Zoe continues to do well - she has been without insulin for 16.5 months. She has had a few other health issues that we are dealing with. Zoe was diagnosed with Feline Asthma about 9 months ago, she is treated with inhaled Flovent - I never would have believed that my fractious little girl would actually allow us to puff her....well, she does, twice a day! Currently we are testing her for Hyper-Thyroid....we went to the vet in March for a check-up, blood was drawn and her T4 came back in the "gray zone" and her Free T4 was high normal - today we went back for a re-check and will have the results in a couple of days - then I have to make the decision on how to treat her. ::sigh:: She had 3 teeth extracted in November. Her BG last weekend was a 78 (I think!) - over all she is a happy, playful & purry girl .....the P's are all present and accounted for! We just celebrated the 7th anniversary of her adoption on 4/24! cat_pet_icon

Here is a little background on Zoe.....
Zoe is a very special kitty....she was given to me, by my brother, a year after my other kitty had died. He said, he was tired of me missing a cat (actually I think he was tired of me coming to his house and playing with his cats!). So one Saturday, he went to a shelter, found Zoe (she wouldn't leave him alone, she kept following him and hitting his leg), adopted her and brought her to me. I have had cats all of my life, but none have ever been MY cat....where I am their number one person....until Zoe. She had been in the shelter for over a year and was terribly afraid of being out in the house.....we (I am disabled and live with my mom & dad) were patient and worked with her. She came out of her shell, SLOWLY....but she bonded with me, it is like she knew, she was meant for me. I spend a lot of time at home alone and she is an amazing companion. About a month after she came to live with us, I had to have surgery....when I came home....mom had put her in the laundry room, so we didn't have to worry about her running out the door when they brought me home from the hospital....when they let her out of the laundry room, she came running out, started for her favorite window to look out, saw me sitting in a chair....skidded to a stop, ran to me, leaped to the arm of the chair and sat there, rubbing her head on mine and licking my face. She is truly mine. Zoe will sit on my lap and sleep with me.....no one else. So as you can see, she is not only beautiful, but really special, too!

Happy Mother's day - to all!

Wow! what a wonderful story. And yes she is yours and you are hers! Just as it should be.

If you ever need an asthma cheerleader or anything, I'm dealing with that too with Sydney. I've seen some of your posts on the yahoo group. It is manageable, when they cooperate - When Syd's had enough she put her paw on the mask and tries to push it away.

I never knew how Zoe came to be with you. How great that she pestered your brother, she knew. ;-)

I'm glad she's doing so well. I haven't had to deal with Hyper-T, but it seems fairly manageable, especially for someone like you who is already used to treating your cat. Good luck!

HI Sherry and Zoe what a great story! I love to hear oldtimer updates! Zoe was really meant for you, I think animals know who there mamabeans will be!!! Have a great Caturday, thanks for making me smile with your story!

What a nice story. Thanks for sharing. Very heart touching.
I'm glad she found you to be hers.

Hi Sherry,

Congrats on 16.5 mos OTJ!

Just wanted to share my experience: My Kasha was diagnosed hyper-thyroid in January of '07. I had just lost a new kitten to feline leukemia and then that. I was devastated. Kasha's numbers were off the charts - she was burning up, her thyroid levels were so high (I don't remember which one it was, but the T4 or whatever is supposed to be less than 4 was 19!). For a month I tried to pill her, but she is very, very difficult. Pill pockets, etc. didn't work. After a month or so, on meds, her kidneys still looked good so I decided to do the radioactive thyroid treatment. It was expensive, but she was so impossible to pill... there went the emergency fund... I have to say - she did great. It was the only time she ever spent 3 days away from home without me, but that and the cost were the only bad parts. Her thryroid levels have been great ever since...

I do have another friend currently dealing with a hyper-thyroid kitty and she is doing the meds. Her kitty is also thriving and her levels are under control.

So - I know a lot is going on, but the thyroid thing can is definitely not the worst thing! It's very, very manageable... After all, look what you've already accomplished!

Good luck and best wishes!!!!

What a wonderful story. Somehow cats know, they just know, when the right person comes along.

Little Gray was hyper-t. He had the radio iodine treatment and became hyPOthyroid, and that led to diabetes. Still, I have no regrets. The hypothyroidism and diabetes were easier to deal with than hyper-t and less damaging to him. If Zoe's difficult to medicate and you don't want to do radio iodine, her thyroid medicine can be compounded into a gel that you'd rub inside an ear tip.

I need to add here, don't let Little Gray's hypothyroidism and diabetes discourage you from doing radio iodine. That happens very rarely. Little Gray was the exception to almost every rule, including the one that radio iodine works perfectly as a cure and doesn't have side effects.

Zoe chose you through your brother, how sweet. She knew what you couldn't have known and she knows you're trying to help her stay healthy. What a beautiful story.

What a wonderful post!!
She and you really have a special bond. What a beautiful story of how she came to live with you. Strange, isn't it~~that she followed your brother around and that he was so truly thoughtful about getting a kitty for you. It's as if it was destined to be! And the way she reacted when she saw that you were home...
AWWwww...it is so great hearing about you two! Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
Congratulations on your OTJ for so long too!!! Yay Zoe!
Good luck with the upcoming results....hoping for the best for Zoe... :YMHUG:

Thank you for sharing Zoe's story. she is a very special kitty indeed.

as for the HT. Winnie had I-131 and it was the best thing we could of done. cured it. no problems. ( well I missed her terribly when she had to be away from me for it )
Here is the link to the place we had it done -- they offer some info on the treatment and HT.

sorry that these other issues have cropped up. I'm sure whatever you decide will be *best* for Zoe.
