A little better than yesterday.

J.D. has eaten his first breffis and it is almost time for his second coarse.

I did manage to somehow get squeezed in for a vet appointment on Saturday, to get J.D.'s poo-outside-the-box issues checked out. They told me they were all booked, and so I made another get out of work early and rush home to grab the cat and get to the last appointment of the day appointment with a different vet than J.D.'s regular one. They called me back later in the afternoon and said they could get me in Saturday morning with J.D.'s regular vet. I bet it was the size of J.D.'s medical folder, that got them to question whether he could be somehow squeezed in, for Saturday.
He hasn't had any outside the box or unusual placement of poo in the past two days, except him pooing in the middle of the big lawn outside (like a dog) about 3 days ago. Normally, when outside, J.D. goes to the woods or the dirt around a tree and digs a hole and poos near (sometimes in) the hole. The other day, he squatted in the middle of the lawn, and when he was finished doing his business, he galloped back to me, about a hundred feet, all happy, because I told him he was a Good Boy. Anyway, besides just checking him out back there, I want to ask if there is anything else besides Cosequin that I can give him for his "creaky back legs" (that's what my vet calls them). J.D. doesn't really like the taste of the Cosequin and I have to add all kinds of toppings to his food to get him to almost finish it. So, I haven't given him any in about a month and a half.

Good luck with the vet appt! You might talk to them about adequan. It is an intramuscular injection and has done wonders on our dog. I have heard great things from people who have cats on it as well.

Hi Dyana - I agree with Melissa - talk to your vet about adequan for J.D.'s creaky back legs. My Mario is on it for his arthritis, and it has helped him a lot. Melissa mentioned that it's an intramuscular injection, but it can also be given subcutaneously as well, which is what we do for Mario - just like Trixie's shot, but with a bigger needle.

Come to think of it, his LB issues may be connected to his creaky back end; I've heard that can be a symptom of arthritis, because they can't squat properly anymore.

That is good to know Amy! I didn't realize it was subcutaneous for a kitty. That would make more sense though since they aren't a 100 pound dog. :lol: I have also heard that about out of box poo issues and arthritis.

I think it was originally used intramuscularly for cats, too, but somewhere along the lines someone figured out it works as a SubQ injection, too....fortunately, 'cause I can't imagine doing an intramuscular shot with Mario!

Hi guys .. glad to see J.D. coming down some .. I am glad that you will be able to see his regular vet on saturday, it's kinda nice to stick with one vet who knows the whole story .. Maybe there is a link between his little ol' back legs and his poo issues .. I hope you get it figured out .. have a great day!

Hi Amy. How does it come from the vet? Like a bottle of fluid with a bunch of needles, and you measure it like we do insulin? Do you give it once a day? How long does it take to show any affect?
That might be better, than trying to get him to eat his Cosequin laced food. My civvie Ginger loves it, but J.D. does not.
:roll: I swear, sometimes, I think Ginger just wants me to give her medicine and "doctor" on her.. :lol:

J.D. ate his 1st dinner, and we went for a walk. There were at least 25 big dragon flies flying around like bats, where we were sitting out on the big lawn. Darting back and forth (just like bats). I guess they eat insects, too.

Now, we are back inside, and 2nd dinner has been consumed.
 
Hi Dyana-

Yes, it comes in a vial, just like insulin. I've gotten it from my vet so far, but it's my understanding that it can be purchased online for less (of course).

There's a "loading dose": you do injections twice a week for 4 weeks, then once a week for 4 weeks, then every other week for 4 weeks, then once a month. However, with Mario, I can see the effects of it wearing off towards the end of 2 weeks, so I've been holding him close to the every other week dosage for a bit longer. My vet is a bit nervous about that, but I had asked about it over on Health, and several people gave it on an as-need basis, ranging from once a week to every other week, for an extended period of time.

The vet said it would take around 4 weeks to see results, but I started seeing improvement after just a couple shots.

Dosage is based on weight, and it is quite a bit more than insulin. Plus, the needles are much bigger - I'm not home so I can't remember for sure of the top of my head, but I want to say 21 gauge.

It really has done wonders for Mario...his posture and movement are greatly improved. He still really can't jump, and at 16.5 years old, I'm not sure if that's going to come back. But he is definitely way more comfortable. And, I have a theory that the cosequin just did not agree with him anyway...but that's a whole other ball of wax.

Hmm. I hope my vet would be willing to give that a try. It sounds like it works really good. I'll cross my fingers. Please wish me luck. It would be so nice if J.D. had a little more movement. He climbs the stairs to the basement to get to the litter boxes, and he does trot and slow gallop a little bit with encouragement. Oh, I hope I can get it, and give it a try.
