Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3

Bet that is a nice change for you! Have you noticed any other behavioral changes now that she is most definitely feeling better!

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102

Her +4 number is 102, but she just finished her food off from this morning.

Smaller portions throughout the day seem to be working well and she is coming around to eating on more of a schedule.

No noticeable changes otherwise, I think she may have lost some weight though, not much maybe 2 lbs, but I will keep a closer eye on it.
I have a scale big enough that I can weigh her and it is digital,so it works out well.

Sassy's +8 number 128, I will test her again in about an hour to make sure it doesn't rise more.

Not too concerned yet. But will keep a closer eye for a little while this evening.

Her +9 number is 135, not sure what is happening, I noticed the dog food got left out again and she could have nibbled on a few pieces.
The problem is if I put it up she can get to it and if I tuck it under the coffee table she still gets to it if she wants it.

I will test her again in another hour and hope it doesn't come up more.

you need to come up with a way to ensure she doesn't eat it - put the food and dog in another room when eating and remove it when he's finished. or put the cat in another room when feeding the dog - something that you will need to become diligent about, as you can see even a few pieces of kibble can raise the bg and while you want to get her into remission, you can't have any setbacks

Re: 1/1 Sassy - Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 189

She is still climbing and not sure what is going on.

Her +10 number is 189.

Here are all the facts of today, maybe laying all the details out there will help figure it out.

This morning at 4:45 am, she woke me up wanting food, so I got up and put a small amount in her bowl.
At 8:30 am my time 3 1/2 hours later her number was 71, really good.
At around 12:30 pm, which would be her +4 number, it had come up but I noticed that she had eaten the rest of what was in her bowl.
She hasn't eaten since then until now, I gave her more food, it is 6:30 pm here, but tested her before doing so and her number had risen again to 189.

The can of food I gave her today was Friskies Pate Ocean Fish w/ cheese, I know that the cheese versions have a little higher carbs,??? Could that be the cause?
I mentioned the dog food, but I am really not sure if that is what happened and she doesn't always get into it, it was a quick excuse that might be an issue.
I put the dog food where she can't get to it at all, but looking at the bowl, even if she did it could have only been a few pieces.

So, could it be the type of food?
Could it be not eating since before noon until now?

Just not sure I can blame it on dog food.

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 1

I was talking to someone else about the cheese flavored friskies and she found that it's around 16 mg of carbs! WAY TOO HIGH for what you want to feed.

Most of the friskies I think are higher in carb than you want to use - I know the special diet pates are low carbs, but the others are 8+ carbs -

honestly you may want to go back to Dr. Lisa's food chart and print all the foods in the brands you use that are under 10% carbs

I can tell you that fancy feast pate are under 10%, same with some wellness and evo 95%

so yes, between the dog food and cheese flavored food, could be why you are seeing the higher numbers

remove this food and let's see if she can bring herself back down into normal bg range - if not, then we may need to abort the trial and give a small amount of insulin - but I'd like you to hold off until tomorrow before doing this as she will get the food out of her system and hopefully be back on track

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 1

I find that peculiar, only because I had her on the Fancy Feast but only started seeing improvement after the change to Friskies.

She is due for her PMBG in about 20 minutes. Sorry for the delayed response, got caught up with her and realized it was way passed time to make dinner for us.

I will post her new number soon. And hopefully I still won't have to shoot her.
What should I shoot at if it is necessary?

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 1

I'm not exactly sure which Friskies you're feeding. The Tasty Treasures varieties are all in the 20% carb range (these are the flavors with cheese). This is the link to Dr. Lisa's food chart. The Friskies Classic Pate foods are all in the 6 - 11% carb range. By comparison, the Fancy Feast Classic varieties are in the 1 - 5% carb range. Just because the label says it's pate, doesn't mean that it's necessarily low carb. You need a list, like Dr. Lisa's, to help you know what to purchase if you want low carb. Some cats do better with slightly higher carb food but food that's still below 10% carb.

Between the possibility you fed Sassy a food that's 20% carb and her snacking on contraband, it's entirely possible that this is what's causing the spike in numbers. I would give this another cycle with no insulin to see if that's what's going on.

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 1

Well, Now I am thoroughly confused, it can't be the food, maybe the lack of it.

She ate around 6:30pm, which would be two hours ago.

Her PMBG is 99, and her number has come back down again.

Thank goodness for that but nothing makes sense as to why it was higher earlier.

Any ideas?

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 1

Yes it very easily CAN be the food that caused the higher reading.

The good news is that her pancreas is working and she was able to handle it and bring herself down.
In a way, you did a food test and now can see just how higher carb food affects her and why you need to always feed her low carb foods.

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 1

I will be taking another test for her before bed to make sure she at least stays where she is instead of increasing.

I will also be taking a look at the cans I have in the cabinet.
Tomorrow I will give her one without cheese also and see how she does.

Thanks for the advice.
Always appreciated. :)

Well, it looks like we got by, by the skin of our teeth.

Her PMBG +2 number is 89.

Time to call it a night and start again fresh tomorrow.

Like I mentioned before I will be switching the can of food I give her, one without the cheese and see what happens.

Good night

Re: 1/1 Sassy - AMBG 71 Day 3, +4 102, +8 128, +9 135, +10 1

Melissa --

It's possible that the +10 was a bad test/bad strip. However, the numbers were trending up so I suspect it was the variety of Friskies you were feeding and/or your kibble stealing kitty. Either way, I'm glad the numbers came back down.

If you get a test result that seems weird, I'd encourage you to re-test. Sometimes, it's just a glitchy test.
