Please review his blood sugars. I have tried increasing in small amounts...still upper 200 and low 300's. Lantus is only reducing him very slowly. See morning sugars, and then like 2 or 3 hours later and see sugar on dropping minimally after eating and shots. I am only feeding him at +10 after PM about 8:00 AM, I test and feed. Then at 10:30 I test and shoot. Then I try to watch how his sugar comes down. Because of schedule conflicts I have not been able to do this many days in a row...so at 8:00 pm I will also test and feed, and then check blood sugar with shot at 10:30.

I am trying to figure what else to do.

I went from a fat 1 unit to a 1.5 again...so a week at 1.5 to watch to see if it comes down.

He wakes me up to eat. I test then as it is a fasting one..but it is too early to give his shot because it isn't the same time every morning. I have him at 10:30 am/pm for shots but he cant wait that long to eat as he gets sick

Great to see the additional tests that makes it much easier to figure out what the insulin is or isn't doing in Kitty Boo's body.

The increase looks like it was a good call. With Lantus you're not going to see immediate results to a dose increase it's going to take 3-5 days for his shed to adjust. So since you just increased last night I'd hold that dose for a week while testing like you have been and see where he settles on this dose before we look at increasing again.

The other thing is how old is your insulin you're using? If it's reasonably fresh then we just need to find the correct dose.

I feed my cat every 6 hours. She get hungry pretty fast as well, but since there is only 6 hours between meals she is ok. I have an automatic feeder for night time andwhen i am at work.

I don't have an automatic feeder. I feed him at 10:00 or 10:30 and then 8:00 the next morning. My other cats are on the same schedule..I used to put dry food at night down for the kitties, but Boo can't eat the dry food, so I give him a whole can of food before bedtime. I also have to feed him at anywhere between 6 and 8 in the evening or he gets sick and start vomiting clear liquid.

The insulin was opened June 1st. I know with me it only lasts 45 days..not sure for a cat..how long can you use the pen once you begin using it?

Emma

Well I'm shooting two and I use Levemir not Lantus but I use a pen until I can't draw a dose anymore. Which varies but I get about two months out of one pen here.

Thanks Mel. Is there anything stating how long you can use one pen? I only have Kitty boo and he was like only on .75 then 1 then 1.5 so of course with the excess that is shot out due to getting it right, a pen could last like 6 months or more? Should it only be used a certain amount of time?

Also I began shooting Boo at 8:00 and feeding him now. Yesterday he did well and at 1:30 he was at 182...But I had to leave, to take Eric to work and then pick up the baby at day care, but when I tested at 5:00 he was up to 293...fed him 1/2 can at 5 and then I had a birthday dinner and didn't get back home at 8:00 to shoot and feed...was afraid of this when I moved the time...so checked it at 10:00 and he was at 358! So fed him and shot at 10:00 and then at 8:00 this morning it was 308...fed him and shot and then at 11:30 it was 374...Will continue to check it today, but sometimes I feel as if it isn't working much.

I've used all of my pens to the last drop. That's anywhere between 2-4 months depending on dosage. As long as you keep it refrigerated, you should get the full use out of the pens. With the vials, most last at least 4-6 months or longer (about halfway through the vial).

You are supposed to keep them refrigerated? Even after opening? I am a diabetic and I keep them in the fridge until I open them but then I keep them at room temp. they are supposed to last 45 days...of course mine I use too fast..but Kitty boo's I have thrown them away after 45 days.

Emma

Yes, because we use such small dosages on our cats, refrigerating helps them last well past expiration.
