I made sure J.D. ate first before giving his shot. We are still waiting for poo. The kitties are enjoying a little time outside on a lovely and cool New Jersey morning, with all the song birds singing and the squirrels coming to get their peanuts.
I mixed up 1/4 teaspoon of Miralax this morning, and gave J.D. part of that so far. I am hopeing to get the rest of it into him. How long can they go without pooping. Okay, he's had a couple small hard pieces, but no nice big regular poops.
I hate it when my condo is on this topic

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398

I sure hope J.D. gets some lb action with the Miralax. Being constipated is no fun and if he goes much longer, maybe he is impacted? I'm not an expert on cat poo, but people can become impacted and nothing will help except to take care of it in a manner that is not great to talk about this early in the morning!

I wish I was in your neck of the woods today. Cool weather sounds wonderful.

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398

Come on down JD and please poo for your mama bean! Sending pooping vines your way! It does stink when you have that kind of condo, but the great thing is that we all actually care and don't go ewwwww. I am with Georgia. I wish I was there today. Have a great day Dyana!

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398

Come on J.D. give your mom some aromatherapy already, are you and Maggie having some sort of perverted competition to see who can go the longest?

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398

Hmm. Sorry to read J.D. hasn't yet obliged you with LB prezzies as he ought to have done... Are you thinking you'll give the Miralax a bit more time to work?

Come on J.D., remember the chant:
What do we want?
Poopy! Poopy!
When do we want it?
NOW!

Fingers crossed for some LB action. And a non-poo-related condo for you soon, Dyana

Hi guys .. fingers crossed today is the day you see LB action .. I know maggie was struggling for awhile as well, and was given I believe lactulose? It helped her after a few cycles .. have a great day!

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - Should I take him to the vet?

I called the vet and made an appointment for 4:30pm. His regular vet is not there, today. I have gone before for him being constipated, and basically as much as I can remember or ever recorded, the vet did nothing.
I've also had an end of day appointment (or more than one), and rushed home from work, to find a prezzie in the box, and had to take the kitty to the vet anyway, because it was too late (right?) to cancel.

I'm at work, so don't know if he's gone. But how long can a kitty have small hard poos? Should I wait until Tomorrow?

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - Should I take him to the vet?

I haven't been following J.D's poo dilemma. How long has it been since he's poo'd? I went back 2 days. I think a lot depends on how frequent his output is usually.

Since this seems to be a recurring problem, I'd discuss whether getting x-rays is in order. You need to be sure J.D. isn't impacted. I'd also ask if this can be an issue of GI motility. (Zener has this problem and the vet prescribed Cisapride.)

You also need to be careful about giving Miralax if your cat is already constipated.

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - Should I take him to the vet?

are you getting lots of water into him? i'd mix as much water as he'll tolerate into his food.

if the appt is because he's constipated, i wouldn't hesitate to cancel at the last minute if he's gone when you get home. if they charge you a fee for cancelling late, it's gotta be less than an appt. and if they're decent folks, we know they make plenty of money off of you already and they won't charge you anything.

i don't know how long becomes dangerous. good luck.

 love the poem, Deb! too funny!

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - Should I take him to the vet?

Thanks for your reply. It looks like I gave him some Miralax on Sunday 07/22, but Ginger ate it. I haven't been that good lately at recording stuff, but my notes say I gave him some more Miralax yesterday, and then this morning I know he ate some of it. I mixed up a double dose (1/4 teaspoon) and added that to a double helping of Breffis and he ate half of that.

I'll ask the vet about xrays and GI motility (I'll have to Google that one). So, I should go, I guess.

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - Should I take him to the vet?

Hi Dyana, just catching up here, and I just answered your pm. I wouldn't hesitate to take J.D. in to the Vet. I think I waited too long on Maggie, and her constipation worsened. I kept thinking the Miralax would have helped her but didn't do so. Hope he does surprise you though with some prezzies. I added a lot of water to Maggie's food, too, real soupy.

Thanks. I had responded to you PM and my work computer died before I pressed Submit.,
I now have 15 minutes left of internet time. I'll try to look for the link to Lactaluse or whatever you called it from your yesterday's condo.

I really love this Deb. Thanks :YMHUG:
Maybe if Ginger would stop eating the food with the Miralax in it, J.D. would have more of a response.

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - Should I take him to the vet?

Awww, sorry to hear JD is having problems with poo too.
I was looking up kitty poo dances on google. Feel grateful I am not posting any of them to your condo!
I think the cheer Ella made up for you is going to work best.

It sounds like getting the miralax in JD is difficult because he is not always eating everything? I had the same problem with Latte, which is why we used lactulose. I second, third, fourth (or whatever I am in line) a vet visit. They may need to do xrays, as suggested already. Also, whatever you give him (lactulose, miralax, etc) should be given regularly until the problem is resolved...or long term if needed.

I wish you guys luck today!!!!!

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - thanks

Thanks everyone. I have to get off now. I'll ask about Lactulose and Xrays. Maybe I can cancel when I get home, if I can get J.D. to swear to me that that one over there, in the corner of the box, is his.

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - back from vet

I came home to a log in the litter box and assumed it was J.D.'s because of the coloring  , but took him to the vet anyway. The vet said he is not constipated and his innards feel fine. She did mention that maybe his constant drinking and peeing is not allowing enough water to be in? he bowel area (I'm soooo good with medical terms  ). I did get some Lactulose liquid in a bottle (1 ounce). She (the vet) lit up when I mentioned it and said it would probably work well.
It's really cheap (only $7.00). It says to give 1/2ml (1/2 dropperfull) once daily for seven days, and then once daily every other day (but there is no end date). It said Shake well and refrigerate, but it is crossed out. I asked her if I could have enough to last me for awhile and to take with me on our trips, and she said it had a long shelf life.

