Good Afternoon LL!

Yesterday Muffin ate very little, even with my offerings of turkey and rotisserie chicken. I gave her pepcid on 1/10, after talking with the vet, and, while she did a little that evening, it didn't seem to make much difference. I've been trying since then to get her to eat on her own, without using pepcid or cypro. Although the vet had recommended giving cypro for a few days, I was wary of doing that because I didn't know if her stomach was upset or not. Plus, if something IS wrong, I didn't want to throw that in the mix or to mask symptoms. So he recommended bringing her in for full BW panel and a spec fpli.

The main reason I'm posting, however, is this. When I was talking to the vet getting Muffin's thryoid results, I happened to mention that 3-4 times over the past week I had noticed what could have been her losing her balance. It only happened when she was walking around the keyboard on the desk, so slow, tight turns. And it was so very slight, that I almost wasn't sure it was happening. He suggested checking her anal glands, because sometimes impacted glands can make them a little wobbly in the hind quarters. So today when she went in, he checked her anal glands, and sure enough, one of them was impacted, swollen and sore. She screamed from the back room when he expressed it (poor little thing). He said this is not nearly as common in cats as it is in dogs, and I don't think any of my cats have EVER been checked for this, so it does not seem to be a regular part of a kitty check up, like it is a dog check up.

Since we've gotten home, Muffin is obviously feeling better, she's eating much better, she's exploring the house, attacking the drooler...not really playing yet, but she's my little sidekick again, instead of being in her own room in her bed like she's been the majority of the last couple days. So while this may not be the only thing going on with her, it does seem to have played a major role in making her feel a little off.

So I just wanted to mention it - have kitty's anal glands checked from time to time.

Will post tomorrow with bw results and then again whenever the fpli results come back.

Oh, and the other thing is - mention EVERYTHING to your vet, even if it's something you're not quite sure you're even seeing!

Wow I never knew that about cats and anal glands causing symptoms like that. Wow. Must have been hard for you to hear her upset. No way could they check Mavericks if he was awake. He would go Freddy Kruger on them. Glad to hear she's acting so well after a stressful vet visit (and her booty is feeling better).

Hi, thinking of you both! Baby is nearly 10 years old (2 months shy) since her Diabetes diagnosis last year & her transition to Raw Diet.. she has went in for 2 impacted anal glands.. her symptoms were apparent though.. swollen, red & obvious.. the vet also agreed.. not seen in cats too much.. anyway..we went in.. vet popped it & sent home with instructions how to do it myself (if I felt comfortable) and a round of antibiotics. Thank goodness this is all that was wrong with Muffin in regards to loss of balance.. could have been way more serious.

Oh my goodness, Anne...my heart was in my throat reading your post...and, sorry, Muffin...but THANK GOODNESS!!!

a member who had been absent posted earlier that they had to step away from the emotional roller coaster they experienced from bonding with/getting involved with so many kitties and folks on the forum...and while i'm not going anywhere...i surely understood what they meant...we form such deep attachments here, that we experience the ups, downs, sorrow and joy together.

No joy for little muffin girl in that back room...but sheer relief to know that was the cause!

I had my vet check J.D.'s just for the hay of it on Monday, during his regular check up. All is good. The only reason I did, is because the last time we were at the vet, I heard these awful screams coming from the exam room before it was our turn, and I wondered what J.D. must have thought at that time. I asked the vet and he said the cat before us had impacted anal glands.

I'm glad Muffin is feeling better and eating better, now. Just think what it must feel like, to have like boils or hard swellings like that back there. No wonder she felt off. cat_pet_icon

Also, just so you know.. it is pure kitty drama with the noise  my vet did not take Baby Cakes in any back room.. did it right there..of course it is a violation of their private areas.. but it was not so tragic.. easy for me to say, eh?

Hi Anne - interesting, and thanks for the info. I had a cat many years ago that was prone to this too. And so agreed on mentioning everything.

I am glad that Muffin is feeling better. YAY!

Muffin???? You went to the vetty place? You OK now? Should we bring you some chicken soup, or the KTSS spa treatment? Will they let us in at the falls???? WE miss you! ~~ Mannie

I didn't know about symptoms either, and would never have thought to ask specifically about anal glands. That's why I wanted to let you all know. She's back in her bed in her room, now, so this may not be the only thing going on, but it obviously made a difference. Will post with the lab results when I get them.

I know what you mean Celi, about getting so attached to everyone here - furry and fur-less, and experiencing everyone's highs and lows. But that's part of what makes this place so wonderful. I know I can come here with bad news OR good news and you all will share my feelings, just as I share all of yours.

Love this LL family!

I take a gud bath when I gets home, but da Shnookie still say I smell funny, and you guys is ALWAYS welcome here at da Falls! I'd lubs a bisit if you nots too busy habin' fun! - Lubs, Muffin

Hi Anne & Muffin, Good news that one mystery has been solved, thanks to your excellent observation and timely action, Anne. Muffin, we're very glad that you're feeling better tonight. Ni ni!

Hi Anne & Muffin,

I'm so glad your vet was able to help Muffin. It is strange that you said to mention everything to the vet. I have noticed in the last couple days that Whiskers front legs seem to tremble ever so slightly. I wondered if I even saw it (but I have). I'll mention it to the vet. Thanks cat_pet_icon .
