Ever since the other day when she got her tooth pulled she has remained in the black every morning and "hi" at night. I can tell she feels 100% better now that the tooth is out. She may have even gained another pound (makes her 8 pounds), I Hope so !!!
Anyway, should I cut her med back to .75 again?
 
Hi Laura,

Do you know the carb% of the food you're feeding Mom-Mom?

Her numbers are still very high. If anything, you should increase her insulin, not reduce it. I'm sure others will weigh in, but I would increase to 1.25units tonight.

Is there any of the tooth left in her mouth? Is her gum inflamed at all?

I agree with Suzanne. Is there any of the tooth left....being able to pluck it out without anesthesia makes one wonder about the root of the tooth.
How does a vet know he's got it all without an xray?

Will she let you feel around in her mouth and press and not react at all?
 
Hi guys .. I'm glad you can tell she is feeling better with the tooth out, but these numbers are too high for her .. fingers crossed all of the tooth came out and she eventually works her way back down! Have a great day guys!

Hello everyone. Well the story is, her tooth was actually cracked in half. It was the tooth on the bottom in the mioddle. The vet only took out the front half of the broken tooth out, he said that the other half is nice and strong. He is going to do it, but not for a few weeks. He feels that it was enough stress on her that day. She has a little sore on the outside of her gum, I think she may have bitten it the day he pulled the tooth. Besides that, I think when the swelling goes down, so will her sugars. I think the reason they are so high is because she is eating so much. Considering she is only still at 7 pounds, I am not gonna stop her at the point from eating every time she is hungry. I will raise it if you all think I should though, but I am just saying I think thats why its high because she LOVES to eat. Let me know. Thank You all again. :smile:
 
her numbers will probably stay high until the tooth is pulled so she will continue to need more insulin....

it's not the food unless you are giving her some high carb food or dry.....

remember to check her ketones....
recipe for dka is infection, high numbers and not enough insulin.... you sure don't want to go there.... very expensive and life threatening.....


I wish your vet would just get you scheduled asap and get it over with....
It's all going to be stressful so dragging it out longer isn't helping her situation.....
 
Laura - is there any chance of you getting some mid-cycle tests in the next few cycles? Mom-mom got down to a 49 on May 9th with this dose so it would be good to see what nadirs she is getting before we suggest where to go with the dose. High flat numbers at preshots could also mean too much insulin.
 
New here, so forgive me for not knowing all of Mom-Mom's history. I am interested to know, your vet was able to pull that tooth without putting her under anesthesia?
The reason I ask is that I have a similar sized cat, with high BG numbers as well, and my vet says her little body could not withstand being put under.
 
Ruth -- I can't say that I think Mom-mom's vet's strategy was a good one. Usually, pre-dental labs are needed and at the minimum, post-dental x-rays are indicated if an extraction is needed. In the case of a broken tooth, there's a greater possibility of an infection and as others have noted, that pieces of the tooth are still there which can also be a source of infection. I think your vet is wise to consider anesthesia. However, many of the cats here have had dental procedures. I would ask the vet why he thinks Tiger would not do well with anesthesia.

Laura: The suggestions that people have made are good suggestions. Usually numbers will come down after a dental. It's possible that Mom-mom's numbers are going low and you're not able to get the mid-cycle tests to tell you what's going on. The high numbers could be a bounce if numbers are lower than usual at some point during the cycle. It's also possible that the broken tooth was infected. If that's the case, numbers will stay elevated until the infection is treated. The other possibility is that you are feeding Mom-mom a brand of food that's higher in carbs that what you think.
 
The food I am feeding Mom-mom is Fancy Feast canned chicken & Liver. It is on the "good" list. It is something that she used to eat a few weeks ago. I just switch up from time to time. Actually, she wont eat the same kind for a real long period of time. I have done a few mid-cycle tests and got high numbers (over 550). Normally in the morning, its usually a high number. Should I do the 1.25 tonight??? I shoot in 7 minutes ??? Ok. I just gave her the 1.25. I guess only time will tell :? . Goodnight All :smile: :smile: :smile: :smile: :smile:
 
we know cats can go from 400-40-400 in 12 hours. i wouldn't assume that just because you're seeing high numbers at preshot that she is constantly high in between.

i think a mid-cycle test is essential, laura. it's not safe to skip them.
 
Yes, get some more tests. Max goes low at night and I would never know if I hadn't been told by the wonderful Julie, Marge, and Wendy to get some night tests in. I hope the dose increase works.

For the person whose cat needs a dental, my vet uses only isoflurane gas and gets in and out as quickly as possible. That shouldn't have an effect on the BG I would think. Max hasn't had a dental since diabetes so I don't know but it is worth asking about.
