Is Loki eating too fast that he's throwing up?

With him having a history of DKA, I would suggest asking some experienced people on here to take a look at your SS and see if your dosing is on par.

Replying here. He used to have a bad habit of the Scarf n Barf but it doesn’t always seem to be the culprit these days. I measure him for ketones at home and so far he’s been negative since Dx, so thank goodness for that.


Not a bad start today, buddy! The reason I’ve put the question mark is because 1) Judy brings up a good point and 2) I’ve sent the charts off to my vet and he said he was really concerned about the dips below 90 and recommended moving down to 1.5 units instead of 2. I’m torn because it doesn’t seem Loki has earned a reduction yet? I feel like we’re making progress, I am happy with the lack of reds.

Unfortunately most vets do not have a very comprehensive understanding of feline diabetes! When someone told me that in the beginning I was not exactly believing that...I thought, how could a medical professional trained in animal health/disease NOT know everything there is to know about this disease? Until I started reading all the stickies and many of the posts here on this forum - it became obvious very soon that these folks had far more experience with this disease than any vet I've ever seen.

I am not trying to disparage vets - I do believe they mean well and are sincere...but they do not have the time to devote to a single disease like this one and unfortunately many have given the wrong advice to so many cat owners - sometimes resulting in the untimely death of their pet...it's heartbreaking to read those stories.

Dipping below 90 is exactly where you want Loki to be...anything between 50 - 100 is what we all strive for...take a look at the others' condos and spreadsheets...look at @Sarah and Blaze for instance. All that green (under 100) is just what she's been working for. It's the road to remission...and we all strive for it...

So, disregard what your vet says...and proceed with the dose that appears to be working just fine. Keep testing (looks like you already do a great job of that)...and since you're on TR you'll be able to increase in a few days if you don't see anymore of that lovely green...and don't send your vet anymore spreadsheets...at least not that particular vet...

I was thinking this. The vet is great, he’s said some things I definitely agree with (and some things i think are iffy), and he has wonderful credentials (his specialty is endocrine disorders) but sooner or later Loki is going to have to hold greens for best remission chances. I don’t know if his concern was the lower readings for the sake of the low numbers or because of the bounces. The vet also said a few weeks ago he was suspecting Somogyi with Loki’s high AM readings.

Anyway, I’m inclined to keep his dose the same now that I’m seeing what I think is progress and will re-evaluate when things change. Thanks!

Yep...I got the same thing when I first consulted with my vet - very nice supportive guy! Very smart too! However, he continues to give me advice/information that just isn't on point all the time. I trust him with lots of things, but when it comes down to the precision of managing this disease, I'm leaving that up to the forum. I've learned a lot over the last two years and I believe that is the only way that Luci is here with us today - yes, still a diabetic but she's happy and healthy and seems to be loving life in general! Those things make me happy...so it's a good day all around! And I see the vet when I need to and listen to what he has to say about her diabetes...and I say thank you, and ok, um hummm...and smile and pay the bill and go on my way to do what I've been doing for over two years...

AM and PM readings are the highest of the day...the insulin has done all it can do...and Loki just needs another injection to help him thru the next 12 hours...
