Sid saw the specialist on Monday. The ultrasound did not reveal any masses but he has abnormal kidneys and a very abnormal pancreas. So even though his spec fpl was normal, the specialist is guessing he has pancreatitis along with a kidney infection that will likely take 4-6 weeks to resolve. They also did a folate/cobalamin test at U of Texas. Sid is deficient in b-12 and is now getting a supplement. He is also deficient in potassium so is getting a supplement for that too. All in all, he is getting 2 AB/day (baytril and clavamox), potassium supplement (oral and subQ), weekly b-12 injection, buprenex (for pain - my request), and at least 75 ml of subQ. However, his glucose levels on lantus were dropping so radically every day and then spiking so high, that the specialist recommended he be switched temporarily to another faster/shorter acting insulin (Humulin N or PZI) until his other issues can get resolved. The specialist said the lantus was too potent for him. With much resistance I finally had to switch his insulin and the levels are not quite so drastic now. So I will have to post on a different board until we are back on lantus. He is not eating very well though and I have to syringe feed him. Overall is doing very poorly so keep him in your thoughts!

Hi Lydia and Sid,
I hope that you can get Sid settled into his various meds and supplements and the new insulin. Which insulin are you now using? We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers and even visit your other condo(!), but remember that LL is your home and if you have time, it would be great if you could keep us up to date on how Sid is doing.

Wishing you much success in getting Sid's issues straightened out.

Thank you for your kind words! I feel that LL is our home too. I really resisted changing. I told the vet I would try the other insulin (Humulin N) to see how he does because just even a very small amount of lantus was making him go so low. Just so you all know, the specialist said that he usually recommends lantus but he felt it was not right for Sid at this time. I just hope that Sid gets better and I will try anything to make that happen.
 
I have been looking for a Sid condo. It sounds like these are treatable issues so that's a good thing.

You know you are welcome to post here. If you are posting in a different ISG, please post a link here so we can keep an eye on you and Sid. I know I want to hear how he's doing. Once a member of LL, always a member. You are family.
 
All of this does sound promising for sweet Sid. Yes, please do keep us updated on his progress...you'll always be in our thoughts and prayers!

Thank you! I felt the same way - a little relief that Sid's issues appear to be treatable, but I'm still really worried because he is just not acting like he feels good (I know he doesn't) and he isn't eating. You would think that something would be kicking in and he would be doing at least a little better. The vet has been very nice and letting me bring him in before their office opens and then letting him stay there every day while I'm at work (it is about $20/day but worth it because they check his glucose level regularly using my glucometer). Today he dropped to 55 which isn't that low but they syringe fed him. If he had been at home alone, who knows what would have happened. There is one day that he stayed home this week. He was pretty high when I left for work and I thought he would be ok, but I believe he dropped pretty low because when I came home at lunch, he was over 500. Right now he is acting really lethargic and I hope it is from the buprernex (he is on a low dose). I just give him lots of hugs and tell him to get better!!
 
Lydia...you are amazing and I know Sid feels your love and all you are doing for him. Sending him many, many more prayers and healing vines.

The booties are to help retain heat so not just for dentals for anything requiring anaesthetic. Although for something other than dentals sterilisation my become an issue if you're providing your own booties.
