08/24 Molly AMPS 203 Molly Vet visit today

Molly had diarrhea a week ago. I gave her probiotic and now she’s not pooping at all. This is day 3. She tried to poop last night. Nothing came out what do I do?
For those concerned I’ll be using this thread for her AMPS also

Oh I hate constipation. Miralax, 1/8 tsp twice daily, is usually pretty efficient for us. Fish oil can also be helpful. Lactulose from the vet often works well.
SubQ fluid (lactated ringers solution) is given to cats with CKD, and can also aid in constipation by rehydrating kitty.
You have to find the magic that works for Molly - look forward to more suggestions. Kisses to your girl.

The sub q fluids are IV fluids that you administer just under the skin. If she is constipated she might be dehydrated enough to benefit from the fluids in addition to anything else you are trying. If you rub your finger along her gums, are her gums slick like a slippery piece or ice, or are they "tacky"?

If tacky, that is a good indicator that she needs more hydration and could benefit from the sub q fluids. Your vet can get you hooked up with a bag and teach you how to do it if you go this route. For me, the vet first gave fluids in the office, then sent me home with a bag for supplemental. I called up a vet clinic very close to my house and found that some of their techs do pet sitting. So I called one, and asked if she could come over instead of a pet sitting visit and help me learn to do sub q. It was a great way to learn. (PS - does Molly have a heart murmur? That might limit ability to receive fluids under the skin).

Okay she’s peeing good, eating and playful. Just not pooping. No heart murmur that I know of. She gets like this and don’t know what to do.

How much water do you mix with the miralax?

Good luck at the vet. I would also recommend fluids. When we got fluids Templeton was practically perky after a long vet visit.

True. And if the Miralax hasn't worked in the past, maybe better to take her in. Did you feel her gums? That would decide it for me.
No, but I will at lunch time? If they’re sticky means she’s dehydrated? Lots of pees in the litter box. She was kneading last night. I just don’t get it

Home from the vet. Molly’s constipated vet gave her a enema. Wanted x rays and blood work. But I declined for now. Vet mentioned clearlax same as miralax. In her food every time and 1/4 tsp. Mentioned changing her food so any suggestions. Thought maybe I should skip the insulin for tonight

If she doesn’t poop regularly after this, I would get an x- Ray because it is the only way to see how backed up she is - how full her colon is. Actually it is a good idea to get an x-ray after the enema to make sure she’s cleaned out

Restoralax or clearlax in Canada are the same as Miralax in the US. As for food, you can add a bit of pumpkim (pure no spices) or babyfood squash to her food to add some fiber.

Why would you not shoot tonight?

Ruby had an enema just last week and we did it at home. She's pooped since then with the help of acupuncture, some good belly massages, subQ fluids and Lactulose. I would give her the clearlax every day, and make sure she gets a lot of water in her food, at least 1 part water to 2 parts food. If she doesn't poop again in a day or so increase the clearlax by 1/8th of a teaspoon. I would consider giving her insulin.

I’m considering the x ray the vet was helpful. She’s going to call tomorrow

If she doesn’t eat, but she has eaten. So I won’t skip
Her not eating is not a good reason to skip. You have a couple hours after shot time before the insulin onsets, so you have some time to get food into her. And even cats having surgery who cannot be fed, can get a half dose. Insulin does more than combat the carbs in food. It's used by many cells in the body.

Okay I didn’t listen to the vet. She had her insulin tonight. I’m going to pick up pumpkin tomorrow try that again. Clearlax was started tonight also,
Thanks Wendy :)
