It has been another busy day at the office. I was able to get home at lunch to get a +6.5, but I wasn't really happy about the number. Also during lunch I called the vet that we wanted to check out and possibly have the dental at. They wouldn't be able to get us in for a general appointment until next week. And they don't even have a dental x-ray machine, so that is out. Then I called the vet that we went to last week in hopes that they might have a dental x-ray machine, but they don't either. I just don't think the smaller vet offices that are more convenient are going to have one.

So we ended up back at the old vets office even though the doctor that we really like isn't there any longer. I was really not sure I wanted to do that, but I knew that they had the equipment and the staffing to hand an emergency if something should come up.

I took Sammy in this evening specifically to see if they would prescribe an antibiotic. I don't know if it will help, but it always has in the past. We will see. We saw a new doctor, one we had not seen before and he was very attentive and helpful, albeit YOUNG! I had called the doctor we like and asked for a recommendation, but all of the doctors she recommended were not working this evening. She recommended doctors that had been in practice a bit longer and who had some experience with diabetic kitties. She knows Sammy is a difficult case and didn't know if one of the younger graduates would know what to do. Although, I am not really going to the vet for dosing advice, I get great advice here for that, I just need the vet for all other health aspects and medications.

Also, we have scheduled a dental, but they are pretty booked for dentals and the first available was the Monday the 20th, but I would an appointment later in the week so that I would at least have a couple days over the weekend to monitor him before having to go back to work and the first Friday available wasn't until July 31st. We went ahead and booked it, if nothing else to hold the spot. I might actually call them and ask to be put on a waiting list for a sooner Friday if they happen to have a cancelation, but at least we know he will have his teeth cleaned in less than a month. And I have a month to except the cost that I am going to have to shell out for said dental.

Anyway, they recommended a specific pain medication and I wanted to make sure it was a good one. I think I have seen others using it, but I have no clue how to spell it. is sounds like bupreorphine, or something like that. Is that what Sammy should get for pain before and after the dental?

Neko gets buprenorphine (we also call it bupe for short form) daily for her arthritis. Does the vet think Sammy has pain now? Just wondering why he'd have it before the operation. It's a good choice for after if he has any extractions.

I don't know if you've considered the option, but there are some dental vet specialists. They cost a bit more, sometimes have a longer lead time to get in, but they are used to working with older problem cats and dogs and usually do extra monitoring during the dental procedure. I went to a dental specialist for Neko's last two dentals, because of her heart murmur. Your regular vet would need to refer you do one if you wanted to go that route.

Buprenorphine is what my vet has always given me for any of my cats that had to have an extraction. I've always used it after the dental though. Not before.
