Hi Everyone,

Basil continues to do beautifully, with a monthly blood check number of 107 this month. A year and a half off the juice!

He's energetic, happy and a bit of a food freak!

In fact, we are having a wee problem and I could use a little advice. I feed Basil at 8 am, noon, 4pm, 8pm and 11:30pm. I leave food out overnight for him in an automatic feeder set to open at 3 am. Well, he has learned how to open it and helps himself whenever he feels like it. Sometimes, 2am, sometime 11:31 pm (LOL) but usually around midnight or 1am. So he goes a long time during the night with no food--6 or 7 hrs--and I wonder if that is bad for his little pancreas. Should I try harder to outwit him? Don't know how I'd do that, but ...

Thanks everyone!
Lydia

heehee i don't have any idea but i'm just admiring basil's creativity in breaking into his feeder. smart little guy!

have you ever tried freezing catsickles? i wonder if he'd leave it alone til it thawed? punkin would probably eat it frozen, he's such a hoover, but some cats have more dignity than punkin! :-D

Ha ha. Yeah, I used to leave frozen cubes of Fancy Feast but I could hear Basil out there gnawing on them. You'd think I starve him! But he's a great weight and I'd like to keep it that way.

The only thing I've thought of so far is to leave his LEAST favorite food in the feeder. Then, at least he leaves it until after midnight.

LYDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!BASIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So glad to see you guys. Wow a year and a half alreday, so grear to hear you are doing.
I am so not surprised he broke into his feeder. I use the petsmart 5 feeder ehich turns around and seems
to be catproof, lol. If you want to try that one.

I have to say that I feed my gang of 4 before going to bed, maybe 11:00pm and
no feeders over night. If I did Max would for sure blow up to a 25 pound cat. (he's 20 pounds now)

So far, antijinx we are still going OTJ strong. Coming on to our 18 month annifursary too.

Hi Randi!

Wonderful to see you and to hear your anniversary is coming up, too. I still get a little teary when I think about how sick Basil was before we found this place.

I have that feeder. It just seemed so BIG, I bought the single-feed one but maybe I will try the big one. Thanks for that tip.

Yes this place is the best.
I know that feeder is a big one and I have 2, which don't get used that much.
Hugs to all of you.

(((Lydia))) 18 mos. OTJ --wow!!

Thanks for visiting Gabby!

I don't think it's a problem if Basil decides on his own when he wants to eat. It's less of an issue if he goes without food than if he was eating a lot all at once.

Re: 09/25 Basil Late Caturday Report: Toughts?

Thanks, everyone, Sienne--I hadn't thought of that not eating too much at once idea. I'm so afraid to tinker with "the magic," it makes it hard! LOL

Lydia!!! So glad to see you & Basil here!!! Miss you a lot & we are happy he is doing so well!!!
You know Moonie free feeds, so no good advice about sneaky eating from us!
Love that he can open the feeder himself   --Dont know is Moonie doeos, but It is ALWAYS empty when I get home    --Hugs & Lub from us!! Almost his Annifursary--we'll celebrate with a Party-OK??

Hi guys .. what a wonderful thing to read, a year and a half OTJ?? :-D :-D Mocha and twix both get fed at 10 o'clock p.m. and then not fed again until 8 a.m the next day .. They both eat different foods, so we can't leave them down at night and we don't want to feed much later then that, in case we go anyplace overnight and need family to come and feed them for us, we don't want them to be out to late just for us .. mocha seems to be surfing beautifully in the 50's/60's *antijinx*

Re: 09/25 Basil Late Caturday Report, Any More Thoughts?

It's interesting that you don't feed Mocha overnight, and I would consider doing that. But it looks like Mocha cruises in a much more shallow pool than Basil does! You say Mocha is in the 50s and 60s. Basil is in the 90s to 100, more typically, although we do sometimes see 70s. So, I feel like we are skating on thin ice, but maybe I'm overcautious. Perhaps I'll start another temporary condo for a fuller discussion of round-the-clock feeding.

Lydia & Basil... We've never met before. Congratulations on being 18 months OTJ!!! That's awesome!!!

I feed Blackie these times: PS, +2, +3, +5, PS, +2, +3, +4 (before my bedtime). I don't have an autofeeder because I'm home most of the time anyway, and if I need to leave for a bit, I'm home after a bit (sometimes not exactly on schedule LOL). She tends to go longer in the evening without food than the daytime because this bean needs her sleep. I think Basil's pancreas will be fine. However, someone with more experience may be able to help you with this.

Hey Lydia & Basil,
Great to see you guys! Rusty quasi-free-feeds at night. I put out his nighttime food when we go to bed (around 11) and usually he eats it within the hour. Then he sleeps all night with us. ECID.
It's hilarious that Basil has his feeder figured out. So, basically, you are just putting out the food and he is eating it when he wants. I'd say that is fine! He's free feeding.

18 months. Wow! I remember when Basil went OTJ and how impressed I was.

Basil is one smart kitty.

Curry recently went OTJ and is btwn 70 and 100. I do have 2 feeders. The 5 dish feeder during the day and the quiet 2 feeder dish at night that's on my bed. I too feel like I'm skating on thin ice with her and watch her like a hawk with the meals. She gets 8 meals in 24 hours. 6:00 9:00 12:00 and 3:00

I'm afraid to change this routine.

Whatever you are doing with Basil seems to be working.

Hugs
Tena
