I hope J.D. comes out of this bounce by PMPS. He ate fine yesterday, and we went for several walks during the day.
I did wake up in the middle of the night to not find him in my bed or his bed next to my bed, and got up to find him laying on the bathroom floor, which was strange. Once I got him up, he went back to his bed for the rest of the night.

He has eaten his 1st Breffis, and I gave him some Pepcid and Cypro this morning. I did not give him any medications yesterday because of the bloodwork. I hope his bloodwork is fine. Crossed Fingers...

He is now back in his bed after a bit of time spent out on the deck. And Ginger is laying on the floor in the bedroom, which she has been doing a lot of lately (normally, she's always up somewhere). I'm about to go get them and take them out for a walk, and then get ready for tbp.

Re: 07/09 J.D. AMPS 438

Morning Dyana,
I have fingers and paws crossed and loading up good blood work vines for J.D. And then all of it once more so he clears his bounce today. Enjoy your walk this morning. You three have such nice time together before you have to head for tbp.
have a a great day.
hugs and scritches from us.

Re: 07/09 J.D. AMPS 438

I've noticed that when it's really hot, they like a cool tile floor even when the place has ac. Poe has a tendency to just plop down and stretch out on the floor either in the kitchen or the bathroom. It's slippery too so he can stretch and slide better lol

Hoping J.D. comes down smooth and safe for you.

Have a good day :-D

Re: 07/09 J.D. AMPS 438

Hi guys .. fingers crossed for excellent blood work on J.D. .. isn't it funny how some cat's crave cool floors when it's hot .. and then there's mocha .. who searches out the hottest spot in the house and sleeps for hours ohmygod_smile have a great day!

Re: 07/09 J.D. AMPS 438 - Some Bloodwork Results

From TANYA'S COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO FELINE CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

"BUN rises in CKD because the kidneys are no longer able to excrete it efficiently; but it can also rise for other reasons, such as dehydration, urethral obstruction (a blockage which prevents a cat from urinating, more common in male cats) or gastro-intestinal bleeding. It is also affected by both diet (since it is a by-product of the breakdown of protein) and stress."

The BUN doesn't look great - is anything else happening? Dehydration?

Re: 07/09 J.D. AMPS 438 - Some Bloodwork Results

Dyana --

Do you know if the vet did a specific gravity? If it's normal, it's likely that the elevated BUN is due to dehydration. If the specific gravity is low (i.e., dilute urine) it's more than likely that the BUN is due to fluid loss from J.D.'s diabetes. Some additional clues may relate to what the electrolyte levels (e.g., low sodium or potassium, high calcium) look like.

Re: 07/09 J.D. AMPS 438 - Some Bloodwork Results

It looks like you've got some good input on J.D.'s bloodwork. I hope he cleared the bounce today.

Re: 07/09 J.D. AMPS 438 - Some Bloodwork Results

Hi Dyana,

It is so nervewracking having blood work done. Can't comment on the results, except I know that Phosphorus # is beautiful!

Hope it cools off a bit for you guys - and that JD and Ginger enjoyed their walk.

Thinking about you guys!

Re: 07/09 J.D. PMPS 546

I don't like to give J.D. R in the middle of the work week, because a lot of times it affects his next day's cycle, and I do want him going below 40 when I'm not home, hoping he'll wake up to eat. But, I just had to give him some R tonight.

I'm going to go pick up the paperwork from the bloodwork now.

He is drinking like crazy and peeing a lot. Poop is fine.

brb.

And, I didn't get a USG this time, because I figured his urine would be super delute anyway from the high BGs and the extra drinking and peeing that causes.

His USG on 03/22/13 was 1.020 and on 04/27/13 it was 1.021

Re: 07/09 J.D. PMPS 546

I'm not sure what "R" is, but I'm thinking it must be the fast-acting insulin? If so, yea, I sure don't blame you for not wanting to give it when you can't monitor and test.

I did get that automatic feeder today. I've been setting it and watching it work, and so far it seems to be ok. The real test will come tomorrow when I set it up for use.

C'mon J.D. come down for Mama Bean...tell Mr. Liver everything will be just fine

I did the best I could copying and pasting the results, and color coding for readability.

His BUN history is:
32 on 11/25/2011
38 on 02/11/2012
49 on 03/20/2012
67 on 06/01/2012
50 on 10/15/2012
45 on 01/21/2013
53 on 03/22/2013
53 on 07/08/2013
The vet said the BUN was 50 on the phone today, but he must have mistaken because the IDEXX paperwork says 53.

The only other USG I think I remember was a 1.023 once, and I don't remember when. It must have been some time ago.

Any thoughts, if you can read this mess?

Re: 07/09 J.D. PMPS 546, +2 433 - All Bloodwork Posted

Dyana

Just have a quick moment as Mike is waiting on me to open my presents but the labwork indicates to me that JD is in early CKD. I don't think his elevated BUN is just from dehydration. Although the normal range for creat is up to 2.3, if there is elevated BUN and the USG is showing dilute (which his does), then 1.6 or above for creat indicates early CKD; it's not a number that you would start giving fluids for yet especially if JD is drinking well on his own. His phosphorus and potassium are GREAT. I think this bloodwork is really, really nice for an 18 year old cat! Great job!!

