Hello everyone! I have disappeared for a couple of months as many things were happening in my life ,but I really feel the need to come back if you will accept me again...
My Socrates is stuggling with IBD and possible small cell lymphoma,started prednisolone yesterday for a secon time.Even though last timehe tolerated well ,now his BG is very high. The doctor had him 0n 0.5 units of lantus but now said to increase to 1 iu again.I am very worried and feeling guilty I left the group even though I never stopped taking care of him.
In the morning I gave 0.75 iu ,should I give him more or wait until pmps?
 
Please remove the 911. It’s reserved for when a cat is in hypo range. Change it to a ? Prefix. Thanks.
 
Sorry to hear about the IBD/lymphoma. Have you considered seeing a oncologist? If scl you need to add a chemo pill. It does look like you need to increase to 1.0. How often are you giving prednisolone?

I am sorry about the 911,I have forgotten the rules...
He had an endoscopy and the results are not clear.We are waiting for an other test which will show if he has cancer and if so he will start chlorambucil as well.
For the monment he is on prednisolone 5 mg twice a day for 10 days.

Hi Ilianna, saw your 911. I am not qualified to give you advice but I wanted to reach out and say welcome back. So sorry Socrates is not doing well. The one thing I do know a little about is steroids, this is what brought on my Dolly’s diabetes. I hope with your vet and the wonderful people on this forum you can get Socrates feeling better.

That’s good he was tested. I hope you get conclusive results. The work around for prednisolone is to increase the insulin as needed. We can do that. :bighug:

Thanks for the support! My biggest fear at the moment is DKA ,so I try to feed him every couple of hours.I will give 1 unit tonight and no pill and I will start the treatment tommorow again

Does he have a history of ketones or DKA?

He is probably just bouncing from lower numbers he may have seen (going by the 153 we saw on 4/28). Hang in there. Shoot at the normal time. Make sure he eats and drinks enough.
 
Do you test for ketones?

How is your work schedule these days? I remember that work timings made it difficult for you to test him regularly. Any chance you can get some one more test per cycle? Want to get some idea of how low he is going on each dose.

No I haven't tested for a while buy I will get some more strips ASAP! I will do a curve on Tuesday on my day off

Best way to ease your mind would be to test for ketones regularly. :-)

It would be better to get a test here and there every day if you can. Whenever you can. Can be different times on different days.
If the day you pick to do a curve turns out to be a bounce day - like today - you will only get high flat numbers.

I had the same situation with my latest SCL kitty. It's probably the PARR test you are waiting for. As Elise said, you can give the prednisolone just once a day if it's easier for you. And we'll work the insulin dose around it.

If you want to shoot an hour early tonight, that is probably OK as he's so high. But that would be a one time thing, though if you want to change your schedule you can use that time as your new preshot time. Is there any way you can get a test before bed at night? You are missing half the data and many cats go lower at night. We determine how to change dose based on the lows so it's good to get an idea what he's doing at night.

I gave the shot an hour earlier but it can be my new preshot time.Ialso tested before bed (it is 23.00 in Greece now) and his reading was 409 with 1 unit of insulin .This is his +3,so i hope it will not rise again.
