Not gonna lie even for a second.... I don't nap. If I try to, it doesn't turn into a nap, I need like 3-4 hours sleep. I'd rather stay up.

Ok, testing now for real. Pray he's not low. I gotta job and important meeting in am. Will do what we have to do, but Ozzy please be nice to your meowmy!! Paws crossed!

can you delay it by 20 minutes? I just want to be sure he really is going up, or at least surfing.
 
Oh..and interesting thing is happening...he's headed to the kitchen on his own. Wonder if it's because he's hungry, he's getting used to his timed feedings and knows it's almost time, or he feels low and it's making him hungry. I'm going to wait for his timed feed...it's only 6 mins away now and I'm trying to train him on his autofeeder (that he is still terrified of!)
 
Okay. That feeding will be how long after your last test? If it's 15 minutes or longer, grab a test real quick before the food has time to take effect (you can let him eat - it takes 15-20 for it to affect BG).

So hold off on food and don't test now and then wait to feed him in 20 mins and then test again when? 30 mins after? So 50 total mins from now for both? Don't know that I can make it that long unless it's a true emergency. I'm not a bad kitty mama...but I need to pay the bills around here. :(

Okay. Hope he went and ate on his own. As soon as he's done, test him. That food won't affect his BG for 15-20 minutes, so this will be a good test 30 min or so after last food, right? If he's the same or higher, go to bed! But let me know, first, please, so I can, too! ;)

BTW, when does the feeder turn again?
 
OMG...my kitty is a spoiled scaredy cat. He's still terrified of the feeder if he sees/hears it rotate so he's refusing to eat from it right now. Not sure if he is also not a fan of the mixed in raw. Figgie LOVES raw and looks like he wants to kill something on his own.

I had to pull the food from the feeder and put it in a separate bowl with a little tuna next to it to convince Ozzy to eat. He's trying my patience tonight. Never thought I would have to trick my fat cat to eat. Will test again soon. PLEASE GO UP OZZY. Momma has to sleep and work !!

ok, will test him right after he is done. Feeder is set again for 4 am, so 4 hours from now. 3 from breakfast. Is that ok? I can leave out extras if needed.
 
The 95 test was at 11:45 pm and the 85 test was at 12:24 a. So about 40 mins apart. He ate at 12am but slowly because I had to convince him (scared of feeder etc) not because he was not interested in his food.

Typically, you don't want to feed that late in the cycle unless you're down to a really small dose and nearing OTJ, because the effects of the Lantus are already waning and you just push the BG higher.

I give him a small snack (around .5 oz) around 4 am because he tends to come wake me up for food and sometimes he throws up early in the morning. I think he is vomiting because he is anticipating food and he is building up stomach acid thinking he will be fed soon. The 4am snack has helped with the vomiting.

That's why I suggested going and doing all your pre-bed prep now, so you can just hop in when you get the green light (no pun intended). It's a trick I learned a long time ago.

I am actually happy about not steering... I have grown! HAHAH! The last time he dropped into the greens (in the 50s that time) I kind of panicked and started feeding him HC with gravy. I felt like I ruined the cycle even though I actually didn't because it was his first time surfing in blues and greens. The times before, I pulled out the evil crunchy munchies (dry kibble). I promised myself next time to be patient and see what happens. You gave me a lot of great advice tonight and moral support that I really appreciate. Who knows where Ozzy could have gone. We are still new to lantus so I have no idea what to predict on a given dose. You ladies are real pros at this stuff and I am listening to your advice carefully because you guys have been correct 100% of the time. I am so grateful for all the folks here for the wonderful guidance, and especially for you tonight! Thank you!!:bighug::bighug::bighug::):):):kiss:

Seriously, we were all where you are at some point, and someone helped us. We understand because we've been there, done that. I had two FD kitties. I never would have known to watch for the signs in the second cat if I hadn't been through it with the first and gotten such great support here. I am not exaggerating when I say the people here saved Cinco's life. His vet wanted us to euthanize him. But I followed the advice here, instead of hers, and he got better and lived almost another 5 years. I can never repay that, not to mention all the help I got with my two Civvies, Minka and Sasha, and with Harvey, before and after he got FD. This is a family, and we watch out for one another.
 
ok, gonna grab a last (hopefully- anti jinx) test here in about 5 mins or so and will post back.

It seems for sure Ozzy broke his bounce tonight. If you had a crystal ball, what would you predict for his AMPS tomorrow or his AM cycle for tomorrow. I have to work so I won't be able to monitor him, Hubby might be able to check in on him.

My vets office seems ill-informed. From what I have read here, it seems many vet offices are ill-informed. I have a goal to put together an informational package that we ALL can share with our vets. Maybe one day, one cat owner at a time, one vet, one vet office at a time, we can make a change to help kitties and prevent FD. Wouldn't that be a dream?!
 
My Crystal Ball broke a long time ago. Probably because I threw it at the wall.:p

It's hard to say. He didn't really go low enough to bounce, BUT the drop from PMPS to +4 may trigger one. You won't know until you test at PMPS. Any chance of getting a +11.5 test? If so, and you are unsure about anything, post for help. If not, you'll just have to play it by ear. If he doesn't bounce, I'd guess he'll surf yellows or blues. Load the feeder, just in case he gets brave enough to try it.

My kitties were treated at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, the top rated vet school in the country. I was told, by a third year student there, that they got FIVE HOURS of training on diabetes - and that included both cats and dogs, which are totally different in how the disease affects them. In fact, they are still teaching about the Somogyi Effect, which has actually never been proven to exist in cats and is even questioned to exist in humans.

Keep in mind, a vet has to learn about a lot of different diseases and conditions in multiple species, so there's no way, unless they are a specialist, that they can be an expert on any one disease. That's where we come in. If you are lucky, and your vet is open to learning, sharing the info here can benefit other kitties. Unfortunately, a lot of vets think they know much more than any silly pet owner. I've had both experiences. Never stop trying to educate, but be prepared to be disappointed.
 
Yep! 101 at +6! Ozzy pulled through on his own. No steering, no extra food. I just checked his bowl from his last feed and he didn't even eat half his food so it's not like he was scarfing. I think overall tonight = SUCCESS! I gotta go to bed- WAAAY past my bed time. Thank you SO MUCH Tricia for your help tonight. It means the world to me!

Haven't gotten a ketone test on Ozzy since his Big Fat Negative 3 days ago so thought it important that I should try again tonight. I cleaned out his litter box all nice (sometimes they run to go dirty it up right when it's been cleaned) and low and behold- he was interested in getting in. So I stood by with my trusty ketone strip in hand waiting to hear the sound, but nothing....so I pull his tail up and try to stick the strip under there...and darnit...he's already done!! I stood by the whole time and he tricked me by peeing 'quietly'! What the heck! So, I try to get creative and stick the strip in his litter covered pee clump. It looked negative but..well...I know that's not an accurate way to test so I won't write this one down! What a trickster!

Then...wait...he hops back in the box...NOOO, is he going to go AGAIN..and I'm going to get another chance? He starts doing this little dance in his box and is very excited...I'm like, what am I witnessing here???? And then he hunches up...on no..he's not going to pee, he's preparing for a POO! Ok, I have to be honest and admit that I have never seen my kitty take a poo in all the 8 years of his life, so I'm kinda intrigued on who leaves what size ones in the box (him or Figgie). So he drops trou and it looks pretty soft (like soft serve ice cream) and it smells like..well ****...Then it got me wondering, what is normal kitty poo??? Does this sound normal?
