Just dropped Squallie off at the vet’s. I feel horrible. He seemed very fragile to me this morning and I am so worried about him. He has lost so much weight, he feels bony, and he was trembling and just seemed fragile. He did NOT want to get out of his carrier at the vet’s, and they have a new tech who scooped him up before I could hug him and reassure him I’ll be back for him. But the vet is giving him a big dog run to stay in, instead of a little cage, and is letting him have his bed from his carrier. He said they’ll also put down a litter box and lots of towels. I will pick him up at 5:30.

Prayers...prayers...prayers being sent to Squallie and to you , Lucy :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: That he is calm and peaceful under the watchful eye of your vet/staff ...that you can have peace in your heart abd 5:30 will come quickly ❤️ And of course that he poops quickly and easily :bighug:that he can come home early because he has a full poo .

Huge thanks to everyone for the prayers and vines. I plan on calling around noon-ish to see how he is doing; the vet said to call at 3:00 to see about checking him out for the night. Hoping he doesn't have to go back tomorrow!!! The vet did say that he could no longer feel the big, hard mass of feces that is causing the problem, so apparently things are moving, just very slowly. Praying that this morning's enema does the trick!

Come on, Squallie, a good poop and then you can go home again!

What's the situation on the bone fragment? Are you going to see if it works its way out on its own or does the vet think it's going to need help? Poor Squallie, that's a lot going on.

I still have to call the dentist about it. He'll probably tell me to watch it and see if it works it's way out.:(

I talked to the vet tech about half an hour ago. Still no poop. They are giving him some meds, Lactulose, I think, and Cerenia, and said I could pick him up any time after 3:00. My son will have to pick him up on his way home from work at 5:30 because I can't carry his crate. :( I wish he could come home earlier, I miss him like crazy and am still worried sick about him. When does this turn into a desperate emergency? He is barely eating anything. How long can this go on before it becomes deadly?

I have all the ingredients for the liver shake, except the spirulina - it hasn't gotten here yet. Does anyone know if it's okay to go ahead and make the liver shake without it? Just to try and get something into him?

Yes it’s ok to do liver shake sans spirulina. Do you have kelp flakes, granules or powder at home? If so, try that in the shake.

Note: I also added about 1/2-1 tsp egg white powder (or cooked egg white don’t add raw egg white) to azaleas liver shake to add more nutrients and easily digestible proteins.

I don't have anything healthy like that around here, lol. The spirulina will be here tomorrow or the next day, but I want to get some food into him in the meantime. He really hasn't eaten anything at all today, except for a couple of bites of breakfast. He's so skinny now, and he is weak and trembling. It breaks my heart. And I'm afraid he will die.

Anyone new to constipation trouble should have at least an overview of felineconstipation.org. Things are going in the right direction if the vet can't feel anything big or hard.

I would suggest to review with the vet how to check hydration status and also if you can feel his abdomen to asses progress or problems. Hydration is very important to resolve and prevent constipation.

Hope he feels lots better and will eat for you!

Oh, Lucy, don’t let your mind go there ! You both have been through so much and you both are fighters !!! Some hard poops are not going to hold Super Senior Squallie down !!! Once he gets home he will relax and his body will be able to react to all the procedures . ALL will be WELL :bighug:❤️

I know, been there. Hang in. Squallie’s a fighter and so are you.

Np about trying LS without spirulina or kelp. If he doesn’t dive into the LS you can assist feed, at first enough to whet his appy and so he can taste for himself that it’s goooood. If he’s still not into it or anything else, assist feed ls and alternate with any other bland food. Try to keep LS intake at max 60ml/cc of LS per day (that’s about 1/4 cup if I’m remembering correctly).

I agree with Carol that hydration is very important especially when giving Lactulose and Miralax Also do check out the Feline constipation site she posted. It has everything you need to know
Hugs for you:bighug: and poop vines for sweet Squallie.

Sending all sorts of vines your way for gentleman Squallie. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

You definitely should try a little assist feeding. It doesn't take long for hepatic lipidosis to set in. Maybe get your DS to pick up a can or two of a/d or Recovery formula, and some feeding syringes if you don't have them. Both are LC and easy to assist feed. You want to assist feed something they don't normally eat as they could develop food adversion. Neko actually like the Recovery formula and would eat some of it on her own.

I have some a/d! I completely forgot that I had it, thanks for jogging my memory! I will try that! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yay. Adding some water to some a/d or recovery and mushing together in a blender adds moisture whether assist feeding or self-feeding and is easier for assist feeding, too. And adding a little plain pumpkin or baby food squash blends in easily too.

When Abby was so sick on her hyper t meds, she ate part of a scrambled egg, just trying to think of something he might eat, hope he feels better :bighug:soon

Squallie is on his way home. I just spoke with the vet; still no major poop, but the blockage is now very "soft and squishy" so hopefully it will make it's grand exit tonight! He is worried because Squallie's bladder is very full and seemingly stretched out, but that worries me less because he has always had a large bladder and pees absolute oceans every time he goes. What IS very worrisome is that he found a lump on the upper wall of Squall's colon. He says it's very small, but it's there, and we don't know what it is or if there are more that he can't feel. It isn't showing up on the x-ray, so the next step would be ultrasound. At this point we don't know if it is a part of this current issue or something unrelated.

So the game plan going forward is for him to come home and relax, and see if he will pee, poop, and eat. Praying as hard as I can for all three of those to happen!

Prayers for results!!!

My son kindly picked up some spirulina capsules for me to use in the liver shake; I was planning on just emptying the contents of the capsules till I have the correct amount. Under Other Ingredients it says Gelatin 9the capsule, I assume), cellulose, and Stearic Acid Vegetable Source. I don't know what that last one is. Does anyone know if it's safe to give it to him?

He just peed an ocean of pee!

You can get the spirulina from GNC.

The dentist should do something NOW. I wonder if Squallie wasn't chewing the food well (do to the psin/discomfort) and that contributed to the constipation.

My son got the spirulina from GNC, too. I was just concerned about the Stearic Acid Vegetable Source, I don't really know what it is and if it's safe. And it may all be a moot point, because I think it's probably used in the manufacture of the capsule shells, which I would not be using anyway.

That's the same recipe I use. :)

So far the only thing I can get him to eat are Hartz Squeeze Ups (only supposed to have three per day) and crunchy treats (HC!). He won't touch the a/d or the liver shake. His BG is 159.

Yay for Squallie home yay for DS to bring home some spirulina yay for Squallie emptying his bladder big time!

Re stearic acid: there are proponents who suggest it’s safe and proponents who suggest (and those sources refer to a study) that it’s not safe bc it suppressed t-cells in immune function. Idk the amounts. Magnesium stearate is a no. What is the brand name ?

Eta: I see you mentioned the brand above).

Have you offered him small pieces of liver in its juices? Or tried assist feeding again?
Am I remembering correctly that he recently liked pieces of plain cooked chicken and chicken broth?
