08/09 Eddie AMPS 313 +7 383 PMPS 293 +8 250

How is he feeling and acting today?
He is acting quite normal (I mean, for Eddie); that is, he's now responsive. He shows up for testing without prompting. But his eating is funny again: he will eat a little at his place and then walk away. I have to follow him and encourage him to eat so that I can give him insulin.

He does not to have stomach upset as he happily eats pill pockets.

But about the BG, here's a question:

Eddie rec’d 100ml sub-q yesterday (Aug 8th) and will receive another 100ml tomorrow (August 10th)/
We have an appointment with the vet for a checkup on the 22nd.
But, the question for me is about Mirtazapine:

Although the European Commission (can’t find date) says “The effects of mirtazapine on glucose regulation have not been evaluated. In the case of use in cats with diabetes mellitus, glycaemia should be regularly monitored”, recent reports say. I'm doing that.
I also find: VCA Hospitals: “Diabetes: Mirtazapine may cause a loss of control of diabetes by increasing blood glucose (sugar)” in cats.

At the moment, Eddie is on Mirtazapine. He’s been on it for 4 days at home and it has contributed to his renewed interest in food.

Maybe there is no correlation between Mirtazapoine and BG but I thought I should mention it. In any case, Eddie is much more interested in food and is more alert and responsive. He’s not really drinking much water and has used the kitty box sparingly. I read that Mirtazapine should not be given beyond 14 days and even by then (if still giving it), the dose needs be reduced gradually.

I'm about to do a PMPS in the next little while but in the meantime, do you have any thoughts or info on Mirtazapine? I asked the IM vet the same question and he said "Cats have been on it for years (no idea about side effects because I’m not a big user of it myself and have not used it long term, but have listened to lectures on the drug where it was used for months)."

Is he getting Mirataz (ear cream), or the pill. Onset of the transdermal is more gentle, and less side effects (meowing or howling). I would say dozens, or maybe even hundreds of cats here have been on it. No BG effect, other that whatever they get from eating more food.

I have never heard about the 14 day limit or gradual reduction. Can you point me to a source? I am also on a small cell lymphoma group where it is used a lot, and haven’t heard those limits. An IM vet comments on that group.

He's on the transdermal. No meowing or howling. I'll have a look for the 14 day limit. I was surprised to find the claims that it had an effect on BG.
