We are having a day of mixed emotions here right now. Trix is feeling pretty darned good, and we're all happy about that (anti-jinx and a half). Her appy is happy, I got awesome computer-time snuggles, and she has that impish spunky look in her eye.

She's only had one dose so far, but fortunately the amoxicillin doesn't seem to be bothering her belly.

But, it's one of "those" gelcap mornings. Her first one - the one with the BP meds and Pepcid - went down just fine. But I still have to AB gelcaps to go, and she wants nothing to do with them....hissing, swatting, growling. I can't say I blame her. I'm not a happy camper, either, Trix.

I just got off the phone with the vet, though, and she is calling in a sugar-free compounded liquid for me. I might be able to get it at a local pharmacy, which means I'll be able to get it for this evening; otherwise, it will be coming in tomorrow.

Honestly, since Trix is feeling so good and the sugar-free meds are on the way, I'm not going to go TOO crazy if I can't get this thing down her throat this morning. I can't let her get so upset with me that she won't let me pill her at all. 6 gelcap pillings per day for at least 30 days is just way too much. I wish we didn't have to go the liquid route, but that will work better.

@Chris - From yesterday's condo: The vet said that this AB does come in an injectible, but that it would be too cost-prohibitive....something about the vial only lasting 48 hours once it is started???

ETA....nope, so far it still ain't happening. I know the new meds will be here shortly, but this is still so stressful.

I think you are smart not to over stress little Trixie right now, especially since she is feeling so well. Simon is pretty good with the gel caps, but I can't imagine him liking 6 sessions a day with them. Hopefully, the injectable will help and you and Trixie will be able to be less stressed. Hope you have a wonderful day.
 
I don't think anyone of us like to pill/liquid our kitties. On the other hand, it's a necessary evil in order for us to help our babies get better. You've definitely got everyone's support on here, including mine. If she gets treats, would it be possible to chase the bad with a dose of good? She may equate the meds to getting a reward afterwards. It's a thought. I also hope you have a wonderful day, too. At least it's Friday. :D :bighug:
 
Trix is usually pretty good about the gelcaps, too, but I think she's reached her limit. I'm afraid of pushing her to the point where I won't be able to pill her with her PB meds.

We'll be getting the oral liquid. I wish we could do the injectible, but it's too expensive.

Oddly, she's not a huge treat fan anymore....developed an aversion last spring when she was sick. And I have her cranberry treats coming in the mail tomorrow - I don't know if she'll go for them or not, but I'm hoping she will, and I don't want her to associate them with pilling fiascos.
 
I give up. It's not happening. I've been trying for an hour to get just half of that damn pill down her, and it's not happening. I'm very stressed and upset and frustrated and dizzy from the anxieyt, even though I know the liquid is on the way. I pray I haven't messed her up for pilling her other pills. I hate this.

She feels good...she'll be OK till the liquids come....

I am sorry for all the gelcap stuff. Thjat has to be hard. 6 a day... we were up to needing 3 med apps a day with Mannie, and even that was stressful. I can't imagine 6. I wish strength and calming vines for you. I don't think missing this one will upset the apple cart. I really don't. I went through that too with Mannie, where it just wasn't happening, or he'd cheek it and I'd find the darn thing 30 minutes later, or he just plain threw it up. darn cats! It never really affected the overall picture for him. I am sure it will be the same for Trixie. I so understand your stress and frustrations. For this morning, just walk away from it, resume tonight. Trixie will be better for it if you do. They know when we are upset, it carries over to them. Don't worry, she will be fine.

Feel good Trixie! and maybe dish out a few extra cuddles for mama. She could use a few, and to know all is OK with you.

Have a better day Amy. I hope it all goes well.
 
Bummer on the gelcap fiasco. :arghh: I would just cross it off and wait for the liquid. How much difference is a day going to make, anyway?

:bighug: I remember how stressful it was giving Tiffany all those gel caps plus syringe feeding. Thirty days can't come soon enough. I hope she accepts the liquid. I've never been able to give liquids except to the bathroom mirrors. I thought of you this morning when Max rejected his gel cap.

I'm considerably calmer now....the compounded liquid has been called in to the local pharmacy so we will have it for tonight's dose.

It was hard for me to "walk away" from this morning's dose...I am so programmed from TR that it was really bothering me that I couldn't get those pills into her. But knew continuing to push it would be a bad idea. I just hope I can get her evening gelcap in tonight. By then, I'm sure she'll be fine. Will I, though :rolleyes:? Hopefully.

Had an interesting chat with the vet about which flavor to pick for the med. She recommended NOT picking something Trix likes, because it can create aversions. I actually decided to go with banana, even though could have picked a meat flavor. Vetty said that the fruit flavors don't add any sugar to the meds, and that cats really don't have "sweet receptors", so all the fruit flavor does is take the bitterness out of the med. So I thought banana might be more innocuous than, say, beef (which Trix does not like). I thought beef had the potential to be REALLY gross, and therefore might create an even worse scenario. Hopefully I picked right!

