Good morning all,

Zener's beans are home and he was very happy to see us. He slept in the bed last night until 3:30 and then demanded petting off and on until we normally get up. I think he is glad we are home, we sure are! Our pet sitter did a good job, but his BG was high and up and down while we were gone. Poor guy seems like he is always up and down, yesterday was a good example from 498 at PSAM to 90 at +6, totally freaking me out. This morning his PSAM was 233, lowest PSAM we have had since on lanus, I think. I am keeping everything crossed that he is more level today. nailbite_smile

07/13/11 Zener Alpha Trak
PSAM 233 1.75 u ate 1 oz of wet food immediately before and after shot

This will be Zener's 12th continuous cycle at 1.75 u, but we were away for much of this time, he ate primarily dry food for the sitter and his numbers weren't that great. I am assuming we should stay the course until we see some flattening of his curve, am I correct?

We noticed this morning while watching him walk in his back yard that he seems to not be up on his front paw tippy toes but more flat on his front paws. He has cerebellar hypoplasia so his walk has always been a bit different, but today it is noticeably different. He may have been like this yesterday when we got home, but we really noticed it watching him walk on unlevel surfaces outside. I wondered if this could be diabetic neuropathy and if ordering the type of B12 I've read about on this list might be helpful. Any advice would be appreciated and thanks!

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSAM 233;+2 410A Trak wrist walking; dose

Okay, here we go on the rainbow roller coaster today.

07/13/11 Zener Alpha Trak
PSAM 233 1.75 u ate 1 oz of wet food immediately before and after shot; ate 1 oz FF at +1
+2 410

Having trouble getting Zener back on his wet food diet after our travels, he ate a HC fancy feast chicken florentine about 20 minutes before I took his +2 BG, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised to see the increase. I guess I should be grateful I can get him to eat wet food at all. Poor guy, feels like we can never get his BG stable.

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSAM 233;+2 410A Trak wrist walking; dose

I think you got a double whammy on that test, the higher carb food and 20 minutes before the test. Unless I'm monitoring a really low number I always try to have at least an hour after food for a test.

Was he eating canned well before you left? The dry food could definitely be the cause of the higher numbers. I've never had to deal w/ neuropathy, but that sounds like typical symptoms. I hope someone w/ more experience w/ it comes along soon. I do know that the treatment is methyl b-12, I think a preferred brand os Xobaline.

He has been so up and down that I was a little anxious about the PSAM, and of course, was encouraging him to eat with his insulin too. Guess I'm the problem with the high BG!

We had gotten him to eat a low carb canned food before we left, but it has been a struggle and sometimes required appetite stimulants. While we were away our pet sitter was working during the day and not able to be as persistent on "pushing food" on the poor guy. So, he ate mostly his dry food and I was advised that any food was better than no food, so glad that at least he was eating something. We are working to get him back on the wet food now. I read about Zobaline on the message board so have ordered some.

The poor guy was diagnosed in March and we've yet to get him regulated. He was on Humulin N first, and now Lantus for over a month and still having trouble getting him regulated.

Thanks for the information!

Re: 07/13/11 ZenerPSAM 233;+2 410;+3 413 ATrak wrist walking

Checked again at +3 and no real change.

07/13/11 Zener Alpha Trak
PSAM 233 1.75 u ate 1 oz of wet food immediately before and after shot; ate 1 oz FF at +1
+2 410
+3 413

We are so frustrated with his lack of progress and are feeling discouraged, and now he seems to have something new - wrist walking. Will we ever get the poor guy regulated?

Re: 07/13/11 ZenerPSAM 233;+2 410;+3 413 ATrak wrist walking

I am so sorry you are having problems. It will get better. It will just take you awhile to get back into the routine after being gone. It is a marathon, not a sprint so I hope you have plenty of patience pants.   I have worn through a few pairs already.

Some people use salmon or chicken dust on the wet food to get the kitties to eat it. Tarragon was a dry addicted cat and I thought we would never get him switched over. I used tuna juice and boiled chicken breasts. He also like boiled hamburger. You will just have to try a few things until you find that magic ingredient that Zener loves.

I don't know about the walking issues. We didn't have to deal with any of that but someone who did will be along shortly.

Hang in there! Hope you have a great evening!

Re: 07/13/11 ZenerPSAM 233;+2 410;+3 413 ATrak wrist walking

Thanks for the support Melissa. I will have to find my patience pants, love that! I must be wearing my cranky pants today :YMSIGH: And I will keep repeating to myself "it's a marathon, not a sprint". Those little things help me when we are having an especially trying day. The best thing I have found so far to get him to eat is a probiotic called fortiflora. He was a picky eater before we started all this. Our other cat, Tillie, who is not diabetic loves all the food experimentation. She likes everything so far. Thanks again!

Latest BG values:
07/13/11 Zener Alpha Trak
PSAM 233 1.75 u ate 1 oz of wet food immediately before and after shot; ate 1 oz FF at +1
+2 410 ate freeze dried chicken

+6 359 freeze dried chicken

Re: 07/13/11 ZenerPSAM 233;+2 410;+3 413+6 359 ATrakWristWal

Crushing some of the dry stuff into dust and sprinkling it on the LC food may help. And don't forget the FortiFlora.

