Today is Butters's first day as a long-term diabetic. It is also day three on the antibiotic. Unfortunately, not a lot of change in the swelling but I thought her congestion sounded a little better.

Her vet called and told me he is trying to get her in sooner with the cardiologist so that she might be able to get a dental sooner than later.

Her BG numbers are still going up.:banghead: They should be going down if the AB was working, shouldn't they. I think her numbers are telling me to increase tomorrow. She would be used to getting the AB by now, so I think increasing her insulin would be okay at this point. but as always, I welcome any and all thoughts.

Surf safely, kitties:cat: Have a great night, all:bighug:

Hello Lyla. I have been looking for an update on Butters. That’s good news about possibly getting her in to the cardiologist soon and then the dental specialist. It is really nice of your vet to call and check on her. How was her eating today? I’m sure that you have a good handle on her numbers and what she needs. How much were you going to increase? I’m hoping the clindamycin is going to help. Maybe it’s just a bad tooth infection. Or if she has a bad sinus infection then that can press on the nerve at the root of the tooth and cause tooth pain. Go with your gut on the increase.

Poor Butters :( I'd probably increase as well (to 0.75?) she's been creeping up a bit and I think you have some wiggle room with those nadirs. Id have expected the AB to have started helping by now but I'm no expert. I hope she starts to feel better!

I take .25u increases but shaved decreases:). Her new dose tomorrow will be 0.875u.

Thanks for checking on Butters, Suzanne. Her vet has been amazing at communicating with me and has even told me I can call the clinic anytime and he will get back to me. It makes things a lot less stressful. The downside is he is only there Wednesday-Friday.
Her eating was a little better today, which should be a good sign, but her BG numbers in the mid-blues are a bad sign given she has been almost all green for a few months now.
THe vet didn't see anything like an infection inside her mouth, and he cannot figure out why the swelling would be in so many different spots, so it's his best guess that there is some kind of infection and given she is pawing at her mouth a lot, probably something happening under the gumline. So I just have to wait and see if the AB works or not.

I increased by full amounts too. Good luck with the new dose, thank goodness for calipers!

I really liked going to the dental specialist. Mine also had access to a board certified anesthesiologist and consulted with her cardiologist before hand. Neko at one point had a sudden growth on her jaw bone and had to go in for quick surgery. And I had to increase too cause her numbers went up in response to the inflammation.

I also had a good experience at the dental vet. I had a beautiful, sweet cat named Merry. Her face was quite swollen. I was so afraid that it might be some kind of oral cancer. It was an abscessed canine tooth. Instead of removing the whole canine tooth, the dental specialist vet did a gingivectomy and antibiotics and she kept her tooth and healed up just fine.
