin my mother uses.

The biggest question comes down to what I can get my vet to switch her to, should I decide which way I want to jump, I guess the only real way to know is to get her into my vet and ask which they would prescribe for her...anything but NPH has to work better than what we have going on here. As I think I have just about exhausted every trick I can think of to get her regulated with Lantus...It just seems like things work for her for awhile and then we start creeping up again, just nothing seems to hold her in normal numbers.

Other than her numbers she has no real clinical signs, eats and drinks normal, pees normal, poops normal, purrs, preens, plays and she is even gaining weight. But she needs better numbers.