Re: 07/13/11 ZenerPSAM 233;+2 410;+3 413+6 359 ATrakWristWal

Thanks Sienne! I just got a new order of fortiflora in the mail today, it seems to help the most. The dry dust from the freeze dried chicken treats doesn't seem to work for him. I tried a little Friskies turkey pate today and he seemed to like it, now if we just get him to stick with it.

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284 ATrak Wrist Walking ?

Unable to get a +9 or later because of volunteer work and errands. Just home in time for PSPM, feed and shoot. Here are the latest values and the day's summary:

07/13/11 Zener Alpha Trak
PSAM 233 1.75 u ate 1 oz of wet food immediately before and after shot; ate 1 oz FF at +1
+2 410 ate freeze dried chicken
+3 413
+6 359 freeze dried chicken
PSPM 284 fed 1 oz of Friskies turkey pate (and he liked it)

With the exception of the +2 and +3 that I got shortly after food on board (I was so busy trying to get him to eat wet food, I didn't think!), he has been out of the red today. Using fortiflora on wet food to entice him. He did a little better with his eating today. No dry food, all wet food. We have ordered the Zobaline, and will start him on that when it arrives. Poor guy, as if he doesn't have enough to deal with already.

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284 ATrak Wrist Walking ?

I will send a video of Moonie walking on her hocks, as she has had neuropathy for a long time--
Xobaline is very good, Moonie didnt like the flavor, but it does work.
I have some extra xobaline if you should need it--
It should help to some degree, Moonie jumps pretty high for a kitty with Neuropathy, You'll see!
She can walk on her toes, but prefers her hocks(back leg wrists) and really can Move!
You have enough on your plate, it will help Zener, just takes several weeks to see a difference.
Ni Ni!

Thanks Roni, I would love to see it. Zener has cerebellar hypoplasia so has always had a unique walk with his back legs, so it's tough to see him losing function in his front ones. Would love to see your Moonie doing her thing!

I just ordered some and it should be here in a few days. I'll let you know how things go with it, and if it works I would be happy to take the extra you have off your hands. It's been such a struggle to get him on wet food, so I will be anxious to see if he can handle the flavor.

I look forward to seeing Moonie jumping over the cow, or should it be the moon?

Thanks for the information! :YMHUG:

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284; 2.5 115 ATrak Big Drop help

Good lordy, it's been a crazy 2 days! Just checked Zener's BG at +2.5 hoping I was going to get to bed and BIG surprise - his BG is 115!

07/13/11 Zener Alpha Trak
PSAM 233 1.75 u ate 1 oz of wet food immediately before and after shot; ate 1 oz FF at +1
+2 410 ate freeze dried chicken
+3 413
+6 359 freeze dried chicken
PSPM 284 fed 1 oz of Friskies turkey pate (and he liked it)
+2.5 115, fed 0.5 oz Friskies, 0.5 oz HC fancy feast chicken florentine, 3 semi soft treats

Guess I'll be up for awhile...

Any ideas why we are on such a rainbow roller coaster? This is his 13th dose at 1.75 u, with a few before that interrupted by the pet sitter giving him 2.0 u one time. 4th cycle on this dose since we got home. He has been fully on wet food today.

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284; 2.5 115 ATrak Big Drop help

This is just my input, and I am not an expert. When you see Zener is dropping try not to give too much food at one time. This might cause him to get full and not want HC when he most needs to.

What we newbies are advised to do is to give small amounts of HC gravy. Open the can and squeeze down the gravy with a spoon. Give small amounts, like 1 Tbsp or 2 at a time and check in 20 to 30 minutes.

Hope he surfs and lets you go to sleep. :-D

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284; 2.5 115 ATrak Big Drop help

Thanks Natalia! I probably panicked since he dropped so fast and we are using an Alpha Trak meter. Just checked his +3 and he is at 130 BG. I gave him a little bit more HC, only a teaspoon. I'll check again in another 30 minutes. We have been on a roller coaster the past two days.

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284; 2.5 115; 3 130 ATrak Big Drop h

I can complete understand the panicky state. You are doing great.

I wouldn't give more HC. :-D

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284; 2.5 115; 3 130 ATrak Big Drop h

Thanks Natalia! Zener is a very handsome and very sweet fellow. He takes all this in stride while his bean panics and frets. I gave him a little more gravy after I did the +3, and promptly set my alarm for the wrong time. It just went off and I got a +5, he is now at 157. Gave him a little of his regular low carb wet food. I'll set my alarm to get another BG in another hour.

Re: 07/13/11 Zener PSPM 284; +2.5 115;+3 130;+5 157;+6 148 A

Still seeming to be steady at +6, will set alarm for +8 just to be sure.

+3 130, fed a little HC FF
+5 157, fed a little LC friskies with HC gravy
+6 148, fed a little LC friskies with HC gravy

He is acting fine, cuddled up on the bed and wishing I would quit waking him up.
