Hello,
I decided I would start posting here, as it is my old stomping ground and Boots is going through
some changes that are effecting her BG's. Also since she's getting dental work soon, it might effect
things. Below I pasted what's been happening. I was posting in the main forum: the newest first.

Good Morning,
I stopped the Zyrtec (antihistamine) for Boots itching. It just isn't worth the risk of HB sugars.
5 hrs into the dose, 8 hrs after shot.. she spiked to 151. Not high for some of your Kitties, but Booty hangs around
70/80's. Not only was her BS's high, but it made her really spaced and lifeless.
Yesterday I ran a curve without giving her the Zyrtec. 8 hrs. later BS's were 85 opposed to the 151 the day before.
Last night I start her on raw w/a premix. I'm hoping it solves the skin issue. Probably will run a curve
again because of the food change. Just checked BS's again, another 8 hrs. after shot. 89


Today I gave Boots 5mg. of zyrtec. I think it cause her blood sugar to go up. Tonight it was 151. It hasn't been that in 4yrs.
Her A1c level was that of normal non-diabetic cat in last weeks test results. She stays around 70 and 2hrs before shot is at 90.

Nothing besides the 5mg.'s of Zyrtec is different, but the added supplement Dasuquin. Recently she was diagnosed w/advanced mouth disease which is being taken care of shortly. I know that can cause high BS's., but hasn't so far.

I really wanted to give her some itch relief for dermatitis. Has anyone experienced high BS.'s with zyrtec ? Online I read that some people with
Diabetes 2 have.

This is very upsetting to me, as she normally has had amazing BS's. She has a partial working pancreas and for the last 4 yrs. has only need 1/2 unit of insulin
twice a day. I was actually thinking after the dental work, she might go OTJ

Zyrtec is supposed to be the best antihistamine out there right now for cats. Most of the info. says it won't raise the BS.
But I found some users, not usual, but definitely raised theirs. I think it's worth a try, as if raised all BS. in diabetics,
there would be a better and more warning. I think it's a small percent and Boots might fall under it.

Boots free feeds, so I'm not sure if she ate as dose kicked in. She didn't eat right after getting, but could have as
dose took hold. She was a bit out of it, when I checked the high BS. Because of her behavior, I checked, thinking
she was low. High BS. usually put her in a good mood and lows make her out of it. Might just be her body adjusting
to the drug.

I am starting raw again today, to see if I can clear up the bumps (the reason she's on Zyrtec)

Hello.
I don't know about Zyrtec and cats but I thought I'd come by and say Hi.
Boots seems to have cycles much like Shadow ... nice and flat.....
hope you figure out what's causing those spikes...

My kitty went through a bout of allergies about a year ago. Here's what my vet recommended (including Zyrtec as an option):

There are several options—there is a product called Allerderm which is applied once weekly to the skin which can be quite helpful for itchy or dry skin. Additional fish oil omega-3 fatty acids, 200-250 mg daily, are often helpful, but may take up to 2 weeks to really have an effect. Antihistamines are often helpful—we seem to have the best success with Zyrtec, which is over-the-counter, or hydroxyzine which is a prescription medication.

We have Allerderm here, but you may be able to order it online. Zyrtec dosage is ½ of a 10 mg tablet by mouth (in food…) twice daily, or about every 12 hours, try for 7 days. Watch for drowsiness or restlessness, although side effects from Zyrtec are not likely or are very mild. Use plain Zyrtec, or cetirizine, only—no combo meds. The fish oil product we use is AllerG3, or you can use human products.

Gabby did well with Omega-3. She didn't like the AllerG3. However, if Boots is sensitive to fish, this may not be a good option.

Are you using brand name Zyrtec or are you using a generic? If it's a generic, there may be something in the compounding materials that Boots is responding to.

How old is your insulin? Inconsistent numbers can result from old or toasty Lantus.

Very informative Sienne..thank you. The vet recommended 5mg. once a day. Her BS spiked on that and she was really out of it. It is generic.
Insulin is less than a month old. She loves salmon, but is weird about oil supplements. I'm hoping the raw diet helps. I fed her raw
for about a year. I don't recall her having a rash, so I'm hoping the diet change helps. I'll check out the fish oil you used as well. Maybe
she will like that one.
