Bandit had a long green/low blue streak on 7/3 after which she has been stuck in higher numbers (200-300). I understand that bounces can take up to 6 cycles to clear, but I am wondering if there are other reasons for the high numbers.

(a) She developed a crusty bald patch at the base of one ear, which the vet said seemed fungal and we have started applying clotrimazole (1%) ointment on it from 7/1. Also added Neosporin to it for a couple of days. Could either elevate numbers? She did go low on 7/3 though.

(b) We also gave her a monthly application of Selamectin (Revolution in the US) spot-on 7/4

Could either of these be responsible for the higher numbers?

Lastly, we have begun to feed her Dr. Elsey's chicken variant which is ~5% carbs at shot time and around +2/+3 to see if we can prevent those dives at onset. Feed Young Again during the rest of the cycle. If one were to assume that Dr. E's is indeed 4% higher in carbs than YA, could that be a reason for the higher numbers?

How do I check if the higher numbers are due to the Dr. E's? Would a +1 test after a meal f Dr. E's vs a +1 test after a meal of YA tell me that? Or do we completely discontinue Dr. E's for a few days (how long) and see if that affects numbers?

Tested her 1 hour after giving her some Dr. Elsey's today. She was flat. 286 at +4 vs 282 at +3.
Will do the same test with YA tomorrow to see if she is lower rather than flat.

I doubt the Dr. Elsey's is materially different in carb from the YA.

Infection/inflammation can also impact numbers.

@Wendy&Neko I tried the same food bump testing in the PM cycle, *before onset*. She went from 229 at PMPS to 284 at +2 after eating some Dr. Elsey's.
Is a 55 point jump at the end of a cycle a lot or is that pretty much par for the course?

Will try this with YA tomorrow and see if there is a difference. Am I going about it the right way?

283 @ +4!
I have no idea what's happening here.

Going to discontinue Dr. Elsey's and application of the clotrimazole ointment from tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

Try changing one thing at a time, or you won't know what the solution is. Be patient. ;)

Thanks :-) I thought of that too.
Will stop the clotrimazole ointment and see. I suspect Bandit is one of those cats who is allergic to Neomycin so putting Neosporin on the ear patch for a couple of days didn't help either.

Somehow, I don't think it is the Dr. Elsey's food. Is a 55 point jump at end of the cycle from food a lot?

We have been on 1.25 units for 6 days now. Should I take the increase to 1.5 at the end of the week? I realize that she looked like she wanted to go to 1 unit before this started and will probably fall hard on 1.5 units - if and when this resolves. But I am uncomfortable with keeping her on high numbers.

Though the insulin doesn't seem to be making much of a difference! Its like she is on a 6 day bounce!

No, feeding after nadir can shorten duration and cause numbers to jump. I'd try to feed most of the food before or at nadir if you can.

Does this apply to even really low carb food - like 1% or less? What does one do if kitty is hungry and wants a snack towards the end of the cycle?

@Wendy&Neko please ignore the above question. Bandit is at 156 at +6 today :-)
We stopped the clotrimazole ointment. Continued Dr.Elsey's - in fact, she had it at +2 and +3.5 and still the dip in numbers.

Yay! Thank you! :bighug:
