09/14 Eddie AMPS 355 +3 315 PMPS 403 +3 423 +8 279

Busy day yesterday, didn't get on board much. Melissa answered your question too. Eddie's onset seems to be around +3. That means getting a test before onset, if he's on his way upwards to preshot, pretty much will tell you nothing. Onset is when the next shot starts to work. If he's going up from mid cycle to preshot, he's going to keep going up until after the next shot takes effect. Meaning, that +2.5 last you took told you nothing and was expected. Getting a +3 or later at night will be a better test for Eddie.

Also as Melissa said, bounce breaking cycles can have later nadirs. I once spotted Neko's nadir at +15. Think of the cycle not only as the time between shots, but really the time that insulin shot is effective. Which for Levemir can carryover into the time after the next shot.

Ok, wait, I'm confused. You said above "getting a test before onset" is a good idea since his onset seems to be around +3. So, would that not mean a +2.5? But you also say the +2.5 "told you nothing and was expected."
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I've been doing a +3 except for yesterday when I did an AM +2 and it showed a drop. So, which is the best time?

No I did not.

I said, a test before +3 (onset), when he had been rising to preshot, like he did yesterday afternoon until PMPS, isn't going to tell you much, especially if rising that high/fast. If he's rising and it's that late in the cycle, his BG isn't going to suddenly drop until the next shot onsets. Think of a curve in a smile shape. Once you've reached the bottom of the curve, it's all uphill until the next shot take effect. The only qualification is if his numbers are flat and a lot lower, when there could be small wobbles downward or a double dip. Those cases are not significant drops in numbers.

Yesterday morning, you had no tests between the previous evening's +3 and AMPS. So, you don't know if he was rising towards AMPS, or his AMPS was a dropping number, or flat. From the look of the AM+2 yesterday, it was a dropping number caused by a bounce break. That's what yesterday's +2 told you.

So, which is the best time?
Depends on the situation. Is he rising, dropping, or flat into preshot? Also, how high is his BG.

Well, I'll try my best. But, tbh, trying to decipher the workings of Levemir reminds me of those word problems in algebra where there are two trains travelling at different speeds in opposite directions and one had to use a distance, rate and time formula to determine who arrives where and when (and even then perhaps someone is wearing a green hat). My mind doesn't work that way but I'm trying.

That was either close to nadir or he's going to keep sliding down to AMPS in a bounce break. Hard to know which.

I'm starting to see the Levemir cycle on a wheel rather than a straight line. Given this morning's AMPS (which I'll post for 09/15) 256, onset was between PM +3 and +8 (a wide range I know but still...) and given AMPS today 256, nadir may have been between PM+8 (09/14) and AMPS (09/15). I'll see what a +2.5 or so gives me this morning.
I feel like Eddie's Levemir is on a planet different from Blue's...
