So I came home yesterday to two piles of Tray's hairballs and 1 pile of food vomit. No litter box action, so off to the vet for an enema. Thought that may have helped but this morning, Tray threwup again, some bile, a little food and another hairball. I'm getting very frustrated with the vet. I've spent over $1000.00 in the past few weeks and Tray is still throwing up!
Could it be the meds causing all this? I've never had problems with hairballs before or vomiting. I'm scared and going broke!

Tray seems fine otherwise, playing this morning and eating normally.

Sorry you are so frustrated Iorwen.....I would be too with a high vet bill and no answers.

I am not familiar with the medication that Tray is on.....is it an AB?
Have you tried adding a little Miralax to Tray's food to help with the constipation?

Putty has had a lot more hairballs recently which may be the time of year.....hairball season?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you're having such a go with this puking business. HOw frustrating!
Fax was barfing up a lot after meals. I eventually had to start feeding him on a dinner plate (with the food spread around as much as possible) and also I have put two phone books under his plate to raise it up. This helped within one meal for the barfing to stop. Not sure if this helps your situation or not..
Best of luck

Yes he's on ABs he was on clavamox when all the vomitting began so we switched him on Monday to Convenia. I know people here don't like it but he's had it before with no problem.

He eats on a plate not a bowl. I'll try raising the dish tonight and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip.

I'm sorry Tray is still having such a hard time! I can't remember, why is he on ABs? Since he's not pooping, have you considered the possibility of an intestinal blockage? Or maybe he's developed a food sensitivity? There are certain foods that my Zen will barf up within a few minutes of eating, but then he'll go about his day as if nothing happened.

It's definitely hairball season around here...it may just be that Tray is working through a build up of them.

I hope he's feeling better soon....

It looks like vomiting is the most common side effect of Convenia. If there's a vet school anywhere near you, I'd find out if there's a veterinary pharmacist you can speak with. Check on the side effects and whether it's safe to use an anti-emetic with Convenia. If it is, find out what the vet pharmacist would recommend and then call your vet.

The hair balls probably don't help.

Is he getting the cerenia? Did he keep it down?

You can get them to show you how to do an enema at home if you need to. Start the pumpkin and the Restoralax now. I think its 1/8th of a teaspoon throughout the day. Not all at once and you can increase from there. Check out felineconstipation.org.

We learned how to use a specific infant enema for Maverick as vet visits just stressed him out too much we had to learn how to do this and suppositories at home. I had to add back in his old kibble as it was the switch to wet food that caused it. But also caused his diabetes to return.

The hairball medicine can help lubricate things also.

Sending hugs Iorwen. Its just a little bump in the road.

I would definitely start some pumpkin today. That might help, especially since he has had an enema.

Here is the info I have bookmarked about it. However, Karrie says to do 1/8 tsp to start out with, which might be a good idea to ease them into it. I do the 1 tsp with each meal.:

One of the best ways to deal with constipation is to prevent it. A very healthy and easy way to do that is to incorporate pumpkin into your pet's food. Yes, that's right - I said PUMPKIN. The simple fact is that pumpkin is a great source of fiber and has a high water content. Both of which contribute to keeping your pet's bowl movements regular. You'll want to make sure that you use the pureed canned pumpkin, or you can puree your own using a fresh pumpkin. Either way however don't buy pumpkin pie filling by mistake; it's definitely not the same thing. The following scale will help you determine how much you should mix into every meal.

Pets who weigh less than 15 pounds = 1 - 2 teaspoons
Pets who weigh 15 - 35 pounds = 1 - 2 tablespoons

I am so sorry that you are having to go through this Iorwen. I can totally relate to the vet bill and getting nothing for your money. Good luck!

Gosh guys .. I am sorry you are dealing with this .. No wonder you are scared! I hope that tray starts feeling better soon .. Sienne had a good idea .. is there a vet school nearby?

Oh dear, I am so sorry Tray is still throwing up. Pumpkin definitely helped Simon and also I give him 1/4 pepcid when he has had numerous hairballs. That seems to help, too. I hear you on the vet expense. It is hard to keep paying all that money when you can't get any answers.

I also, like Karrie, gave my cat Cokie(GA) enemas at home because she needed them frequently because of lots of blockage issues. It seems scary at first but is really easy once you get used to it. I also saved tons of money by dealing with it at home instead of the vets.

Good idea about talking to someone at a vet school. I hope you get some answers today and that poor Tray gets to feeling better soon.

Sorry you are having a rough go. It can be so frustrating when you are trying everything you can and arent getting the results.

I too have had much success with Pumpkin and constipation. I for certain think it's worth a shot.

Hang in there.

Iorwen, I sure hope that Tray will be feeling better today. Sending healing vines to your boy. I am so sorry about the vomiting, constipation, and hairballs. It could be a gigantic hairball that is causing the problem, and hopefully the pumpkin remedy will help to get the intestines moving so that the hairball will get pushed out.
Sienne's advice is good and you would certainly be able to get in touch with a vet pharmacist in a big city like Toronto.
Good luck and stay positive!

So sorry that Tray isn't feeling well, Iorwen! I would definitely try the pumpkin, and maybe add some probiotics? Is Tray cool with grooming? maybe a daily brushing would help cut down on the hairball pukus. ((hugs)) hang in there! Fingers and paws crossed that you get things squared away soon!

Tray is cool with grooming and demands his brushing/combing daily. I use a furmanator which works great. The vet gave me some hairball remedy which she also claims works as a laxative and also recommended the pumpkin which I started this morning. She also suspects a large hairball may be the cause of the constipation. I sure hope that's all it is.

Hi Iorwen,
maybe you can list the meds he is currently on....sorry if you have done so before....

Rocket has been on Convenia in the past and he has not had any interaction with the ondansetron or pepcid as he gets these two every 12 hrs....and has gotten them now for over 2 yrs....

raising the bowl/dish does help....but if you were giving pepcid and then you stopped...perhaps you need to make it a daily part of his life routine...similar to insulin...
