Hopefully, he'll continue to come down nice and easy today.

Both kitties ate half their breffises this morning. I served FF Tender Liver & Chicken Feast with a bits of 1 leftover shrimp torn up and divided between them. They both picked out the shrimp and ate half their meals. I came through with the FortiFlora and did some sprinkling on top and they both cleaned their plates.

I hope everyone has a good Friday! Off to get ready for work.....

I don't know what J.D. does during the day, but his fur was very soft when I returned home from work at PMPS. His fur felt extra soft and silkly two days ago, as well. And, there is only 2 small pees and 1 medium poop in the litter box (both from J.D. (I think) Ginger has not gone all day, as far as I can tell. She always buries, and her pees are round balls, and there were none of those).

I started a new pen tonight, to see if there will be any affect on his BGs.

Tomorrow is our vet appointment. I don't know how receptive to new things,, my vet is..

  • Adequan Questions:

  • 1) Is it a steroid?
  • 2) I googled it a little and saw that it may not be right for pets having bleeding problems, because of it's anticlotting effects. Would poking an ear 6 to 15 times a say cause problems in this regard?
  • 3) If my vet agrees to try adequan, should I get bloodwork done first? I see that it may not be wisely used with pets having kidney or liver problems (J.D.'s were fine at his last bloodwork in June).
  • 4) I see that the Equine Adequan is better for cats. Where do you buy it? I found it for like $365.00 on Amazon.com.

1) No, it is not a steroid. It is a PSGAG.

2, 3) It is true that Adequan should not be given if there is a known clotting disorder. Poking the ear would likely not be an issue. The concern would be more with something like G.I. bleeding. A clotting profile can be done before starting, but it really should not be required. You could also do a CBC and recheck after a month or two of treatment to make sure it is being tolerated, but again, is probably not necessary. If you were to see any black tarry stool or other signs of bleeding, then you would want to discontinue use.

4) I buy mine in Canada, so pricing would be different here. Mine is Adequan Canine PSGAG 100 mg/ml, 5 ml vial. I believ that it comes in a box of 2 vials, but my vet sells them to me individually.

A nice side effect of Adequan is that it is reputed to enhance bladder health.

There was a good discussion on Adequan in Champ's condo today with some good links. I saw it on PetMeds and a couple of other sites for a little over $100, but i think you have to get the Rx.

Re: 09/23 J.D. PMPS 378 - Adequan Questions - Vet apt. tomor

So far, I've gotten adequan from my vet for $110 per vial. I have heard, but not researched, that you can get it online for much less.

It's also my understanding - and I could be wrong - that the only difference between equine adequan and canine adequan is the labeling. For the first vial we got, it was labeled "canine". When I got the second vial, it was labeled "equine". I didn't notice this difference until I went to use it. Of course I panicked, because I thought if it was for a gigantic horse, it had to be much more potent, so I called the vet. They were the ones that told me the strength was the same; the difference was just in the labelling.

If you're vet isn't receptive, my vet is very thorough, and very good about these sorts of things. Let me know, and I can PM you the info...

Thanks Amy. I'll let you know. Your vet is in Ewing?
Did you get the needles from your vet, as well?

My vet is on Alexander Road, in Princeton. Yep, they supply us with the syringes.

Thanks Amy.
Maybe, if I say, I'll go elsewhere... never mind, hopefully, he'll know something about Adequan.

Well, if he doesn't know adequan or you're not comfortable, my vet is great.
