Yesterday's post: 6/8 Dosage help, again.

Goodmorning all! Off to a bad start today unfortunately :( I gave Lola her breakfast and administered her 1 unit however she twitched as I was injecting her and a little of the insulin dripped out the syringe……sigh. I’m still learning here. I marked it down in her spreadsheet and will continue to monitor her levels throughout the day. I’ll post updates here later. Hope everyone’s day goes well!!!

Oh I’m sorry it was a rough morning for you guys. I’ve had many fur shots and like was told to me, it happens to all of us and Lola will recover and come back down. Every “mishap” is a chance to learn and she will be ok. Mister twitch’s sometimes too, usually it’s right after the injection when he does it. Cats have a lot of nerve endings on their back areas and as long as you’re shooting almost parallel into the tent of her skin then you’re doing it right. I’ve heard that Lantus stings a little bit too so it may be slightly uncomfortable for her for a few seconds.

My hands used to shake when I was done giving Mister’s injections, it’s scary when we don’t want to hurt them and there’s so much we don’t know. But you’re doing a great job, and I’m so happy to see you posting, this is where you will learn more things that you can put in your toolbox to help Lola. I hope she has a safe comfy day, give her love from me!

I was so frustrated with myself for messing it up but it still hasn’t even been a week since I’ve been giving injections so im trying my best to learn. Yeah she twitched after the injection and as I was pushing the insulin so that’s when I saw some drip out the needle. It didn’t look like a lot but I still noted it down on my spreadsheet! She still came down a bit after the 2 hour mark so that’s was good!

TY I hope you and Mister have a great day as well <3

A couple small housekeeping items that will help us when trying to help you. First of all, please put Lola's name in the subject line so we can find her quickly. We keep an eye out for new people. So the subject line should look like 06/09/26 Lola AMPS.....

Next, include a link to your last post in this forum: 6/8 Dosage help, again. That allows us to quickly go back and see any relevant history.

Looks like some downward movement today, so hopefully the lost insulin doesn't impact her too much. Another tip to help us is to indicate in the units that there was either a fur shot (FS) or partial fur shot. So for today in the units you'd put something like 1 PFS.

TY so much! Made the changes and will notate for future! Took her levels again and she came down a little more so I'm glad!

Looking at the notes on your spreadsheet, how often are you feeding her each day? Does she have food available during the cycle?

Twice a day! Usually around 12 hours apart! No food available throughout the day. I did buy her some treats but haven't experimented giving her any.

Feeding several small meals throughout the cycle is better on the pancreas. Human diabetics do the same. If you aren't at home, then you might want to invest in an automated pet feeder.

I was looking at the big drop on her spreadsheet last night. Big drops can cause bounces. Also big drops from preshot to +2 can indicate an active cycle that needs more monitoring, or at least additional food left out for kitty to heat to keep her safe. One tool to slow down drops is to feed a half hour before when she onsets, or the insulin starts to take effect. You might want to try experimenting with feeding her at +1 and +2 or +1 and +3. Just take some of the food from her main meal and feed it later.

If you suspect she'll keep going down at night after you are sleep, leaving out some food in autofeeder scheduled to open before nadir may help. Note, it's a little early yet to figure out when Lola has her nadir, or low spot during the cycle. You need more time and data on Lantus. Typical nadir is +6 but my Neko liked +7-+9 on Lantus, but sometimes earlier. I've also seen some nadir as early as +2-+3. Cats like to be different.

I will for sure be keeping this in mind. I feel like once I have more information on my spreadsheet I'll be able to judge if I need to split her meals into smaller ones. Perchance do you know the amount a 8 pound cat should be eating daily? I'm trying to transition her to only wet food and no more dry food.

My 8 lb cat did well on 160 calories per day. But there can be variation due to metabolism, age, activity level. If you know her ideal weight (vet can tell you), and have a baby or pet scale, you can feed what you need to reach the goal.

ETA: that 8 lb cat was not Neko, who was a lot larger.

Looks like Lola has had a spike from +5 222 to +8 324. She still has another 3 hours to go before her feed and PM insulin shot. I have noticed that the closer we get to her PM feed she starts to get very meowy and desperate. I also called her vet regarding her first curve test Friday and they advised me I cannot do the test myself at home. They told me that she has to come in for the curve test or else they wont continue to prescribe her insulin. I feel very frustrated and honestly might start looking for a new vet. I do not want to put Lola under any extra stress. I also tried explaining the 2 units they prescribed her was too much and them telling me I did not have to test her glucose at home is very worrying. The first day 06/06/26 she received 2 units of insulin at the vet in the morning. I did not get my glucose reader till that night and when I checked her level it was 127. I do not want to think what could have happened if I administered the 2 units that night without checking her levels beforehand. Any advice anyone?

Does anyone have a good vet recommendation for the Houston, Texas area? It can be a little outside of Houston as well if it has to. I really want Lola to get the care she deserves.

Your instincts are good. If I was in that situation I’d start calling around too. If anything the home testing data would be more accurate without the stress. Not that you need convincing… sorry you’re dealing with this :bighug:

I have already started to call around but the only way to test the vets is to make appointments at each one lol. I'm hoping someone in here is from the Houston area as well and can recommend someone to me.

Have you seen the member’s map? Under the members drop down. I don’t many names I recognize as active users in Houston, but maybe you’d have luck private messaging them.

It looks like the majority of those members aren't active :( I will still send out a couple messages, TY.

What a money grab! I hope you can find a good replacement vet before the current insulin runs out. How much do you have?

@LizzieInTexas :bighug::bighug: Thanks for stopping in.
I know :( I just got her vial on Saturday 06/06 so it’s brand new! It’s the only vial I have but her new appointment at the new vet is on 06/17 so I should have enough until then. I’m very hopeful that this vet will be more informed as they only see cats and no other pets! Very excited and hopeful :)

A non-diabetic cat needs roughly 20 to 25 calories per pound of body weight daily. Unregulated diabetics may need up to twice their normal calorie intake until they are better regulated.

Wrap bubble wrap around that vial so it doesn't break if you accidentally drop it. It happens. Next time, ask that the prescription be for the box of pens instead of the vial. A box will last you at least a year. The vial may last a few months or it may poop out in less than a month. You never know.

I kept the vial in the fridge but it never lasted more than a month before bgs got wonky 🤷‍♀️ That was with my previous diabetic. We later switched to the Levemir pens.

I hope they work out for you & Lola. I found the right vet on the 3rd one & they give me everything I ask for for Panzer & also respect that I consult with the FDMB about bloodwork & meds first & are fine me testing & changing his insulin dose according to his tests. I did almost lose them because I don't like him having vaccines but they require the rabies vaccine & won't see him unless it's up to date. I lost 2 kittys to cancer from vaccines. I take him to a Saturday clinic once a year for the purevax rabies vaccine which doesn't have carcinogens in it.
