Condo here.

Hello all.

It's been a while mostly because I was feeling overwhelmed, but also because Mochi seems to be doing better.

He had three teeth extracted last Thursday. Two were infected and one was being reabsorbed (?). The vet checked his glucose while he was under, but I haven't gotten the result(s) yet. Still working with my contact at the rescue on that. Hopefully soon.

The last instructions I received from his vet were not to shoot if he's under 200. They seem to think he might be going into a remission and/or can be controlled with diet alone. They offered an Rx for Purina DM, but I turned it down. I didn't get to talk to the vet last week when he was there for his dental work, but the vet tech said afterwards that since his numbers have been good I can stop testing him and just keep an eye out for signs of diabetes. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that just yet though.

He's been off the insulin for two weeks now (give or take) and his numbers have been pretty consistently in the green with a few trips up into the blue. I was following the SLGS protocol and that recommends not shooting anything under 150 if you're unsure how kitty reacts to insulin, which I am since he was being OD'd when I got him and hasn't really had any insulin since. So what now? Are these numbers consistent with a remission? If not, should I try TR protocol for a while and see what happens? I admit I'm very hesitant to shoot him at his current numbers (and against the vet's instructions).

TIA! Kimberly & Mochi

Things are looking good for Mochi. :D I wouldn't restart insulin now, given that you are seeing numbers into the 50's. That dental sure made a difference! September 8th was the last day he had higher numbers. I would count 14 days from then and if he is still green, that is remission. :) If you get blue ata a test, feed a meal and test 3 hours later to see if he is bringing down. After that time, you can taper down the testing, but I would still test at least weekly for a while, then monthly, or if anything is off. Keep an eye on his mouth, dental issues can throw kitties out of remission.

I've been keeping an eye on the ss since you last posted. What a difference dental care can make! For us it was key. Glad you turned down the Purina DM.

I agree with Wendy's instructions and will add one thing. When you hit day 14 of green AM and PM BGs, make sure and post so we can CELEBRATE!!! :D:cool:
