08/26 Fistuk, AMPS 358

A couple options on the subq fluids. The first is a special harness: https://www.ezivharness.com/ That will help if he gets restless. Second option, I have heard of people giving small amounts of fluids through syringes, but it would take a long time and practice to go slowly. Adding water to the food is also a good idea.

Have you seen this video on giving fluids? How to Give Subcutaneous Fluids (Video) I found it really important to get Neko used to the idea of fluids and have a relaxed place for her. I put a heat reflective pad in front of the hot air vent for her to relax on, and sprinkled freeze dried treats around for her to nibble on. I got her to relax there, and pretend poked at first. It's like BG testing, a comfy place fluids spot and getting them used to it.
Thank you
I think giving just water is not going to be enough because his electrolytes are getting out of balance with ketones.
Thanks for the video. I’ll watch it. Problem is that all these cats in the videos are much more cooperative than Fistuk. But I will def have a look at that resource. thank you!

The video is in the post, and just worked for me. What error message did you get?
Don't know if it's because Fistuk doesn't have much fat or the needle is just too big
Often you'll get really big needles from the vet - 18 g. I've seen them referred to as harpoons. Ask the vet if they have thinner ones. A 20 or 21 g is easier to put in, but it'll take longer for the fluids to go in. It's a trade off, I went for smaller needles.

Computer played tricks in me yesterday. Managed on the iPhone today. every video is helpful. The problem still remains that Fistuk gets really stressed. He moves around a lot. His whole body tenses so it’s difficult to find enough skin to grab and tent. He’s going into survival instinct to prevent animals from picking him up in the same way.
I’ve downloaded a course by a behavioural vet and learned lots of tips which I’ll try once Fistuk is finally back home xx

I have a question about the e needle @Wendy&Neko. I see on the package of the needles I have 18G x 1 1/2” 40mm. I don’t understand in needles and see that there’s for example 38mm. How is it different. Is it ok? How do I know what to look for. Thanks!

18G x 1 1/2” 40mm
The gauge is the thickness of the needle - the higher the gauge the thinner the needle. So a 21G needle will be thinner than an 18G needle. The mm is the length of the needle. I use a 21G needle when giving fluids to Bandit. She doesn't like it either - not so much the initial poke (which is bad enough as compared to insulin syringes) - but she also hates the sensation of fluids going in. Fortunately, she is a docile cat so she doesn't get angry. My civvie Budge who also gets fluids doesn't seem to mind them as much. The challenge with her is that she is a restless cat and hates sitting still so we have to distract her with chin scratches etc.

Have you tried giving fluids with a syringe rather than an IV set? It goes much faster so it can be over more quickly.

Thank you Bhooma :)
And the inches? Or my?

I haven’t tried with a syringe but I’d like to try. Using the thicker needle for sure hurts him. And then he also doesn’t like the fluids coming in so I was thinking it’s worth trying the syringe to get it in more quickly

What’s the difference in the colours? The 18g is pink
I asked for the 20g and it’s organe
The colors might just be for easy differentiation by pharmacists or medical personnel.

Just like U100 insulin syringes are orange and U40 syringes are red..
