Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323

Furball just threw up what she ate. I have not given her shot yet. Should I shoot even if she doesn't eat any more since she is so high?

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323 Threw Up - Should I Shoot?

I gave Furball her shot since she is so high and I managed to coax her to eat a little bit.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Threw Up After Eating

Darn. I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner. But you did what I'd have suggested: Shoot. I'm glad you got her to eat a bit. When were you thinking of getting a follow-up BG?
Jane

Edited to add: I was wondering, Carla, if you might consider adding a note in your signature pointing out that your SS has Sheet 1 AND Sheet 2? In case people want to see more of her history and forget to look for the first sheet? Just a thought. Oh and also: HOW do you clean Furball's ears?? I don't think any of our cats would let us!

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Threw Up After Eating

I just called off work and am planning to take Furball to the vet when they open. Of course I'll have to wait a while since I don't have an appointment. I wish they opened earlier. It will still be over an hour before they open.

Jane - my previous vet gave me some ear cleaner that I put in her ear and then use q-tips to wipe what I can out. I have to be careful not to reach in too far. It is a struggle with Furball since she has had a lot of ear infections and is sensitive to having that ear touched, but I have to do it because of her tendency to get ear infections.

I am going to check on her now and was thinking of getting another test at +1, which is in about 30 minutes. Thanks for the reply.

I will add the note to my signature. I didn't think of that. Thanks.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Threw Up After Eating

339 at +1. She didn't change much. The vet opens in 45 minutes. I am going to call first and see when is the best time to take her in.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Threw Up After Eating, +1=339

The vet doesn't have any openings today, so I am going to go sit and wait. Hope it doesn't take too long.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Vet Update

I actually got to see the new vet Furball has been seeing for her diabetes. When you're a walk-in you never know who you'll get. There are 7 different doctors at vet I go to. That worked out well.

The vet seemed to think Furball threw up because her numbers are up and she might be getting an ear infection. She didn't think it was anything serious. She tested her BG at the office at 9:00 and she was 378. Her temperature was normal. The vet gave her a 2-week antibiotic shot (Convenia) for the ear and a shot of Reglan to settle her stomach. She said she can eat small amounts throughout the day. She wants me to keep an eye on her until at least lunch time. I will decide if I am going to go to work for half a day for the afternoon after I see how she is doing for the rest of the morning. I may stay home all day and keep an eye on her. Right now she just wants to lay on the floor near me. She seems like she doesn't feel very good.

Poor baby!! Hope the shot will help Furball-- Moonie had an ear infection not too long ago, in her inner ear we think..seh was stumbling & i got very freaked out, but after a few days of ABs she was fine..
Wishing Furball a quick recovery--Hugs & Love from us!!

((Furball)) and ((Carla))

I'm sorry Furball isn't feeling good. Since she's been vomiting, she'll have lost some of her hydration. Can you encourage her to drink, or add water to her food to rehydrate her? Might help perk her up. Also, one question: Has Furball had Convenia before? (Just asking because of allergy potential.)

Sending vines!
Jane

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Vet Update

Has Furball been given Convenia before? We generally discourage Convenia for two reasons. The first is that it is for skin infections and using it for anything else, it doesn't have any research to support those uses. The larger concern is that if your cat has a reaction to the antibiotic, it's a 2-week shot. Once it's in, you have to wait 2 weeks for the effects to dissipate. Vets like it because you don't have to give a pill.

You may want to give Furball some baby food until you know her stomach has settled down. It's easy on the stomach. You want a brand that is only a protein and broth (e.g., Beechnut or Gerber Stage 2). No onions or veggies.

I've generally used Pepsid when Gabby's stomach is upset. You may want to discuss that with your vet. It's something you an get at any drugstore and doesn't require a trip to the vet.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Vet Update

I don't know if Furball has had Convenia before. I'd have to look through her records. Some of my other cats have had it and had no problems with it. It seemed to work fine for them with infections. My old vet and my new vet both use it.

I've used Pepcid for another cat (1/4 of a tablet once a day). I could try with Furball if her stomach doesn't settle down.

Sienne thanks for the tip on the baby food.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Vet Update

sending feel better vines for Furball. I hope it is just an off day. Baby food works great when they don't feel so well - I've used that with Mannie. You just want to be sure to get the one without onions and veggies. Mannie loves the stuff.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Vet Update

Furball seems to be doing better. Her +5 was 283. She has eaten a little bit of food a couple of times this morning. I checked her records and she has not had Convenia before. Hopefully she won't have a reaction to it. She hasn't yet. I didn't have any baby food when Furball first wanted to eat, so I gave her some of her regular food and that is what she ate. I went to the store, but could not find any baby food without fruits or vegetables.

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Vet Update

Hi guys .. I'm sorry to hear that furball is not feeling well .. in all the years we've had mocha she never had ear problems .. right after she went OTJ, we took our first vacation in two years .. came back, her ears were folded down and they were gunky .. thought perhaps she had ear mites (had gone to the vet about two weeks earlier) and tried over the counter ear mite drops to no avail .. decided to take her back to the vets to have them checked out and found out she had bacterial infections in both ears! We were given drops to use in her ears for about a week I do believe and they cleared right up, never came back .. and twix never got it either .. I figured it was just mocha, being mad cause we went on vacation  But I do really hope furball does well with her new meds ..

Re: 08/13 Furball, AMPS=323, Vet Update

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and support. Furball ate more this evening at shot time. Close to what she usually does. No more throwing up. She seems to be sleeping a little more. It looks like she should be feeling close to normal by tomorrow.

Glad to hear Furball is feeling better. I find giving Tucker some fresh or dried catnip helps to sooth him. I've heard it can calm their stomachs.
