Good morning everyone!

Today is the last OTJ trial day and Juno's AMBG was 81 in the morning :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:.

Overall, I think Juno looks pretty good given his age, but his muscles in the hind legs are not as strong as they were before the diabetes and he hasn't recovered much of the lost weight. It's also true that in the Summer cats tend to eat less and he's a long-haired cat. I do worry sometimes when he makes a funny breathing sound when he's laying down. It is an occasional, not continuous sound, and he doesn't seem to have shortness of breath. Maybe is an age thing. Would you recommend a vet visit? He gets so stressed when he needs to visit the vet.

I am curious about your post because Billie also is a noisy breather sometimes. What does Juno sound like? Billie's sound just sounds like noisy breathing - a little whistley and breathy, but not wheezy. It's happens sometimes when she is lying down relaxing. She also sometimes snores when she is asleep. Like with Juno, it doesn't happen all the time, and she doesn't seem to have shortness of breath.

I have asked my vet about this, and she said that it could be a nasopharyngeal polyp - a benign mass. They can be surgically removed, but she said that is not necessary unless they show signs of difficulty breathing, excessive sneezing, nasal discharge, or anything else that concerns you. She didn't actually check to see if a polyp is there. I guess from what I told her, she didn't think it was something to worry about for now. She also said that some cats are just noisier than others, and it could be nothing at all.

Of course, I have no idea if that is what might be going on with Juno, but it's just a thought. I'm wondering if other people have experience with noisy breathers too?
 
Juno may have some neuropathy in his hind legs: very common in diabetes. Have you tried cyanocobalamine? It's available as OTC tablets that most cats don't seem to mind crushed in their food, and there's also an injectable form that you'd have to get from your vet.
 
Sometimes I notice Furball sounds like she is breathing hard when she is laying on her side. She's never had any health issues because of it, so I've never worried about it.
 
Deanna: Thank you so much :-D. Yep, it sounds pretty much like that kind of sound. Not wheezy, just a little whistley. Like Billie it happens most of the times when he is lying down relaxing. He also snores sometimes, but he doesn't seem to have shortness of breath as well.

Carla: that's exactly when I notice that Juno is making such sound.

Camille: No I didn't try giving anything for his neuropathy. He has been pretty okay when moving around, but today he has been limping of one of his back legs. I'm a bit worried about that. He still jumps to the dining table, but then he has problems jumping down. Especially after when he has been lying down for a while and starts walking. He doesn't seem to be in pain, because he tried to bite me a few times, and that's always a sign he's feeling okay :lol:.
 
Congratulations! That is so awesome.

As for the muscle weekness, I hope that improves over time now that you are OTJ. Sammy is stronger and stronger as the months go by (she last had insulin mid March).

But I warn you, be careful what you wish for..... she is now jumping up on stuff and getting into things she hasn't looked at for years.
 
Any chance you can video/record the breathing sound on your phone or tablet if you have one? I was pretty sure Neko wouldn't perform for me at the vet so I showed the vet a video of her walking at home. Wendy/Tiggy video'd Tiggy's funny walking and uploaded it to Youtube for her vet to see. Tiggy hates the vet too.

I'd keep an eye on the limping. An amazing number of older cats get arthritis too. If it doesn't get better after time off the juice, you might want to again video to show the vet. You can add fish oil and glucosamine (Cosequin is one option) to their food to give some relief for that.
 
Wendy: I have been trying to record a video of that funny breathing, but as soon as I get my camera he stops doing it or he simply moves to a different place. It's so difficult. I had the same problem when I tried to record his asthma attacks a few months ago.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on the limping. It has not gone yet and my mind has started thinking of all possible worse case scenarios. I really hope that it's just a injure from a bad jump. I hope I can manage to record his walking and show it to the vet.