So, J.D. was the best patient, again, and is happy to be home. Followed me home from the long walk from where our car is parked, and had a drink of water and a pee, and is currently down in the sacred basement. Shot time is soon, so I'll have to get him up.

I also scheduled rabies shots (1 year) for Saturday August 4th for both cats, and she mentioned something about that would be perfect as they will need their health certificats "especially for going over the state border" within 10 days of travel. We leave for Pittsburgh on August 9th.

Re: 07/25 J.D. AMPS 398 - back from vet

I would see what Carolyn has to say about the dose of Lactulose. Maybe J.D. is on a different poop schedule. If it's a matter of water not getting into his bowel, the Miralax should help. Since it sounds like the Lactulose works on the same principle, it may be helpful, as well.

I took in some poop samples. The two rock hard pieces I found on the floor where he lays by my bed, and the big newly formed log, which she still said was hard.

Anyway, I gave J.D. some R (zero line) as he has been in the reds for awhile (as far as I know), and he just threw up

Re: 07/25 J.D. PMPS 427

Paws crossed that the Lactulose helps JD in the lb. I know how frustrating and worrying it can be. I hope he comes down for you tonight.

Well, I sure hope that was his poo!

I used to get lactulose at Sam's club. We used 1-1.5ml 2x/day. The size bottle I got at Sam's club was enough to last us about 3 months and cost around $7. It was also unflavored. There was a time I got apple flavor from the vet (not requested!) and promptly returned it. I think the .5ml/day is a good place to start! It's a dose to effect medication. If things are not regular with what the vet prescribed than call back and see if you should make changes.

The way I have always understood it is like this...
A cat has difficulty passing stool, for whatever reason (holding, pain, etc). It sits in the bowel, waiting to come out. While it is waiting the water is drawn from the stool making it harder. Obviously the harder it gets, the harder it is to pass. The lactulose helps draw water into the stool, making it easier to pass. Of course once a cat is already impacted, it will not do any good. I do believe miralax works the same way. But, I have never used it. Well..okay, once. I could not get Latte to eat the food it was in, so I offered it in a tbsp or 2 of baby food. The end result was not good because it has to be given with food/water.

Here is some interesting info I found about water in general with cats/consitipation:
Water

Water’s role in constipation or lack of constipation is so frequently misunderstood that its relationship to constipation merits a chapter of its own.

The body needs to be properly hydrated for everything to work well. A dehydrated cat can also have a dehydrated stool. But a well-hydrated cat can still be constipated!

The problem of constipation is not necessarily lack of water in the cat, it is lack of water retention in the stool.

Water retained in the stool is what makes the difference between a softer stool and a harder stool. Proper treatment to prevent constipation involves increasing the water retention capacity of the stool.

Increasing the water retention capacity of the stool does not mean adding water to the cat unless the cat is dehydrated. If, without increasing the capacity of the stool to retain water, extra water is added to an adequately hydrated but constipated cat, that extra water will take the other exit and appear as urine in the litter box, it will not affect the poop.

What helps retain water in the stool?

Increasing water retention of the stool means improving the diet to improve the stool, making the changes necessary to ensure that happens. It may also involve the use of medication in a constipated cat. This is not a simple equation of 'add water' but involves understanding a bit of biochemistry. And that biochemistry involves the next chapter . . .

which is Gut Bacteria and Fiber

Anyway, sounds like J.D. may be on his way to having regular poos. I think he is well deserving of the picture I posted in Ann/Maggie's condo:

Re: 07/25 J.D. PMPS 427

Yay for poo! LL is 2-for2! Zener did get a cisapride script but we never filled it. He's on ondansetron for nausea and Cerenia for motility. He gets miralax 1/16 to 1/8 tsp per day to help with constipation.

Re: 07/25 J.D. PMPS 427

Hi Dyana, sounds like J.D. had a good Vetty report. Maggie is on 1 - 2 ml Lactulose every 8-12 hours as needed. It worked after the third dose. Lots of good info there from Carolyn and her experience with it. Sending poo vines for J.D. :-D

Thanks for posting the info. I went to check to see what was advised and the board went down, so I went ahead and gave him the 1/2ml. J.D. went for a nice walk with me, as it cooled down quite nicely tonight, and then the three of us (I mean the two cats) had 2nd Dinner served outside on the porch (CPC!), and now the kittys are ready to call it a day.

The vet said J.D. was not dehydrated, and I showed her how I tested for hydration and she said it was correct. He drinks a lot of water, it just needs to sit in the bowels more, I guess.

Ni~Ni, and Thanks Again! :YMHUG:

That sounds all good Dyana. I'm glad you all had a nice dinner on the porch and a walk. I hope you see some prezzies tomorrow in the lb! Ni ni to all of you!

I think it was Deb's great cheer that did the trick!

Whatever it was, glad you had some nice prezzies in the LB!

& J.D., better #s please.

Hey, Dyana and J.D. -

Sorry I'm so late getting here. When I stopped by earlier, I read several posts and then something went wonky with my computer and I couldn't finish yours or visit anybody else. Then, later tonight I couldn't get onto the board - don't know if it was down or the problem was on my end. Anyhoo -

Glad to hear J.D. had a good vetty visit. I hope he's well on his way to regularity! Poor fella, you know it's a miserable feeling

Sleep well -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)
