1/10 Leo AMPS 525 +2 457 +5.4 472 PMPS 482 +2 332 +5 439 +8 113

I'm sorry to read about all the vomiting last night, Joni! Do you think it couyld be from the high numbers he's having?
Last summer when we were away, our regular sitter could not come for 3 days, so we had another one for that period. I am not sure what she did (our sitter said she found a full syringe on the counter when she came back), she said she forgot to shoot once, then there was that full syringe left out, so there might have been 2 missed shots. Anyway, Bella was in yellow for the first time in over a year, and she vomited and had diarrhea a lot. I am not sure how it was related, but who knows, they might feel bad while being so high!
I hope he goes down soon now. :bighug:

No appetite is from the high BGs from what I can tell. It took a half day of high BG to set it off. Now back in the cycle that started last month around 12/14/23. :arghh:
There were three times with no eating for 24 hours that made me think I was going to lose him. I lost our Sheltie 2012; found her gone early morning. I heard her in the early morning hours and I just thought Leo was giving her grief. Leo was most two and Trixie was about 14/15.... the two were not best buds, unlike Leo and the Collie. But it was not annoyance, but.... she was gone. :( So I had this feeling three times I would find Leo that way. :(
Then it seemed he turned the corner at first of the year... and then I had TWO morning fur shots 1/4 & 1/6... finally back on track after avoiding a left side shot and then yesterday morning was bonkers sometime after +2.25.
I keep reading about pancreatitis... last time he had labs to see what's going on, they were normal mostly. One of the other vets called to tell me results were normal as the vet who sees Leo wasn't in, but she called the afternoon we were enroute to downtown Fort Worth to go to the hospital where my step-mom was removed from life support. It was not a good time for a phone call and I haven't checked back in. Now that there is more BG history since 12/22, I'm sure it's another level of testing. Does Leo need to go through all this? It saddens me to think of the outcome and at what more pain & suffering? The thought crushes me. Keep him alive so I don't cry and miss him terribly? This might be the 4th time of no eating. I just don't know what I don't know.

I have no idea how to help you, but I'm thinking about both of you :bighug:
It must have been so sad to find your Sheltie like that. I heard a lot that some cats don't want to be around their people when they die, I don't know if that's true. One of my friends found her cat like that too, she had renal insufficiency for a long time, and died during the night.
I hope you can get answers from your vet.

Leo is back to not eating. I've tried the usual tricks that work: nutritional yeast, liver powder, and even a small bite's worth of canned chicken (it's not under 100mg, though).

Is this what I ask the vet to prescribe? mirtazapine and cyproheptidine?
No appetite and he threw up once last night, and it was a big one. Any drawbacks to these medications to be aware? This is the 4th round of not eating. :(

I’m so sorry about Leo being ill again. Have you read this post on pancreatitis?

You should not give an appetite stimulant without controlling the nausea and vomiting so he needs ondansetron and cerenia both for that. Some vets give appetite stimulants without first addressing nausea and I just can’t imagine how that must feel to be nauseous and then have something making you feel like eating. He’s just likely to vomit again.

He needs to be checked for pancreatitis as it sounds like he has the symptoms. In the meantime, will he eat some baby food like Beeches chicken or Turkey with no garlic or onions? Or Grated Parmesan cheese as a topper?

Thanks. I'm contacting the vet who sees him. I never finished the conversation when she called 12/22, when we were enroute to the hospital for my step-mom.... I know she had some concerns, but it was a bad time to talk while we were on the road fighting traffic. It seemed Leo kept turning corners, but here we are again. :(

Going to the store to see if he'll eat any of the baby food. THANK YOU!
I did email the vet and asked for both irtazapine and cyproheptidine. This was before I received your message.

You don’t need them both and I’d be surprised at a vet giving them both. There is a relatively new one out called Mirtaz which can be given daily. But you really need the anti-nausea stuff first.

I hope he feels better ad will eat some baby food.

So Mirtaz for anti-nausea.
I read so many various comments for this, that, and the other. First time to see Mirtaz. Thanks. Going to the store now for the baby food.

Nope. Ondansetron and cerenia for anti-nausea and anti-vomiting. Mirtaz is a new appetite stimulant which can be given daily instead of every three days like mirtazapine is.

