((Lucy)) so sorry to hear Squalllie isn't feeling good. When was the last time he was at the vet and someone looked in his mouth? I'd be afraid of an abscess or something else going on. Sending loads of vines and prayers for your sweet boy and these are for you :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

He was just at the vet about 2 weeks ago, the vet put him on a 10-day course of Clavamox for his teeth. I'm wondering if maybe he needs another round of ABs, and if the vet will give him something for pain. We've never talked pain meds before. Poor Squallie paws at his mouth almost every time he eats now, sometimes it's bad enough that he will stop eating and walk away. :(

I hope the vet can come up with something for the stripey man.

I was thinking which is why there is a smell of burning.

Could Squallie have also chewed his own tongue in the effort to keep food away from hurty teeth and gums?

The poor love & I feel for you.
Hope the vet finds something to ease Squallie and then a way to sort his gob.

It's entirely possible. I know, at one point while he was clawing at his mouth, it looked like he got a claw hooked - ouch! I'm going to pass on to my vet that Ty had anesthesia at 19 1/2 with no ill effects. I think @Stacy & Asia 's Asia may have, too. I mean, if it comes down to risking anesthesia or just calling it quits, I'd rather risk it! For his age he's really pretty healthy, the vet always says he can't believe how old he is, so...
 
Thinking about and praying for you and Squallie tonight as we go to sleep, Lucy , that when he sees the vet the answer is simple and he will respond to treatment quickly with no ill side effects :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I would not have your vet do a dental, find a vet dentist that specializes in doing that. They are much better equipped to handle complicated cases and anesthesia needs for older cats with a complication like diabetes. If you can get it done, do it. If I knew then what I know now, would have had a dental for Asia at 19 in a heartbeat! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Lucy, hoping Squallie feels better soon. I’m all for having a good dental specialist in the loop for Squallie. Did that for Azalea and she was 18 at the time.

Thank you, Sina. :bighug::bighug::bighug: I'm really considering going ahead with it, for him. He's so healthy, aside from the diabetes and the dental issues! He does have a heart murmur but it isn't real bad (2 out of 6, I think is what his vet said) and I would get an echo done prior to the dental. I don't want to lose him to something I can prevent!
