08/05 - Jaxon - OTJ Trial Day 1 - AMBG 47 +4 59 +8 50 +10 50 PMBG 49 +1 52 +3 63

Wow! I think he’s ready for an otj trial or at least a food trial. Let me discuss this with some others and I will be back later. :D

Jaxon is looking great. He’s coming down the dosing scale quickly and has stayed in great numbers. Today could be the 0.25u depot and we don’t normally take back-to-back reductions but he would likely do well with a trial. Since Elise has helped so much, I’ll give her the opportunity to post the instructions. He doesn’t need a food trial. Those are only for cats who have blue PSs.

I would like to throw in a reminder for what we do if a CG has data as Allison does and we get a 40s BG at PS. In this case, as in the other night, if a CG has data, has shot BGs 50-70 range, has supplies, can stall, and is able & available to test through the cycle, if necessary, the process is:

  • Retest in 20 mins to see if BG is rising on its own at the end of the cycle
  • If not, feed 1 tsp of LC food and retest in 20-30 mins (20 is better)
  • Lather, rinse, repeat but only feed more LC, and only a very small amount, if the BG does not change;
  • Shoot as soon as the BG rises above 50 on a human meter; feed a normal meal and test at +1 and +2
The process is also provided in Dealing with Low Preshots.

Good luck with the trial!

I've been watching Jaxon's spreadsheet and I'm not surprised you are starting your trial. Good luck! Good job to both of you.

Once he is OTJ ... I likely will keep up with daily testing .... maybe not as frequently, but more like I used to before he started the juice, that about right?

After you can post here whenever you like. We love updates. There is also the Honeymooners’/ OTJ site if you prefer. I never made it there.

Here you go.

Instructions for starting the OTJ trial
  • Start the trial on the next green pre shot.
  • If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
  • Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.
  • After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!
  • Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.
  • Good luck with the trial!!!
  • Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!
Good luck!

More food it seems .... though he did not eat all of the stuff I gave him last time (until I added some incentive of treat dusted)

That’s perfect. He might stay low. Many ready for otj where it happens quickly like Jax have a normal low bg. It’s been 24 hours since his last shot so don’t worry. One down and 13 to go. Enjoy your evening.

Yes. You test only at amps and pmps. It’s the second bullet on the directions. For some that’s the hardest part of the trial, lol.
