I noticed in Lisa & Leo's condo she has been giving hc, mc and lc food to help manage Leo's drop. What is the difference between mc and lc?

I managed to get all of Furball's insulin in this morning. Maybe today I can see how she is really doing on this new dose. I have to go back to work tomorrow, so I won't be able to get extra tests in during the day.

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

HC is like 15% to 18% usually, MC is from 10% to 15%, and LC is generally less than 10%.
Some people consider LC to be below 5% and MC fro 6% to about 12%, but you get the idea. I use the FF Elegant Medleys as a MC food as they are around 9% to 15% in carbs. You can also mix LC with HC to get MC.

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

The way I'm reading this....if a bean is feeding 4-5% carb, medium carb could be 6-10%, and high higher than that? All depending on what the kitty normally eats, and how kitty reacts to carbs?

(Not meaning to derail the thread, just asking for clarification.)

And Woohoo on the shot this morning! \M/

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

Hi Carla

Any food that has 10% carbs or less is considered LC (low carb).
Examples include:
--- Home-made food based on Dr. Lisa Pierson's Meat&Bone Raw/Cooked Catfood Recipe, ca. 1-2%.
--- Fancy Feast Chunky Chicken (5%)
--- Wellness Beef & Chicken (4%)
--- Nature's Variety Chicken & Turkey (5%)

Any food that has 11-15% carbs is considered MC (medium carb), going by what we were told.
Examples include:
--- IAMS Salmon Formula (13%)
--- Sophisticat Sliced Chicken in Gravy (13%)
--- Hills Sciene Felione Growth Liver & Chicken (12%)

Any food that has 16% carbs or more is considered HC (high carb), going by what we were told.
--- 9 Lives Shredded Chicken in Gravy (20%)
--- Royal Canin Green Peas and Rabbit (18%)
--- Whiskas Tender Morsels in Gravy (16%)

(N.B. Values are based on Janet and Binky's food charts. Values can and do vary as a formula for a certain type of food is adjusted. The food charts/lists used around FDMB are, as far as I know, not more recent that 2010, though I am not certain about Hobo's Guide to Nutritional Values.)

Much of the food discussions in Lisa/Leo's (and Alexa/Reuben's) recent condos rides on the need to "Know Thy Cat" (Thank you, Jojo!) in terms of her/his carb sensitivity. Some cats can be brought out of low numbers with MC, some even with "higher %" LC varieties. Some need the HC. Part of what makes the process Lisa and Alexa are currently experiencing with their cats so tricky is that there's no way to find out what works other than trying it. It's learning by doing. They're learning, and they're doing, and they're doing great!

Hope this helps
Hugs
Jane

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

Thanks for the replies. It's good information to have so I'll be ready when I need it for Furball. Not that I want to deal with her going that low, but I know it's all part of the process leading to OTJ (hopefully). I want to make sure I have the right supplies stocked up.

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

I couldn't agree with Jane more. The LC, MC, HC percentages are guidelines. They may not be wholly applicable to your cat. As an example, Jill's Alex can get a bump of 30 points in her numbers from freeze dried chicken. Alex is very carb sensitive. What you feed may also depend on where in the cycle you are. A fast drop early in the cycle may take a more aggressive use of carbs than a slow descent that ends up with a number below 50 later in the cycle.

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

Morning Carla, There is some very good info here. :-D YAY on the shot - I hope Furball decides that this dose is a good one. :-D Enjoy your day today.

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

Morning Carla and Furball, great information in your condo on the foods and carbs. Have a nice Sunday.

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

Hi Carla, Congrats on the good shot! :-D I hope Furball likes this dose. Good question and responses about the food carb ranges to prepare before you need it! The related carb discussison in Lisa and Leo's condo also reminded that we have to give the food time to work, no easy thing when the kitty is low. Also giving small amounts to not fill up the cat too early, and using the lowest carb that will work to get the kitty up. ECID, maybe there is some way to do a sort of food response curve to estimate how the cat will respond ahead of time.
Hope you and Furball have a great day!

Re: 09/09 Furball, AMPS=297, Food Carb Question

Always good to get past those furshots.
I think they at least help us to re-focus, kinda like getting your hand slapped.

Hope the dose goes well.
Have a relaxed day!

This looks like a good dose for Furball right now, especially with her dental on Wednesday. She dipped into blue today. I don't want her to go too low before the dental and 1.0 units is easy to give a half dose on the day of the dental.

AMPS=297
+3=191
+5.5=180
PMPS=296

Great blues sweet little furball. Good luck with the dental. You'll come out smelling like a rose, I'm sure!
I learned something new today about the technical answer to what constitutes MC and HC technically and how this all varies per kitty. Thanks for asking the question as we, too, benefitted from the response.

Need to do some stocking up on MC and HC as well. We have 1 HC in the house and it is on my to do list to get out there and get a wider range to have on stock so I don't have to go for LC + maple syrup to equal HC.

Have a great day guys and keep up the great work.

Hi Carla (and all) - glad the insulin went in! Although I'm late to make that comment!

It's good you raised the question about mc/lc/hc ... we've been literally playing around to see what works. Thanks Jane for posting the detailed information and examples of foods that fit these categories. (Another thread bookmarked!) We had to mix hc + lc to get mc, but now we have Fancy Feast versions of each. Jane didn't mention, but Fancy Feast Roasted Turkey is around 8-10% I think - I have the numbers at home. That worked well with Leo - now we have to see just how long the mc's last with him. Jane is right - such experimentation with these little crazy bouncy furballs! And you have one with that name!!! As Sienne alluded to, we will be trying some more aggressive carbs with him in the early feeding(s) to work on that crazy dip he has early in the cycle. Good luck!