Thanks! Are there recommended dosages or forms of the meds?
Cerenia is usually given once per day at about a mg per pound of body weight. It can be safely given at higher doses though (as it is given for motion sickness.) Cerenia is best for vomiting, although does have some mild anti-inflammatory effects in the gut and can help with pancreatitis. Ondansetron can be given at 4 mg per cat up to 3 times per day (every 8 hours) and I have seen it given more frequently, but I’ve never had to give it more than 3 times per day. Ondansetron is best for nausea. Mirataz is rubbed on the inner ear of the cat for an appetite stimulant and can be given once per day but can make cats a little crazy so I always recommend starting with 1/2 (or less) of the length of the strip of ointment and doing it every other day.

Do you test for ketones? When did the vomiting/inappetance/diarrhea begin?

No yet, but just received a KetoMojo I need to figure out how to use. I think it's very similar to the Relion Classic Premiere glucose meter.

Yesterday, he ate well, even with the 500+ BGs that started after AM shot, +4.5, and even after the PM shot through +3.5 (9:33pm), but then he threw up a LOT of food around 10pm, some digested, and some not. He hasn't eaten since. All he'll consume is the tuna-soaked spring water and im a separate bowl, water. It is now close to 9pm.

No luck with the dehydrated chicken, nutritional yeast, or the Beech-Nut chicken & chicken broth baby food.

This is like the last three times since 12/14/23 he's gone on strike with food.... then the next morning he's eating again. But this one is off by 12 hours. He should be going for it soon, if he follows the same pattern.

No diarrhea.

I saw you mention Fort Worth. That’s my hometown….where I was born.

How about that! That's where our other kitty was born, too! Seriously! On Washington Street where our daughter lived with roommates their senior year.... or was it after they graduated? This kitty's name is Andy. Anyway, a irresponsible girl next door let her girl kitty out loose.... threw her out and the kittens born on the girls' porch in a trash can! How long did you live in FW?

Poor baby. If he’s nauseous, he probably won’t eat. He definitely needs to see the vet.

He wasn't even interested in any small tuna pieces when offered. Very unlike him, but he wants the spring water that has tuna soaking in it. He acted a few times after 10pm that he was almost ready to eat, but when various food is offered, but he looks away. He does move from one spot to another to sit there.

Is it difficult to get diagnosed with pancreatitis?

Did you read the post I linked above? It has all the info you need on pancreatitis but they will need to do a specfPL blood test. They can do a snapfPL to get the result back quicker but it’s just a yes, no instead of a number.

Ten years. I graduated high school there and then got my got my BS and MS at TCU. I worked there for 2.5 yrs after graduation and then moved to AK to work. Where are you in TX?

Is there a preference or is it just a cost difference...
Or like the difference between hemoglobin vs hematocrit in terms of determining iron in the blood.
The snap gives immediate results and the spec is sent off. The snap is just normal or abnormal. The spec is more definitive; both require a six hour minimum fast for most accurate results.

How about that! That's where our daughter graduated in 2014. GO Frogs! We moved back to the DFW area, 1995, from the Kansas City area; Grapevine for 17 years, and now Colleyville for over 11 years. What years did you work at TCU. Two of our TCU friends worked there, too, and retired last year... or the year before.

How did you end up in AK?! Especially a Texas girl.

I know the area well! I didn’t work at TCU; sorry. I stated it wrong but I meant I worked in Fort Worth, as a wildlife biologist for the federal government. I moved to AK when I received a promotion to work as a wildlife biologist there with my agency. I still have family in the DFW area so get over there frequently to see my sisters and their kids.

I probably read too fast, again.

I would love to hear your stories! Thanks for sharing what you have. You're not just the cat lady extraordinaire! Wow!

How’s Leo today and did you get his meds?

Leo did better today, but not 100%. Look at today's BG #s so far!

As far as the vet, I did not get a reply to my email or call. Kind of surprises me because no one responded to my email... I know my vet is not in until tomorrow (Friday), but sheesh. No one looked into Leo's SS to see what's happening, besides the rest of the message. Another vet in the office could have stepped in. They must be slammed with appointments.

I did not call them as I was working with Leo, plus accompanied DH to follow-up Dr appt since he won't remember any details of the appt; he didn't even remember going there TWICE yesterday for bloodwork! Why twice? Because of someone's incompetence, they told him they couldn't fit him in when he went the first time. Didn't make sense to me since they told me on Monday he needs to get there between 8:30-12:3 for s blood lab. I called them to inquire what happened after he returned home without a bandage on his arm. When I said let's reschedule Thursday's appt since the lab won't be available, they realized the boo-boo. After they figured out what went wrong, they called back and said the Thursday appt can be kept if he can get there before 3pm for the lab. So off he went a 2nd time. He didn't remember today those two trips yesterday. His short-term is getting worse. :(
