Out shopping I picked up greenies pill pockets. To my surprise Ben loves them. When I got home I broke one in half and rolled into a ball, he ate them like a new treat. When it came time for me to pill him, I broke one in half rolled one into a ball the other I rolled around the Denamarin pill. I gave him the plain pill pocket first, he seemed to chew it, I was OH OH. I gave him the Denamarin wrapped with the PP, he chewed a couple times, then swallowed the whole thing with pill inside.

I am so very happy pill pockets worked for Ben
He's doing good I just have a hard time separating his boredom from him being sick. A great lady here sent him some milk rings, springs, and a cute starfish he loves 'em all. And I got him a new Da Bird and donated his old one to a friend's kitty, it is 13 years old. Worth the ~$10 for sure. We played for a long while 'til it was catnap time.

Years ago my Boxer Pinky would chew the pill pocket and spit out the pill,
she WAS a pill for sure

After bursting my bubble (lol) of course I had to research what I got myself into

I got a BG +4 after pill pocket. PMBG is 73.
I will continue with BG readings but, I think the HC pill pocket is better for him than me pilling him. The pill pockets are 1 gram or 0.03 oz each, which IMO 1/day is not too bad where a can of food is 85 grams. He gags every time and it's no fun for either of us.

I sure appreciate your feedback as I now know. I will use the smallest amount I can get away with then give him a bite of turkey for loving the PP

I agree. I was wondering the same thing. Might be alright for a pill a day. But just wanted to warn you that they are high carb so please use as minimally as possible!

I so appreciate you bringing this to my attention. Now I have most all the information on PP I can be especially diligent with the amount used. Funny thing I was thinking the same about the Denamarin pills themselves.
I have also decided against adding Young Again kibble to Ben's diet. He is at the point he is getting all his moisture from his food, not drinking water, and peeing about 3 times/day. I am afraid adding any dry food to his diet will rob his system of needed moisture as he will not drink water to compensate. I KNOW how hard it is taking care of a very elderly cat with CKD for years. I don't want to have Ben dealing with that before he is 17 or 18. Old Groovy Cat would not eat canned food and was eating IAMS 'til the ripe old age of 17 until I was well educated in the Yahoo group feline CRF. Being so sick Groovy transitioned to wet food easily. Ben always had wet with a side of higher quality dry food until I took it away completely June 13th. So, I think it is in Ben's best interest for health reasons not to put it back.

Good thinking. If he is eating canned, better not to introduce kibble at all.

I have seen some cases where removing kibble makes a big (positive) difference to BG. Of course, some cats do very well (in terms of BG) on LC kibble. So it's ECID. But there is no getting away from the fact that they need water and water-depleted diets - no matter how great the quality of the food - is not good for them.