I would make sure I feed lower phosphorus foods and you might be already. It's good to be proactive on phosphorus as the BUN and creat come up a bit. I would love to see this bloodwork for Gus!!!

Re: 07/09 J.D. PMPS 546, +2 433 - All Bloodwork Posted

That's just the thing. I have mentioned to my vet before about a phosphorus binder, but the vet says J.D.'s phosphorus is fine and to just keep feeding him what I'm feeding him. He only gets Fancy Feast which are some of the highest on Dr. Lisa's list for phosphorus. To me his phosphorus is fine, but I can try a can or two of lower phosphorus food, but he pretty much just likes Fancy Feast. And some of the fish flavored FFs are astronimical in phos.

So, his Calicium is okay?

I have to go get the kitties in from outside as it is dark and bed time. Thanks for your help.

Hi Dyana,

Good luck with all the blood work results. Looks like J.D. Is sliding down nicely. :-D

Re: 07/09 J.D. PMPS 546, +2 433 - All Bloodwork Posted

Hi Dyana--

No advice here on J.D.'s labs...

OT: this reply is my 4000th post  gosh, where does the time go!?!?!?

Re: 07/09 J.D. PMPS 546, +2 433 - All Bloodwork Posted

Dyana:

The only thing that really stands out is the BUN. CK is creatinine kinase. A low level is not significant. Ditto on the A/G (albumin to globulin) ratio. While the A/G ratio may be indicative of issues with protein metabolism, total protein and individual levels of albumin and globulin are fine.

I was going to suggest asking Marje about the BUN level but I saw she posted ahead of me.

J.D. could use some vines.

He hasn't been acting himself so much. Although, his fur is really soft, so I don't know if he went down lower today.
He might have a flare up of pancreatitis. He ate a little more than half of his 1st Dinner, and eventually finished it.
He ate half of his 2nd Dinner, and then later ate a bit more. At +4, I tried to give him some more food, and he refused. I eventually got some kibble of YA in him, and then he got up off the couch and was licking his lips while heading to the litter box. I quickly put a paper under him and he threw up all the food he has eaten this evening. I had given him some Ondansetron at around +3, because he just wasn't eating that much.
He then paced around a little bit, and then was heading to the litter box again and peed on the carpet. Ketones - Negative, Thank God. I just feel sorry for him. I hope he feels better soon.

I'll wait a bit and offer him some baby food.

If you have any vines to spare, I would appreciate some for J.D.

:-|

Thank you, Josie. Hugs.

He threw up everything that was in his stomach at +4.

He ate about 1/2 jar of warmed up baby food at +4.5.
Hoping he'll keep it down.

I plugged in his heating pad in his bed. It's very low heat. He seems to like it.

+3.25 364
+5 319

I'm need to go to sleep. I'll get up in a half hour and feed him another 1/2 jar.

Mega healing/Feel Better vines for J.D. Hoping he keeps his food down, rests good, and wakes up and feels his regular self, Dyana.

Thank you Jane and Mariko ...where's that hugging smilie..

He is up and about. Just went and got a sip of water and is going back to his bed, nope, now he's walking around. He just looks a little disoriented. A little wobbily on his feet. We went for a walk earlier this evening and he was walking much better. I was realized again how much faster he walks when I have treats in my hand.

Off to bed for a bit.. Thanks for the vines. It means the world to me.

Dyana --

Could you check with Anne or Liz about when they give Zener his ondansatron? I'm wondering if it needs to be given on an empty stomach and you need to wait a while to kick in before you feed.

Thanks Sienne. I may be doing this wrong, but when he had pancreatitis over a year ago, he was on pepcid and ondansetron and sometimes cypro for a long long time, like 6 months. Every time I thought he was eating better, I would try to take him off of the ondansetron, and in a day or two, he would be picky with his food again. Now, I just give it to him once in awhile, when he's off his feed, which isn't too often (Knock On Wood).
Maybe he's having a flare. He's laying at my feet right now, while I type at my desk.

Please feel better, J.D.

Thanks Deborah.

Oops, I meant to reply to Sienne, that I used to just put the pepcid and onda in a pill pocket and either give it to him 30 minutes before eating or right before his breakfast.

Sending tons of vines for J.D. Poor guy, it's hard when they don't feel good. We give ondansetron and Zantac BID, every day. We give 1 mg Cerenia 3 times per week and cypro as needed.
Liz
ETA: We give the Zantac and ondansetron right after we test and before feeding and shot. We give the Cerenia about +8 to +10 as Zener seems to need some time between that pill and eating.

((Dyana)) Piling on some more stomach settling vines for JD. Paws crossed the BF stays down. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I hope J.D.is feeling better this morning. Maybe there is something in the air because Julia puked a little bit in two different rooms this morning. I'm sending stomach settling vines to J.D. Hopefully his (and your) day will get better!