It's been a while, but we have given Trix liquid meds in the past, and she did do OK with it. I was hoping the pill would fit in her gelcap, but it won't and she has made it clear that 6 gelcaps per day is unacceptable.

She was feeling pretty great when I left...she ate quite a bit on her own - no assist feeding necessary. I'm giving her a break from my helicoptering today....I'm not going to go home and check on her.

We also extended her other AB, the Zeninquin, for another 8 days. Since it does seem to be working on something somewhat unknown, given her abrupt improvement since starting it, we want to make sure we don't discontinue it too soon and cause a backslide.

With that....time to get to work....
 
Thanks for tin e info, Ann - good reading for tonight after work! I really hope Trixie goes for the treats...she's gotten funny about treats since last year's p-titis.....

My vet says that the cranberry is "controversial" in the world of vetty's, but she felt she has had success with it, so she does recommend giving it a whirl. Anything we can do to erradicate this enterococcus will make me happy....it doesn't seem to be bothering Trix in that she is not displaying urinary symptoms that I can tell, but who knows what she is hiding, and who knows what other issues it could be causing. And the fact that it is so AB-resistant is a little unnerving. But Trix likes to tackle a good challenge every now and then!
 
Ugh on the gelcap disaster this morning. So glad you got the essentials down first. Great news on getting the liquid version tonight!

Last week I was giving Neko 5 liquids a day. 2 ABs, 2 bupe, and one Hyaflex. She's such a good kitty about all that but I was glad to be done with the ABs because the volume of it was so large. I've given Neko both flavored and unflavored bupe. I've done "chicken soup" flavor (compounded in water) and "roast chicken" (compounded in oil). The "chicken soup" gets all 4 paws up. Roast chicken is "OK". Plain was "yuck get that away from me." I much prefer giving the flavored bupe - Neko is so much more cooperative and doesn't try turning her head. In some ways the "roast chicken" is better because she's not trying to suck the syringe while I'm trying to place it in her cheek pouch.
 
I'm glad Trixie was feeling so good this morning. I'm sorry you had such trouble with the gel cap. I'm glad you are able to get the liquid meds this evening.
 
I think you made the right choice giving the extra gel caps a miss this morning. Paws crossed for the banana liquid - if she realises it's that or a couple of gel caps she'll love it!
 
So far I have had horrendous issues with the gelcap tonight...hissing from the get-go. Trying my damndest to swallow my stress.....I feel like we have lost so much forward progress today.

BTW, she's feeling pretty good, I think.
 
Phew...it's down. That was her benazpril, pepcid, and Zenniquin. MamaBean Meltdown #2 of the basically averted, although I was on the edge. Up next: fluids and banana-flavored amoxicillin. Yay Team Trixie.
 
Give yourself a break Amy! You do such a great job with Trixie getting all those pills down her the majority of the time.

I doubt if any of us could do better! (and most of us would be bald from tearing our hair out)

Hope the banana flavored AB turns out to be acceptable to Miss Trixie!
 
Believe me, I just about am bald! She's such a good patient, but the overload of gelcaps with that AB was her limit. I told her that tonight's benazepril gelcap was the only one....hopefully she believes me. Can't wait to see what she thinks of her new banana juice!

Baby steps....kitten steps....and a big old glass of wine coming up shortly!!!

Like the other's have said, you are doing an AWESOME job- just take it one step at a time-sending tons and tons of gel-capping vines, and just praying she likes the banana flavored amoxicillin, so glad you were able to get it compounded! Good job, you're a pro! :bighug::bighug:
 
Banana meds are down...we definitely need to work on that technique. I know we'll get into a routine but for now my head feels like it's going to explode...

Forget the glass of wine...Go for the whole jug!! You deserve it!

:woot::woot::woot:...that looks AWESOME, Chris! Heck, with that screw cap I don't even need the mental capacity to work a corkscrew. I like it :smuggrin:!! She wore part of those banana meds, so we've got to get smoother about it. I'm guessing we'll get the technique down just right on the last day of these meds :rolleyes:!
 
Amy, you are one (insert one-not-suitable-for-sensitive-readers adjective here) amazing bean. Remember breathe. Tip a toast to Trixie, to you, to each of your civies, your DH, and by then you should be relaxed. A bit. If not, as we say in LL. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Hi Amy and Trixie!! It sounds like you have your hands full at the moment, but you're doing a wonderful job as always. You definitely deserve that massive jug of wine! :bighug:

I hope you can unwind, do some meditation, have some wine, and kick the stress for today. You've had a really hard day and I know it really upsets you when you can't get the meds in her. You're doing the very best you can.

I hope tomorrow will be much better and Trix will put today behind her. Sending good sleeping vines for you.

One down just 29 more to go. You are doing a fabulous job with Trixie. I know people that have had success with cranberries. I hope Trixie is one more!
